Your travel guide to Gare Montparnasse
Montparnasse is an area of Paris nestled on the left bank of the Seine River. During the 1920s, the cafes and bars in this area were a popular meeting place for artists. The cafes rented tables to the artists for hours at a time as a place to discuss and mull over creative ideas. Both Montparnasse and the Gare Montparnasse are located in the city’s 14th arrondissement, an area well-known for its Breton restaurants specializing in crepes and its distinct artsy flair.
The Gare Montparnasse: History
The Gare Montparnasse is a railway station that became famous for its derailment in 1895. The train careened off the station concourse and plummeted onto the Place de Rennes. Replicas of the train crash can be seen at museum chain buildings. By 1934, the Gare Montparnasse was moved in place of an urban renewal project. Take the fast elevator up to get an amazing panoramic view of the city from Montparnasse Tower to the terrace. Other points of interest include the Eiffel Tower and Paris Catacombs Museum.
Getting Around in Montparnasse
If you need to get to other major French cities from your Montparnasse hotel, to visit places such as Brest, Lorient and Bordeaux, take a ride on the Gare Montparnasse. The station is also served by suburban trains that lead to the southwest and west of Paris. There is also an extensive network of buses that are easily identified on the streets, and the city also has rentable bikes. If you’re out for a day of dining or shopping, trekking on foot is pleasant.
