What should I plan to do in the Giardini Naxos area?

Answer

What should I plan to do in the Giardini Naxos area?

Giardini Naxos is a modern community with a very relaxed atmosphere, and the main attraction is the ocean. Lungomare, the most popular beach area, offers a variety of shops that rent beach chairs and other gear. Nearby, restaurants and hotels sell snacks and drinks. The water is warm and shallow with small waves, which is great for childern.

Visiting the Museo Archeologico di Naxos is another nice way to spend an afternoon. This museum shows the history of Giardini Naxos and the archeological excavation that has taken place nearby. If you don’t speak Italian and want the experience to be educational, take a dictionary because the placards are in Italian. After touring the museum, you can walk around the excavation sites.

Traveler Stories

Why I love Giardini Naxos

The superb beaches, panoramic ocean views and surrounding hilly terrain make Giardini Naxos one of my favourite Italian destinations.

Recanati Beach and Lungomare, with their soft yellow sand and clear turquoise waters, are a bustling holiday hub. Shops, hotels, restaurants and pizzerias abound on the beachfront. Popular sports include kayaking, sailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and wind surfing. A small but bustling fishing port adds to the vibrant activity, attracting locals and visitors alike to this flourishing holiday resort town for relaxation and recreation.

A trip to the old hillside town of Taormina, with its attractive landscape and lush vegetation, allows one to enjoy the breathtaking terrain and bays below. From here, you can easily catch sight of the peak of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.

Shops in town remain open till late. I enjoyed souvenir shopping and picked two beautiful ceramic vases and a puppet of Paladin, a popular Sicilian puppet character who represents a hero knight of the Roman Empire.

What would make a good day trip out of Giardini Naxos?

Answer

What would make a good day trip out of Giardini Naxos?

On the Italian island of Sicily, you can spend a day visiting architecture reminiscent of ancient Greece. In the Valley of Temples, you have the opportunity to visit the remains of the city of Akragas. The site includes 1,300 hectares of land dotted with olive and almond trees. This ancient site dates back to 582 B.C. when the Greeks controlled the island.

A day trip to Catania is a nice change from the beach. When you arrive in the morning, make your first stop the small fish market in the piazza near the Duomo. In the old town, you can walk around the ruins of a Roman amphitheater known as the Teatro Romano and then visit Cattedrale di Sant’ Agata.

Taormina Cathedral Square

Visitors to Giardini Naxos can mingle with locals along the Corso Umberto and in the historic square featuring the Cattedrale di Taormina, a beautiful medieval cathedral dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. This Gothic-style church was originally built in the 13th century but was reconstructed several times during the 15th and 16th centuries. In front of the church in the center of the square is a beautiful fountain with steps all the way around.

Things worth remembering in Giardini Naxos

Fun Fact: The height of Mount Etna varies with time because of its eruptions. Although the mountain has snow for most of the year, the volcano smokes frequently, sometimes creating a fog over Giardini Naxos.

Local Dish: Pescespada alla grigia (grilled swordfish) is my favourite seafood in Giardini Naxos, superbly prepared at the Rendezvous.

Day Trip: Museo archeologico di Naxos, a picturesque park and museum, marks the site of the first Greek settlement in Sicily.

The history of the church dates back to the last quarter of the 17th century. Featuring the Neoclassical work of architect Felice Bottiglieri, the church still retains its original barrel vault and an elegant, marble baptismal font. Inside, there is a wooden statue of the Madonna and a table painted in 1513. Walking through this church is like a step back in time.
