Pension Carantania - Vienna

The locatin is fantastic. It is only a short distance from the city center. The room was very comfortable, and Fr. Held was very accomodating.

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon, and were surprised to find our key sellotaped to the front door and keys to the other rooms just hanging around the corner. We didn't see a lot of the staff at all during our stay. The hotel itself was clean enough, and the breakfasts did appear somehow in the mornings (but weren't cleared away until the following day). We were in the city during Euro 2008 & accommodation was tight, so otherwise may not have chosen to stay here.

Doorbell didn't work on arrival so we had difficulty getting into the pension. A few problems of maintenance: eg shaver plug in bathroom didn't work. Bed and bedlinen on 3rd bed of triple room inadequate considering the price paid. Warm and moderately comfortable and within easy reach of city centre.

Although I had a reservation, the pension was not open. The Phone number indicated was not answered all night. I had to find another Pension. They do a really lousy job on welcoming ... They did not charge me the night after a phone call o 5 minutes in bad English. Never again.

The overall stay met our expectations, as we were pleased by the family atmosphere and the quality of the services. There was a problem with the parking space though - there was none provided by the hotel - but we managed to solve it. Anyway, we'll be back with pleasure anytime.

The owners are wonderful and accommodating. There were a few problems but the owners took care of them immediately. I would stay there again, no question regardless of the tram passing by on occasion.

My '0' responses result from the fact that I ultimately was unable to stay at the Carantania. The room I had requested was to have been a quiet single. When I arrived I was escorted to the reserved room, which was facing a very busy traffic street with cars and trams. I was then informed that there was only one quiet room at the Carantania, and it was a double, not a single (which is what I had requested). All rooms but the one remaining double, were facing the busy street. I declined the room, and the owner was understanding and helpful. She arranged for a room for me at a different and nearby pension, which was quiet, clean, and quite comfortable.

Positiv: Raum groß und sauber. Frühstück umfangreich und lecker. Personal / Betreiber flexibel (Ankunft 23:00 war möglich), freundlich und informiert. Verkehrsanbindung (U-Bahn, Strasen-Bahn hervorragend. Verbesserungswürdig: Doppelbett bestand aus zwei recht harten Einzelbetten => Rahmen-Bretter in der Mitte.

"quietness of rooms" depends on which one you get. most of them are quiet to the backyard. i got one to the main street with tramways running from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. beside this it was an excellent stay.

Gromes was so beautiful at taking care of all my needs! She was caring and warm. It made my first time in Vienna be a memorable experience!! Great coffee and breakfast! Very clean rooms and spacious!! Very close to bus and U-Bahn station. I will go back there.

Very helpful and kind host. Itr was a pleasure to stay there. I'm sure we make it to come back. Public transport close by. Persons coming from quiete areas with notice the trams passing by.

Probably at the top end of the price range for a Pension but certainly as good as hotels where we paid much more. Location especially suits arriving/leaving via Westbahnhof.

A very nice pension. The personal was very friendly, the room was large and clean, the breakfast was really good, the location is excellent, it took us just a few minutes to get to the city center. I would recommend this pension and definetely stay there again!

Suffice it to say that before leaving Pension Carantania I booked another week there at Easter. Frau Hannelore Gromes and Christoph Weinfurter are absolutely marvellous (just to give you one example among many of their kindness and hospitality, on the morning of Christmas Eve, when I returned to my room after breakfast, there was a box of Mozartkugeln and a card saying Happy Christmas from them!). I would recommend this pension to anyone; I have seldom been made more welcome or more comfortable - and it is so very convenient for getting around Vienna.
