Traveler Stories

Why I love Campania

I found shelter in a quaint gelato shop after getting caught in the rain in Naples.

I was searching for the train station, and this being the era before the advent of smartphones, there were no helpful apps to guide me. Refusing to carry a map out of fear of looking like a tourist, I stubbornly wandered the streets aimlessly as the storm clouds gathered and threatened overhead. As the drizzle gradually intensified into a downpour, and lacking an umbrella to keep me dry, I finally gave up my search and ducked into the nearest open shop I could find. Lucky for me, it turned out to be a friendly gelateria. I can honestly say they had the best strawberry gelato I have ever tasted.

How do I make the most out of a trip to Pompeii?

Answer

How do I make the most out of a trip to Pompeii?

Wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle! A stay in Campania would not be complete without a thorough exploration of the ruins of Pompeii, but remember, you?l be covering up to 170 acres, the roads are uneven and all that walking will make you thirsty.

There are certain sites that should not be overlooked, such as the Stabian Baths, the brothel and the Temple of Isis. Make an agenda before you head out so as not to accidentally miss out on any of these sites.

Insider Tip: Plan your trip around December or January, and you?l be able to avoid the crowds and enjoy the sites serenely and at your own pace.

Insider Tip: Don? bother with the guided tours. Exploration is more fun on your own.

How do I get to the island of Capri?

Answer

How do I get to the island of Capri?

The only way to reach the island is via either hydrofoil or ferry. This only adds to the fun since you?l be able to include an exciting hydrofoil ride on your itinerary.

Boats leave from the ports in Naples and Sorrento year-round while sea crossings are available from Amalfi, Salerno, Positano and the island of Ischia during the summer months. Public transport is available on the island.

Insider Tip: Taking the hydrofoil will halve the time it takes to get to Capri compared to the ferry.

Insider Tip: Overnight accommodations are available on Capri in case you decide that a day trip is not enough to enjoy and see everything the island has to offer.
