Vacation Rental Alla Giudecca - Siracusa

This hotel has no staff after noon. We arrived to a closed up place. We had called and left messages days before and never had any answer. Someone arrived and opened the door to show us our room and left immediately. All of the other public areas were locked. It was a creepy experience.

The location (on top of ancient Jewish Mikwah) and a few steps from the sea and the city centre is fantastic. Hotel personnel gave us a tour of the Mikwah. Beautiful reading and music rooms, internet free at any time.We'll definitely go back there!

Les chambres sont en fait des appartements avec un coin cuisine. Très agréable en famille avec possibilité de diner le soir dans la chambre. Superbe décoration dans les parties communes mais petit déjeuner sans intérêt dans une salle un peu petite. En plein centre dans une rue sans voiture. Pas de parking mais on arrive à se garer a proximité. Baignade juste en face mais pas de sable, des rochers.

The Alla Giudecca is located in a formerly depopulated area on the east side of the ancient island of Ortygia which is slowly coming back to life. The hotel itself has recently been renovated and is an interesting property. The public rooms are ancient, architecturally interesting and have been gorgeously resurrected with impeccable Italian taste. The gray stone and modern white-covered furniture are set off by brilliant colored tapestries and interesting collections of local majolica. Dramatic wrought iron fixtures bridge the distance between antique and contemporary. The breakfast rooms are charmingly intimate. That said, the private rooms leave something to be desired. The concept is good: simple materials, simple objects against the old white-washed stucco walls. However, stinginess has resulted in poor lighting, tiny shower stall lacking even a ledge for soap or shampoo, small flat pillows, and not enough color to make the place welcoming. Our particular rooms were actually a tiny apartment: living room with wrought iron daybed, pine table and two straw-bottom chairs; a nicely outfitted kitchen-in-a-closet; tiny bedroom just bigger than the bed; balcony with two plastic chairs. However, I would still recommend this place. The neighborhood hasn't quite come around yet, but it's within five to ten minutes' walk of the main piazza and is in some ways more interesting than the more heavily touristed side of the island. In the vicinity of Alla Giudecca, you can feel the astounding antiquity of the city of Siracusa, and in fact, the sitting room of the hotel has a glass floor revealing a millennia-old well beneath the medieval foundations. We stayed here for five nights quite comfortably, so I do recommend the place. If the management would invest a little more money, especially into the lighting and bathrooms, it would be a fantastic, unique hotel.
