The pub had been refurbished since I booked. The rooms are very clean and modern. The location was excellent right on the city wall, not even a 5 minute walk and you was in the middle of everything! The staff were very friendly and helpful, they gave you a code for the back door if you wish to stay out late and the pub has closed. The breakfast was very nice and was served between 8-9. I would defiantly stay again!!

The Gillygate Pub was & is excellent value for money. For my Wife & I it was a special trip as we were celebrating our Silver Wedding Anniversary. Everything was spot on the location & the surroundings. All the Staff, Customers & locals were very Friendly. We could not have asked for more, we will definitely stay for a 3rd time.

The Gillygate is in an ideal location with parking around the back. The bar area is inviting and cosy, the included breakfast is delicious. The only down side was our room decor was dated but the rooms are due to be refurbished in may. Would would stay again in the future.

shower and toilet area in need of a good clean, black mold between tiles, broken window, Toilet door filthy, wiped dirt off with a piece of wet tissue, but required a good clean, Not able to take shower due to the condition as it made me feel sick, I have owned a B & B myself so I know what it should be like for customers.

The location was excellent and it was a large room, However, on opening the en-suite bathroom door..the smell hits you. There was also damp and mould on the walls. There was no heating or hot water on the 2nd night and the traffic noise was continuous all night. Will never be staying there again!

An explanation of where the parking is would help. This may seem a small thing but not with York traffic! Will go back as it is so convenient for seeing York and visiting the area.

This was a nice, clean spacious twin room I shared with my sister for a trip to York. We stayed one night. Its location is ideal for the centre of York, being just a few mins walk away. Friendly staff, who also offered to keep our bags after check out, so we could shop some more. We had breakfast, there was a reasonable choice but we had the fried breakfast which was nice. The road at the front can be a bit busy and noisy but this did not really bother me, but my sister was bothered by it.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the Gillygate. A few issues with room maintenance but these were far outweighed by the price paid and the convenience of being able to park and walk to all you would want to see in York. Excellent breakfast too.

No more food in the pub. Hotel needs renovation. Very noisy, because of the main street.

We have a series of contrasting memories of The Gillygate; indeed it is an odd mixture of friendly, convenient and tatty. There is a car park behind the pub, just a few minutes' walk from York Minster, the City Walls and many good eating places. The staff were all friendly and welcoming, and our cases were instantly whisked to our room on the second floor. It was clean and comfortable with a small en-suite and plenty of wardrobe space. We were not disturbed by road noise, and breakfast next morning was very tasty and cheerily served. That's the good news. The pub itself is dingy and depressing beyond words; certainly not somewhere to linger. The climb from the back door took us over threadbare stair-carpets past walls and doors which had been strangers to the paintbrush for many years. While our room was in good order the outside windowsills were peeling down to the bare wood. Perhaps the Gillygate has absentee owners, for it seems odd that such hospitable staff would not notice that the property which has so much going for it in many respects is in desperate need of a fundamental revamp.

Good food, clean rooms, friendly staff, very centralfor touring York on foot--these are the plus points. Presentation of hotel`s exterior needs improvement, not suitable for light sleepers as Gillygate is busy early and late, access to rooms is not suitable for anyone who cannot climb steep stairs.
