Chianti

About Chianti

The Chianti area is home to Italy’s most famous and historic wine, Chianti Classico DOCG, called “Classico” because it’s first and original Chianti wine. It’s produced in the rolling Tuscan hills between Florence and Siena in the heartland of Chianti. You can easily drive to both cities from Chianti.

About Chianti Classico Wine:A very dry and medium-bodied ruby red wine with a flowery, fruity bouquet that blends violet and iris aromas with scents of ripe berries. Don’t miss its spicy aftertaste with hints of cinnamon. Its complex and well structured flavor is more refined than Chianti DOCG.

Grape blend: At least 80% Sangiovese grapes and 20% from other red grape varieties.

When it’s best to drink: 5-7+ years for Chianti Classico, 8-10+ for Chianti Classico Reserve.

Pairings for Chianti Classico:Enjoy your Chianti Classico with hearty Tuscan red meat dishes such as ‘Bistecca alla Fiorentina’ T-Bone steak, roast lamb or pork, chicken with spicy ‘alla Diavola’ sauce as well as like tart ‘Pecorino’ sheep’s cheese.

Top places to stay in the Chianti wine region

The Chianti Classico DOCG wine area has many great places to stay. The problem is choosing between them! Here’s a few tips to help:

  • Greve in Chianti: A bustling market town in the valley with a wine museum, historic butchers shop, and many restaurants, bars and places to taste Chianti Classico - Quintessentially ‘Chiantishire’.
  • Castellina in Chianti: A small medieval hilltop town with a busy main street lined with noble palaces and shop fronts overflowing with local produce, not to mention places to taste and buy locally grown Chianti Classico wines.
  • Radda in Chianti: A picturesque medieval walled town at Chianti’s center. It’s surrounded by vineyards, frescoed churches and castles, such as the famous Castello di Volpaia winery. Quiet and relaxing.
  • Gaiole in Chianti: The nearest town to Siena, you can visit the Castello di Brolio, where modern Chianti Classico was invented by Barone Ricasoli.
  • San Casciano di Val di Pesa: The closest to Florence, this quiet haven is known for the excellent wineries surrounding the town and is a launch site for balloon rides over Chianti.
