Traveler Stories

Why I love Maiori

The rich history of Maiori, along the spectacular Amalfi Coast, makes it one of my favourite Italian coastal resorts.

To experience the town’s glorious past, I visited the Santa Maria a Mare, an ancient 13th century church with remarkable Renaissance architecture. Inside the church is a magnificent pipe organ. I enjoyed viewing an impressive display of valuable sculptures and artifacts from the church’s past in the Museo d’Arte Sacra, adjacent to the church.

Maiori, with the longest unbroken stretch of beach along the Amalfi Coast, gratifies my love for beaches. My favourite was the Marina di Erchie Beach, with striking ocean waters that alternate between shades of turquoise and green. Numerous coves and caverns along the beach enhance the beauty of the coastal terrain. For fun and adventure, I explored a series of caves on different levels linked by tunnels.

Not to be missed is the Capo d’Orso headland, a protected nature reserve with a scenic landscape. I enjoyed the diversity of animals and Mediterranean vegetation here, with tree species such as oak and chestnut. Taking a nature walk through vineyards and forests, I was delighted to spot some foxes, hedgehogs and weasels.

What is the best way to get around in Maiori?

Answer

What is the best way to get around in Maiori?

The scenic drive around the Amalfi Coast is a narrow single lane in each direction without much parking space for a car. During the peak season of tourism in the summer, it is easier to get around and enjoy the view on a rental motorbike or moped. Public transportation can be taken via Sita bus, but be sure to plan ahead as tickets must be purchased prior to boarding.

Walking is the best way to take in all of the sights once settled in Maiori. Shops, bars, the market and restaurants are all within a comfortable walking distance requiring nothing more than a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

Insider Tip: If taking public transportation, try to find a schedule online and carry it with you so that you never miss a stop.

There are a lot of different activities available for younger people visiting the area. Resort hotels often cater amenities and on-site activities to traveling families with small children. Book a stay with an establishment offering a pool, beach access or other recreational areas that kids can play in freely.

Active kids can enjoy running along the gorgeous, expansive Erchie beach. Tourists tend to flock to the establishments offering rentals, but rest assured there are areas at the ends of the beach that are free to the public. Go early to stake out your spot and enjoy lunch with the whole family.
