This area has many interesting archaeological and natural sights to see, including some of great historical importance. For example, you can see the remains of the ancient city of Minoa and its harbor, a powerful city-state during Greek times.

Moreover, the island's many beautiful Byzantine and Venetian monasteries are fascinating places to visit, such as the 11th Century Katholiko Monastery, containing the church of St John the Hermit, which is carved into the mountainside.
