You haven’t witnessed nature in its most raw form until you have experienced the breathtaking allure of Gargano National Park.
This stunning Peschici retreat takes you into a natural world that features majestic rocky coasts offset by valleys flourishing with plants and rare species of wildlife. A landscape in contrast, you can vacillate between the lush forest floor of this awe-inspiring destination and the cave-ridden cliffs that jut conspiratorially towards the sea, daring even the bravest to challenge them. Even the best garden at home won’t prepare you for the flowers that fill the prairies in this awe-inspiring Italian landmark. Spanning 120,000 hectares, Gargano National Park should be more than just a side trip on your visit to Peschici, it should be a focus. The photos alone will surely take up residence on your living room wall when you reluctantly return home. In fact, several rooms in my home feature framed prints that I shot of the great-spotted woodpecker while visiting this most extraordinary of national parks.
With a long stretch of sandy, white beach, the great thing about Cala Lunga is it has shallow waters that jut pretty far out. This makes it ideal for kids and for lounging, floating and frolicking. You can get there easily from the main road, and parking is plentiful.
Highlight: Three outdoor shower spigots allow easy access for cleaning off those sandy feet.Address: Località Calalunga, 71010 Peschici, Foggia
If you can, plan your visit for summer time. Every July on the 19th, 20th and 21st, the town celebrates its patron saint, St. Elia. A grand procession marks the high point of the celebration of this revered saint, who, as legend has it, helped prevent an invasion of locusts from descending on the town. Spring is another fun time to visit. On the first Monday after Easter, locals join in a procession in honor of Our Lady of Loreto, which ends at her shrine. On the last Sunday in May, join in the Feast of the Madonna del Mare, a festival celebrating the Virgin Mary with a procession of boats along the coast.
Fun Fact: Gargano has the highest concentration of orchids in all of Europe and in the Mediterranean basin, featuring 56 species and five sub-species.
Local dish: Locals can’t get enough of handmade orecchiette with tomato and cheese sauce. Indulge in cucina Mediterranea – typical foods of this region feature the rich, unmistakable flavors of olive oil, caciocavallo and pecorino cheese.
Local Day Trips: Hop on a Costant Nicola Agenzia Tour Delle Grotte of Peschici’s cavernous cave system.

The famed Saracen Towers, originally built centuries ago to fend off pirates and Turkish attackers, illustrate Peschici’s defense system of years past. You’ll get an amazing view of the bays if you can stomach the hike up to the tops of the towers. Don’t forget your camera! Although portions of each tower have fallen to disrepair, most are in good condition, affording a panoramic view of the bays, fishing vessels, cliffs and miles of ocean vistas. These towers were built in succession as one unified system of watchtowers, so guards in each one could signal to the other without interruption.
