About Apulia Coast

Where to stay on to Apulia coast

The Apulia coast has a wealth of destinations to suit all tastes. Here’s our guide!

Salento Holiday Area

The 'heel' of italy is characterised by its 2 very distinct coastlines. On the western side are miles of wild sandy beaches as far as eye can see. The charming towns of Gallipoli and Porto Cesareo make good bases to explore the wider area.

On the eastern side, the coastline along the Adriatic is much more dramatic with rocky cliffs broken up by sandy coves. Otranto is a top destination in this area, while the quaint town of Fasano offers excellent beachside spa facilities. The large town of Lecce is inland, but it has a good choice of hotel accommodation from which to explore the rest of the Salento region.

Gargano Holiday Area

Gargano may be known as ‘Italy's buttress’, but that description does not do justice to the peninsula of carsic rock, a protected national park rich in forest and wild coastline. Manfredonia, with its impressive fort is the gateway to the area, while the towns of Vieste, Peschici and Rodi Garganico all have a good range of hotels and pleasant sites nearby. The nearby Tremiti Islands, also part of the Gargano national park, are worth the trip thanks to the impressive white cliffs that merge seamlessly into stunning clear waters.

How do I get to the Apulia coast?

Answer

How do I get to the Apulia coast?

Air

The international airports in the region are Bari and Brindisi. Bari offers more services to European hubs and has a strong roster of budget airlines. As it’s much further north, Bari is more practical for the Gargano area. Brindisi caters mainly to budget carriers serving European destinations and regular internal routes too. It’s the best option for those wishing to go to Salento.

Train

Intercity services serve the region from Rome, stopping in Foggia, Barletta, Bari, Brindisi and Lecce. It takes approx. 5 hours from Rome to Lecce. A good network of local trains and buses covers the whole region from the main cities.

Car

2 motorways converge on the Apulia region. From Naples and Rome on the west side of Italy, and another from the north, with the route sticking to the east coast of Italy all the way up to Venice.

Boat

The ports of Bari and Brindisi have ferry services to numerous destinations in Greece, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia.
