Traveler Stories

Why I love Sicily – South Coast

My wife and I experienced fun, adventure and excitement in our travels along the southern coast of Sicily.

Both of us took history in college, so we decided to visit various temples from the ancient world. We chose to go to Valle dei Templi first. This amazing location has a number of Greek temples that date back nearly 2,500 years ago. We found ourselves spending several hours exploring this area, which is close to Agrigento.

When we completed our visit to Valle dei Templi, I took my wife to Sciacca. This area was originally known for having mud baths from ancient times, and so we visited a fantastic spa for this famous experience. My wife loved the experience and the soothing treatments on her skin.

Answer

What is a great restaurant that offers seafood on Sicily’s southern coast?

A terrific restaurant that has memorable seafood is Ristorante La Piscina. This facility is located in the beautiful town of Pozzallo. Diners can choose from a wide variety of seafood choices; there is plenty of fresh fish that have been caught by locals. In addition, there are lobsters, mussels and many other types of seafood to enjoy. Popular dishes include Linguine all’Astice, Spigola al cartoccio and Ostriche al limone.

The restaurant officially opened in 1993. It is a family-owned business, so it’s easy and fun to talk with the cooks and servers to learn more about things to do in the area. Another benefit of visiting Ristorante La Piscina is the atmosphere; flowers and pieces of décor featured in the establishment help create an authentic Sicilian experience.

What attractions can I find off the typical tourist path?

Answer

What attractions can I find off the typical tourist path?

The southern coast of Sicily features plenty of places that can be considered jewels in the rough. Beaches located far away from hotels can give peace and tranquility to visitors looking to avoid crowds. The countryside itself features rough rocks, rolling hills and a unique sense of beauty.

People who would like to visit a historic site that often gets overlooked should see Eraclea Minoa, an ancient Greek city that was built over 2,000 years ago. It is located close to the Halycus River. The beach next to the site is quite inviting and has been a draw for people around the area. Also, be sure to visit the local amphitheater and step back in time.
