We stayed at Guest House Barbara for a week in March 2008. We spent a week in Germany, followed by one night in Pisa and then a week in Cinque Terre at Guest House Barbara. Our room consisted of a bed room and a bathroom. The room was slightly larger than the two twin beds and mattresses that were pushed together to emulate a full sized bed. Being our first stay in Italy, though small and provincial, we immensely enjoyed our stay at Guest House Barbara. The room also contained two end tables and lamps next to the bed, an armoire, a small refirgerator and a table holding a 12 inch television. The television had three English channels; CNN International, an international sports channel and an international weather channel; all of which got exceedingly poor reception. Being small and quaint, the room had all of the Old World Italian charm for which we were hoping. The two windows of our third story room were over an exceedingly narrow 'street', sidewalk really. The walk was maybe 2.5 meters (10 ft) wide, making it easy for us to toss an empty bottle of table wine or limoncello through a window across the street had the occupants left the window open. The bathroom was adequate. The only real problem with it was that the wall mounted hot water heater delivered not more than 40 liters (10 gal) of hot water before it turned cold. So be prepared for a very quick shower. Walking up to the room from the water front required climbing 170 steps. Having been in the middle of training for a marathon, that was an easy task for me, but was somewhat challenging for my couch potato wife. The room was less than a ten minute walk to any other point in Riomaggiore; including the train station and the Via del Amore. The whole of Italy is made from stone and then covered with plaster and/or grout. This means that any noise generated from within the building would travel unimpeded to our room. This was my 3rd visit to Riomaggiore and it was a disaster. In the past I have paid 50-70 euros for a room with no view. This year we decided to splurge and spend 120 euros to have a room with a view and a terrace. The view was of the fishing docks leading to the blue water. See attached photos. Tuesday June 10th We arrived around 7pm in Riomaggiore. Our luggage was lost by the airlines but we were very excited to be there and looking and forward to our room and a romantic getaway. When we were taken to the room we found it to be small, plain, undecorated and sterile. We were outraged. The room and surrounding property was not as described by the website. The property shown on the website had a view of the water and shared terrace. (www.venere.com) There was only one window that opened to a wall. The air conditioning and fan was broken. Five minutes after entering our room we went back to the check-in and explained that the room we rented on venere.com was not the room that we where checked into. An unidentified young Italian woman took the key back, along with vulgar language and told us to leave. (Barbara the owner is on the phone with this lady) We explained the room was unacceptable due to it not being the one we reserved, we were checking out and canceling the following night. We were devastated by the ruined romantic weekend in Italy and the mistreatment we received. Wednesday June 11th We returned in the morning to speak with the owner (Barbara). Another lady greeted us while we waited. We showed her the pictures from the internet of the place we thought we were staying. (A direct link from our reservation.) She explained that multiple properties are rented out of the same office and these are pictures of her property not Barbara’s. When Barbara arrived we explained everything, informed her once again that we did not stay there and then we left. We did not expect to be charged for the room because we properly checked out. Inst

There was nothing wrong with Guest House Barbara. The price was perhaps too high. There was no view at all, just one window looking out at the building next door. The photographs were not of Guest House Barbara but just a generic photo of Riomaggiore. There was no map or single location specified apparently because there are several locations around the village. If I were doing it over again, I would have looked for a place with a better view.
