Traveler Stories

Why I love Elba

Before I went to Elba, I had often wondered whether nature and human culture could ever combine perfectly.

I hardly needed to get off the ferry before I got my answer. Tree-covered rocky landscapes were hovering peacefully near pristine turquoise waters. But what struck me were the towns and centuries-old villas perched above the docks with sleepy boats lapping gracefully in the water.

I was immediately kicking myself and feeling stupid for only booking two days on the island. I hurried so as not to waste a second, and followed signs to a company which organises snorkelling and diving. I felt even more stupid when I asked the man who gave me my snorkel, ’so where is the right place to go?’

He reached his arm out to gesture at the beautiful panorama behind me, ’could anywhere possibly be wrong?’

Answer

How can I take advantage of the many bike routes in Elba?

Rent a bike in town, or bring your own and start exploring the area! There is nearly no end to the bike trails you can find on this Mediterranean island. Routes from Rio nell’Elba going to Porto Azzurro are known as prime training spots for many top cyclists looking for challenging technical trails. However, you don’t have to be professional to enjoy the many paved bike routes, sun and sea paths, and comfortable dirt bike paths spread throughout Elba.

There are trails designed for beginners and other paths that are more family friendly. As an added perk, you can make a few pit stops along the way to enjoy regional sights or sip on some local coffee in the warm sun.

What kind of expectations should tourists have of the beaches in Elba?

Answer

What kind of expectations should tourists have of the beaches in Elba?

Elba has a wide assortment of beaches, from well-maintained resort beaches not far from local hotels and amenities to more natural beaches offering a break from the typical vacation crowd.

Cavoli, located on the southern coast, is the "party beach" primarily populated by the young. This is where many locals hang out, so for singles or couples without children, this beach may be ideal. Sansone, which is found along the road from Portoferraio, is more a typical tourist beach where families can get some sun or do a little swimming.

Sant’Andrea is a smaller, sandy beach offering amazing views for tourists who just want peace and relaxation. There are also beautiful gardens behind the beach at Le Ghiaie.
