Traveler Stories

Why I love Gallipoli

Gallipoli did more than surprise me: it completely blew me away.

As an explorer at heart, I was immediately drawn to Gallipoli’s Old Town. Connected via bridge to the mainland, the old town transports travelers into Gallipoli’s rich history with its Baroque architecture, natural beauty and old-world charm. I found myself in a maze of stunning cathedrals, 15th century bastions and fortress ruins, with occasional glints of the blue harbor.

This Italian fishing village boasts sparkling turquoise waters and a lively harbor. Add to that the daily bounty of fresh seafood, prepared and served by friendly locals, and I had to extend my stay in this newly-discovered gem.

I spent my days exploring Gallipoli’s ports, architecture and untouched beaches, photographing ruins and watching fishermen navigate the waters in their colorful boats. Each day Gallipoli found a new way to amaze me, and each night I fell asleep content beyond words.

What are the areas of Gallipoli that should not be missed?

Answer

What are the areas of Gallipoli that should not be missed?

Start by traveling around the old part of the city. Though largely square with four corner towers, the Gallipoli castle also uniquely features a fifth tower that is used during the summer months as a movie theater and hosts a number of other events. If you’re in Gallipoli in the summer, be sure to check out the event schedule for any concerts or art galleries held in the tower.

As you explore the tower, make stops at the many churches along the way that feature paintings, architecture and woodwork dating back to medieval times.

The Civic Museum of Gallipoli houses a wide variety of collections that cover archeology, biology and history. Some of the artifacts found here include an array of unusual musical instruments.

Is it better to drive, walk or use public transportation in Gallipoli?

Answer

Is it better to drive, walk or use public transportation in Gallipoli?

Gallipoli encompasses 40 square kilometers, or 20 square miles, and most of the attractions are in one concentrated area, which makes navigating around the community on foot a possibility if you stay in centrally located lodgings.

If choosing to drive, the nearby community of Brindisi offers car rental services. Parking in the new part of the city requires a fee but remains free in the old part of Gallipoli.

The city also has bus and rail services that travel to outlying locations. Check online for transportation schedules so that you can plan in advance what areas you can see on a single bus or train ticket. You may be able to get discounted fare by buying a multiple-day pass in advance.
