The region’s landscapes include cliffs, beaches and islands. Some of the beaches have sandy shores, and others are at the bottom of steep cliffs. The islands are surrounded by a crystal sea that every visitor is sure to enjoy. Along with historic castles and abbeys in the Tuscan countryside, the area is known for its fine food and relaxing experience.

Tuscany's Top 8 Cities

It's not easy at all to choose Tuscany’s most stunning destinations. But after a long inner struggle, I have decided to go with these 8 places:

  • Florence: Honestly, if you haven’t visited the capital of Renaissance art and architecture, you haven’t seen Tuscany at all
  • Siena: Worth a visit not only for the famous Palio horse race, but also for its black-and-white stone Duomo, family-run restaurants, and delicious biscuits
  • Chianti: Not a city, but an entire region riddled with beautiful countryside B&B’s and farm house accommodations, not to mention its historic vineyards where you can taste a good vintage or two
  • Lucca: Nothing is more stereotypically Italian than sipping an espresso coffee or glass of wine in the uniquely shaped Piazza Piazza dell'Anfiteatro
  • Pisa: You should have at least one photo with Leaning Tower
  • San Gimignano: With 72 medieval towers still standing, this is the place to be for lovers of picture-postcard Medieval towns
  • Pietrasanta: Famous for its many skilled marble sculptors, many of whose masterpieces are on public display. The nearby beaches are good too!
  • Arezzo: Another Tuscan ‘mecca’ for Renaissance art and architecture enthusiasts

    Traveler Stories

    Why I love Tuscany

Looking down from an ancient castle, I felt the countryside must be exactly the same as it was ages ago.

Visiting historical sites is just one of the incredible experiences I enjoy every time I visit Tuscany. I have spent the night in a 300-year-old castle, viewed works of the art from the Renaissance and feasted on tasty Tuscan cuisine. When I want to exercise, I swim in the summer or ski in the winter.

Every part of Tuscany has something to offer. If my loved ones and I need privacy, we can take a hike through the countryside. If I want to shop, the designer boutiques in Florence have everything I need. A visit to any of the local restaurants in Pisa always satisfies my craving for authentic pasta.

What is the best way to experience everything Tuscany has to offer?

    Answer

What is the best way to experience everything Tuscany has to offer?

It will take a long time to experience all the history, architecture and cuisine of Tuscany, but you can get a taste of everything by managing your time wisely. You can see Renaissance art at the museums in Florence, explore the countryside by hiking in the mountains or take a bike ride through the hills. If you like the beach, visit the beautiful Gulf of Baratti. Stay in a villa near Siena and in a farmhouse in San Gimignano. You can explore a medieval village in the Chianti region.

There are also many cultural things to do wherever you happen to be staying. If you want to take classes during your vacation, you can learn how to speak Italian or cook Tuscan dishes. Annual events in Tuscany include medieval fairs and summer festivals.

3 things you must eat and drink while visiting Tuscany

When you hear Tuscany, you instantly think art, nature, beaches … and then food! There are many unique local foods you won’t want to miss when holidaying in Tuscany, not to mention the wine!

  • Bistecca alla Fiorentina: The classic Florentine T-bone steak that’s delicious with fresh cannellini beans
  • Bomboloni: For the sugar addicts among you, try these fried doughnuts covered with icing sugar and filled with jam, chocolate or vanilla cream. A must for any Tuscan breakfast
  • The wine of course! Chianti, Vin Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Monalcino and Morellino di Scansano are just few of its most famous wines. Plan a trip around Tuscany and its wine areas and vineyards to taste them one by one.
  • Meet the team

Born and brought up in Rome, Claudia is also Roman to the core. While she loves travelling to discover new places, she always looks forward to her return back home, its warmth and cultural delights.

    Things worth remembering in Tuscany

Fun Fact: Tuscany is sometimes referred to as "the essence of Italy," due to its significant influence on the culture of the entire country. The Tuscan dialect is what evolved into the modern Italian language.

Local Dish: Herbs and olive oil are used to flavor many Tuscan dishes. Fresh pasta ribbons known as pappardelle are served with wild boar or wild hare.

Day Trips: Florence has art museums, historic sites and designer boutiques. Renaissance art is displayed at the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi Gallery.

Are there a variety of places to shop in Tuscany?

    Answer

Are there a variety of places to shop in Tuscany?

Shops in Florence and other Tuscan cities offer a variety of merchandise. If you are interested in designer goods, you can take a bus from Florence to an outlet mall near the city. Designer outlets sell some of the best leather goods in the country. There are also many shoe stores in Florence, including a designer shoe store located in a castle. Handmade chocolate, wooden toys, leather goods and jewelry are available at specialty shops in the city.

If you want to buy some handmade goods to take home, visit one of Tuscany’s villages. You’ll find beautiful items intricately crafted by local artists. You can buy local olive oil and wine in many of the smaller towns in Tuscany and even see how it’s made.
