Convenient budget hotel - appears to be mostly young travellers, but fine for a family too. Communal kitchen/living, not really suitable for cooking a family meal, but why would you bother when there are trattorie and hosterie round the corner.

The area around the hotel is a little sketchy since it is right near the train station, so that was a little disquieting for two young girls traveling. The property itself is very nice, and the staff were great. The room was spacious and had a nice view, the bathrooms were clean. They had a nice kitchen facility and a washer in the main lobby, I do wish they had a dryer as well. There's also a computer with Wifi in the main lobby or Wifi access if you have a laptop. The next day they also let us leave our luggage for the day so we could go explore the city before catching the train, which was so great.

Very familiar hotel, feeling you at home. In the kitchen is really everything! Free Internet is also very practical. Room cleaned and bed made up every day. Very close to Central Station (4 minutes walk).

The location is great - close to Firenze SMN train station and to major tourist attractions. The host, Francesco, is a terrific, helpful guy. You need to manage your expectations for this "hotel." This is really a hostel with private rooms and not a hotel per se. If you don't mind climbing 3 floors of stairs to get in/out of the hostel, you'll find this a good value-for-money accommodation in Florence.

Federico was a most gracious and accomodating host. For the price, it can't be beat. Our room was large by most European standards. Clean and comfortable beds with very nice sheets. The internet access was right outside my room! The kitchen area was adequate and convenient as well. We were traveling for pleasure and found it in a very convenient location to most sites and a very easy walk from the train station S.M.Novella. Federico marked on a map for us the outdoor markets which were only a couple blocks away as well. I would not recommend this property for anyone who has health issues as it is on the 4th floor (great view by the way) with no lift. That fact is stated in the description and would not be an issue for most. I felt very secure as the outside entrance is always locked, as is the door to the 4th floor where the rooms are. Plus you have the lock on your room door. We never took advantage of the 3 euro. breakfast nearby, and really didn't seem to be an issue. With the refrigerator, it's just as easy to grab something at the market and leave it for breakfast in the morning. There is a coffee pot, fridge, sink, stove, dishes and utensils. We had a private bathroom and was clean and adequate. For a place to rest my head at night, this place was perfect. If you're looking for luxury, pay the money and stay somewhere else. I thought Il Ghiro was exactly as described and enjoyed my stay. Federico is a most gracious and helpful host-even managed to reserve our tickets for us at the Accedemia on short notice. Perfect! Grazie! We would definiately come back and would recommend to anyone traveling to Florence. The photo I've attached is the view from my room the last night there.

Maybe I didn't read the description clearly enough but there were six flights of stairs to climb. Tough with luggage. When we arrived there was only a note on the door saying that no one could let us in. We had just hauled luggage a long way and were rather grumpy. Had to haul it back to leave it at the train station. Woudl have been nice if owners had made some accomodation. No soap in rooms, had to buy. Otherwise convenient and nice.

We loved our stay at Il Ghiro. The view from our room was beautiful, the staff were friendly and helpful, and it was wonderful to have free access to the internet, a washing machine, and a small kitchen. The bathroom was shared, but there was rarely a line for it, and it was spacious (for Italy) and very clean. The downsides were very minor: you have to climb many flights of stairs to get to Il Ghiro, and our room was tiny. With a view like that, though, we didn't mind at all.

We really enjoyed our stay at Il Ghiro. The staff was very friendly, the room was surprisingly large and we were in easy walking distance to everything. The train station was very close by which was a very nice plus! We would stay there again should we return to Florence!

Il Ghiro è al terzo piano di un palazzo senza ascensore. La disponibilità e la cortesia degli addetti è ottima (ci hanno aiutato anche a portare su e giù le valigie) ma l'ambiente avrebbe bisogno di una buona rinfrescata e di una pulizia più accurata. Non c'è prima colazione ma solo l'accesso libero alla cucina abbastanza attrezzata. Ottima la posizione, da dove si gira la parte turistica di Firenze a piedi; anche la stazione è a due passi. Libero accesso ad Internet nel piccolo spazio comune ma non c'è televisione in camera, confort si camera (asciugamani, sapone, ecc.) minimi.

abbiamo soggiornato 3 giorni presso "Il ghiro" e ci siamo trovati benissimo. la stanza era molto spaziosa, il bagno funzionale e c'era la possibilità di usare internet in qualsiasi momento. c'era anche una cucina in cui si poteva cucinare liberamente senza restrizioni d'orario. l'accoglienza è stata ottima e ci sono state fornite tutte le informazioni necessarie sulla città;la posizione, infine, è davvero ottima, a pochi minuti a piedi dal centro.

This was a nice stay. Federico (the host) and Masi (employee) was quite welcomming and a couple of nice guys. We have already told everyboody we know how great the stay was and sincerely recommend it to them. Go there!

Pretty spartan surroundings, but the hosts were friendly and helpful. It is a room with a bath. No frills, but the location is great being so close to the train station and you can always find your way back there if you get lost in Florence! There is no elevator, so the climb up is pretty daunting if you go back and forth a lot, but the price and location outweigh the stairs. The hosts also provide in the common area and computer on DSL so it was easy to keep up with the US. I would recommend the place, with the stair stipulation.

This was a great place to stay! Clean and comfortable, good value for the money and great location! The owner and the manager were really great; helpful, friendly and spoke english well. We used the kitchen facilities to prepare the great fresh food we purchased around the corner at the central market, and there is also an amazing Trattoria right down stairs (Enzo and Piero). All of the recommendations the staff made were great, ask them where to find the best pizza and gelatto in town.The washing machine was slow and loud but got the job done. The free use of the communal computer with unlimited internet and email is a huge extra perk! Thanks Il Ghiro.

Das Personal war sehr nett und hilfsbereit, das Zimmer einfach, aber ordentlich und sehr sauber. Sehr zentrale Lage und trotzdem ruhig, weil es im 4. Stock ist. Alles in allem wirklich empfehlenswert.

Good stuff- very convenient location to train station, wonderful host Frederico was very helpful, coffee in the a.m. Restaurants and cafes very close by. Less than 15 minute walk to all major sites- Duomo, Uffizi, Accademia, Pitti Palace, and Ponte Vecchio. Mercato Centrale less than 2 blocks away. Only concern was 4th floor location without elevator which was no big deal for our party, but may be harder on older folks. Also noticed a variety of clients- young college students/travelers to older couples. If you are young, great place to stay, older folks may find it only a good place to stay.

The best place we stayed during our entire Italy vacation! Frederico is so helpful. We have a 2 year old, who loved Frederico and felt right at home. Maid service everyday and internet connection are some of the plusses. Also, it's nice to have kitchen and fridge access, as well as somewhere to hang dry clothes. Very good value -- one of these days, they might wise up and start charging what they're worth. I'd definitely stay here again, especially with kids. By the way, the family-owned trattoria just down stairs has some of the best tiramisu and bisteca. Very good!
