Your travel guide to Benfica Stadium
Whoever happens to look for lodgings near the Estadio Da Luz in Lisbon should be made aware of the fact that they will spend some time in the vicinity of one of European football's most legendary stadiums. Although the current incarnation of the stadium is a miracle of architectural modernism, inaugurated in 2003 with a friendly match between Benfica and National Montevideo, the stadium's name (literally: "Stadium of Light") comes from the nickname attributed by Lisbon residents to the old stadium built in 1954.
Old Lisbon's Da Luz belongs, as the current one does, to the city's main club, Benfica, and had a capacity of 12,000 people. It was the backdrop of some of past football glories' best and most spectacular achievements, theatre of legendary matches between legendary teams, as well as being Europe's largest stadium until its demolition, in 2002, in order to make room for the current structure.
Among the most important players to have graced the Da Luz's green grass, we could not forget "Pantera Nera" Eusebio da Silva Ferreira, or more simply, Eusebio. Remembered by everyone as the man who brought Portugal to the top of world football glory, he wore the red shirt of Benfica for fifteen years, marking a momentous era for Lusitanian football.
Among other internationally-famed footballers who played for Benfica in this stadium it is worth mentioning Brazilian national and world champion Aldair and Belgian goalkeeper Michel Preud'Homme, as well as tough Portuguese defender Humberto Coelho.
The"Da Luz" Stadium was the setting of numerous international tournaments: in 1967 it hosted the final of the Champions League, in 1991 the final of the Junior world championship and in 2004, the final of the European championship. This year it will host the last match of the Champions League for the second time in its history, an unmissable event for true sports lovers.
