About Val di Fiemme

Known as the “door of Dolomites”, Val di Fiemme is one of the main ski areas in east Trentino. It comprises 5 ski resorts: Ski Center Latemar (Obereggen-Pampeago-Predazzo), Bellamonte-Lusia Alp, Lavazè Pass-Oclini Pass, and Rolle Pass.

Useful Ski Info: The resorts in this area offer many options besides downhill skiing, such as cross-country skiing, tobogganing, nordic skiing and snowshoeing. Downhill and cross-country skiing mix perfectly along the Passo Lavazé-Oclini, with a stunning panorama of the Dolomites. For some nice après-ski time, head to the towns of Castello Molina di Fiemme, Cavalese, and Tesero.

Are you a fairly confident skier? Then do not miss the red Pista Agnello which spans over 2.5 km (1 mi) long. The black Pista Olimpia is well worth a try to - its steep path cuts right through a forest and has a unbeatable panorama.

Skipass Info: The Val di Fiemme-Obereggen ski pass covers all the 5 ski resorts of the area.

Are Stradivari violins really made in Val di Fiemme?

Answer

Are Stradivari violins really made in Val di Fiemme?

Although many legendary violins were made from the resonance firs of Val di Fiemme, famous lute-makers like Stradivari actually constructed the instruments in the northern Italian town of Cremona, importing the wood from the valley now known as the Sounding Forest. According to legend, Stradivari himself would travel to Val de Fiemme in search of the most suitable trees for his instruments.

The wood from these centuries-old spruces offers the ideal raw material for violins, as the timber is elastic, promoting better sound transmission. The trees are called resonance firs because their lymphatic system acts much like the pipes of an organ, allowing for sublime resonating tones.
