The rooms were nice and a good size, same goes for the bathroom. More importantly they were clean. Service was excellent, staff was polite, friendly and helpful. The only "downside" was the noise in the room during the day. Since we were located right at rialtobridge we were expecting this, also the music from the restaurant below was loud but both were only really noticable during the day so this really wasn't a problem. Price-quality wise, we would recommend.

As stated in the reviews, it is somewhat confusing to find the Rio Alto Hotel since you have to go to another hotel to check in. Since we are used to having air conditioning, it was disconcerting to learn, when we got there that it was off from October to March? Because of not having ACC we left the room windows open for a while and where attacked by hoards of mosquitoes while sleeping (the bites still hurt). After sealing the windows and killing at least twenty mosquitoes, we didn't have any more problems (although we noticed that the walls had the remains of tens of dead mosquitos who presumably attacked other guests. The food in the included breakfast was very low quality. The Hotel has a good location right next to Rio Alto Bridge and the surroundings were safe and beautiful.

We spent five nights from sept.14, at the Rio Alto i room no 5, overlooking a small canal and bridge. The hotel is very convenient to the major sites in Venice. Walking distance to everything. Hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was OK, nothing like the norwegian hotel breakfast, but quite enough. The breakfast room was small. No mosqitoes and no noise during the night with the windows closed and AC on. A highly recommended place to stay.

We loved our stay here. We only stayed two nights on our first visit to Venice, and the location is ideal. Easy access from the water taxi, and to the main square, great central location for what we wanted. We requested a canal view, so there was a lot of noise on the bridge from passersby, but that was our request. Cheese, bread and canned fruit breakfast, hot cocoa, coffee, tea all great. Spacious room, like a little apartment since there were three of us, two beds in one spacious room, separate bedroom for third person, great for three older ladies. Love it, stay here! One floor up, pack lightly. Literally five minutes from Rialto bridge, but get streets from hotel. Ck in at one, room at the other.

Hotel is very nice, clean and spacious, also close to the city center, but it was confusing because we had to check in at bartholomeo hotel, which is a short walk through a maze, we arrived at night and could not enter the hotel since it's locked,we were tired and had to wait until a kind local helped to call the receptionist for us, the person came and he was very unfriendly, but the other receptionist the next day (the one with glasses) was very nice and helpful

The Rio Alto was an excellent place to stay if you wanted to be right near all of the action in Venice. Very convenient! The room was just a minute or two from the Rio Alto bridge. We had a triple room in their annex (Hotel Bartholomew) with windows overlooking the canal in which the gondoliers went by. Fun! We had our adult daughter with us and all of us had plenty of room. The staff was very helpful and professional. Ennio is outstanding - he helped us in every way and was so welcoming. We invited him to come to the US and look us up! One iffy thing was the breakfast. If you like a good breakfast of high quality, it's not here. This hotel was completely booked and very busy when we stayed in late May, and my guess is they always have a large breakfast crowd. There was a lot of food, but not so good quality. If they would just up the caliber of the coffee and have some fresh fruit and pastries, this would make a big difference.

Rio Alto is a lovely little hotel, our room was a nice size. We had a room with a canal view which was nice the only problem was that there was a small bridge right outside our window that a lot of people used so it could get a small bit noise. The hotel is situated about 2 minutes walk from Rialto Bridge and about 10 minutes walk from St Marks Square. I would recommend this hotel to other people planning on going to beautiful Venice.

The hotel staff are excellent and very helpful. However, the hotel is somewhat difficult to find. The hotel is in one location and the rooms are in an other location. For those handicapped as I am, it is difficult to get to the rooms located on the second and third floors. However, I will say that they are located almost a stone throw away from all the good visiting sites.

I have no complaints about the place except i could not sleep with the heat and it was only March.. make sure the air con is working if it is summer time ours was not working and the weather was hot for March. You have to pay for WIFI which was a pain!

Specific directions from the Rio Alto Bridge to Calla de la Bissa and the location of the hotel should be prominently displayed. We battled to find the little "lane" as it was not indicated on any map. Or specific indications to the other hotel where you are supposed to book in first?

It is a small hotel 4 block away from Rialto bridge. Staff was really helpful. I will go back again. The only thing is that because the hotel is just on a canal mosquitoes can get into your room. Keep the room closed and use AC. There is no elevators like in almost all this kind of hotels Venice . Good luck!

Clean room, friendly and helpful staff, great location about 5-10min by foot from St Mark's Square, but aweful breakfast (at least compared to German hotels) without any fresh fruit, wholemeal bread/rolls or cold cuts. Was enough to keep us filled until the afternoon tramezzino. I think there was a festival around the city (which we did not see though), which might be the explanation for the exaggerated hotel prices in mid October (450 € per room for 3 nights). The higher price for the room with "canal view" was okay, but wouldn't have been necessary, as you really had to lean out of the window to see it. All-in-all: Nice accomodation, great city, would consider staying there again.

Rio Alto is more an apartment suites rather a hotel inside Venice, which was one of my roommate's dream. Our triple had two cozy rooms with a comfortable bath, Air conditionig and a fabulous view towards one of Venice's small canals. The place was well located, quiet during the night and very lively during the day, close to San Marco Square and Rialto Bridge. The 5 room place is run by Hotel Bartolomeo, which is just 40-50 meters from our building. We took breakfast there and it was the best we had during our trip. It is like having your own rented apartment inside Venice!

we, two friends, stayed in room nr.5. canal view and near a bridge, so there is some noise also in the late evening and early morning. but the windows keep almost all noise outside, the room has AC. the bed is very big, the bathroom is medium size and sufficent. the service is very friendly. breakfast varies from fruits to bread and pastries to yoghurt, so good and rich for your days in venice. the location of the hotel near rialto bridge, max. 15 mins from marcus square, is another extraplus. so if we visit Venice again, we would choose Rio Alto instantly.

Our second time in Venice, and we were straight back to the Rio Alto after our stay last time, and again we were very impressed for the price paid. This time we were in Canal View room number 1 which has a seperate 2nd bedroom with a single bed and seperate air con. It does not have the four poster bed or bath like room 2 does - only a shower. Rio Alto is a seperate building a few mins from the Hotel Bartolomeo where you check in and out and have breakfast, but the Rio Alto is in a great spot 5 mins walk to the Rialto bridge, and about 10 to St Marks. There are great restaurants nearby (the ones on the opposite side the Grand Canal were a favourite) as well as a Coop supermarket nearby. I loved just hanging out the window and watching the way a city on water operates! Without a doubt the next time we go to Venice we will be straight back to the Rio Alto.

6/28/11: Mateo was a great help, went out of his way to find transportation info for us. Room #3 top unit, windows facing inside, is quite. Watch out for mosquitoes though. We got a few shots leaving the window open instead of AC. Check in instruction was clear, breakfast could get boring on your third day without fruit and some change, it gets us start out the day. Wi-Fi is 2e for 4hours, not bad rate. Cleaning staff is quick and efficient. Pretty basic room, the price could be a little bit lower from what we're used to.

Four of the Five rooms in Rio Alto overlook a smaller but important canal in Venice close to the main drawcard (Rialto Bridge) hence it is easier than most to find. The rooms also overlook a Ponte (bridge) which is a main thorougfare to San marco. This provides much fun people watching. Rio Alto is independent of the check in hotel but better - more like private apartments straigt off a walkway. Spend at least 2 nights so you have a chance to get your bearings. Only negative is cramped and boring bread based breakfast.

The twin bed room was quiet and adequate, however, the reservation did not indicate that breakfast was in another property, Hotel Bartolomeo, several twisted streets away. In addition, with over 800 channels on the television, not one was in English, not even BBC. The staff was uneven in helpfulness. Out of the 6 people we encountered about half fell over backwards to assist, the other half was almost surly. There is no public area or staff at this location. It is all at the other hotel. Thus to ask a question, you have to walk to the other location, rain or shine.

From train station take Vaporetto to Rialto Bridge (one stop). Rio Alto is an annex. You have to go to the Bartholemeo Hotel first. So a couple of signs to that Hotel from Rialto Bridge (only 150 metres) would definitely help- especially when loaded down with luggage. Ideal location- 1/2Km from St Mark's Square. Venice is a rabbit warren so you need a good map or you will get very lost! Breakfast is healthy and enough- except fresh fruit should replace tinned fruit. Reception excellent and multi-lingual- great help!

The room was large and clean, the bathroom was tiny and the fixtures need upgrading. The location was excellent but be warned - the lovely canal and bridge are busy and very noisy which makes it impossible to sleep with the windows open. This is not a problem in the middle of winter or summer (when the air conditioning is turned on) but we were there at the end of April and the weather was quite warm. The room became very hot and stuffy during the night with the windows closed, but we could not leave them open because of the noise from passing boats and people. This spoilt an otherwise very enjoyable stay. Had the air con been turned on, we would have said the Rio Alto was fantastic value for money. As it is we would not book there again. This is a shame as the staff were all very friendly and helpful and the location was excellent.

Compared to the other hotels close to the central attractions, the prices are cheaper. The rooms are very clean, quiet and comfortable. The Rio Alto is an annex to a bigger hotel close by (should be less than 100 metres) where the breakfast is served. Breakfast was reasonable with cheese (two sorts), butter, jams and jellys and honey, cakes, juices (not fresh fruits), cereals, yoghurt, milk and coffee and hot chocolate for drinks (espresso and capuccino need to be asked for).

*hotel was difficult to find* but a great find once we did. To get there, from Rialto Bridge, walk east towards open square with statue. Imagine statue walking backwards to the north wall of the square and turning to his left (east). Walk down that corridor, wind your way through the passages avoiding dead ends, you'll pass a tiny wine bar, keep going around to the left and Hotel Bartelomeo was there-- that's where you check in, eat breakfast, & use internet. As for the Rio Alto, it was fairly quiet, had an excellent location, was clean & private, and overall great. Not your usual hotel w/ a front desk experience, it left us feeling as though we'd rented an apartment in Venice centre-- very independent. Breakfast at Bartelomeo was okay. I imagine it's better than it used to be, but still lacked "breakfast-y" hot foods. Mostly dry pastries & cakes, plain bread, cheese, two kinds of cereal, yogurt, coffee, and ACE juice (an Italian orange/carrot/lemon concoction). Generally, Rio Alto was great for the price.

Pros: - the hotel is super central - the rooms are very clean and renovated Cons: - the breakfast could be much better - the breakfast is in another hotel (1min by food) - if you don't choose canal view, the rooms are dark due to the next building just 2 meter in front of the windows. But if you don't plan to stay that much time in your hotel room, this kind of rooms are a cheap way of having a nice room. Conclusion: we can highly recommend the hotel because of the good price and the still very nice hotel rooms.

Everyone says this hotel is hard to find, and they’re right – because they all made the same mistake we did. Instead of heading down the alley directly in front of the Rialto vaperatto stop, head left to the Rialto Bridge (keeping the canal on your left). Once you get to the bridge take a right and head into the main square with the statue. From there the map on Venere is very clear and it is a mere 100 paces away through the archway on the left. The hotel was quaint, and quiet and in an absolutely perfect location. The staff was enormously friendly and nice and overly helpful. The Rio Alto is actually a guest house owned by a larger hotel around the corner. You have to check in and eat breakfast at the larger hotel. This is a not a problem however, and the value of this hotel we found to be excellent. I’d highly recommend it!

Both hotels are a little hard to locate at first, but if you ask any of the local people they will direct you. Rooms were clean & comfortable and the staff were friendly & helpful. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Las habitaciones del hotel Rio Alto son sencillas pero estan bien en relación con el precio. El desayuno es un poco pobre, y se sirve en otro hotel a pocos metros del Rio Alto.

To register to this hotel, you have to go to another one, if you forget that, you are done for because the hotel is impossible to find. The rooms are very small and the AC smelled like old cheese.

It is impossible to find this hotel. You need to find hotel Bartolomeo first althouight it is difficult to find this one as well. Otherwise, good location, near Rialto bridge, restorans and shops around, clean and pleasant hotel. Breakfast could be better, but receptionists are extremely helpfula and kind.

This hotel was extremely hard to find! The hotel is offered as an extension of Hotel Bartolomeo which is also difficult to find. I searched for about 45 minutes for this hotel until I came across a plain door that matched the address I had for the hotel and rang the buzzer only for the reception person to come and meet me and take me to a far away front desk for check in. The hotel had a nice and extremely large interior but was too difficult to find for me to give a rave review. Not to mention I went to the Hotel Rialto thinking it was this hotel and had the people at the check in desk there tell me I had the entirely wrong hotel and that I will have wish that I had stayed there instead. It was quite embarrasing.

It was a wonderful location with a canal view. Friendly helpful staff. Breakfast was lacking fresh fruit and minimal. The Rio Alto is an annex to a hotel a few streets away, where the front desk and breakfast are located. For the price it had a great location and ambiance.

If I ever come back to Venice I would stay here again. The location is perfect. We were not in the main hotel so we had to walk to there for breakfast but that worked out just fine. I had just a little trouble interpreting the map as to which side of the bridge we had to be on - but most people would have been able to find their way just fine.I would not recommend this hotel to older travelers as there was no elevator - you have to walk up a coulple of flights of stairs, upon check in the staff did carry my bag up for me.

I highly recommend the Rio Alto, with one major reservation. The rooms are beautiful, and you can't beat the price! Rio Alto is also very close to the Rialto bridge, and was so centrally located that we had no problem walking everywhere that we wanted to go. Breakfast was a touch disappointing, but we generally prefer to eat at a bar anyway. The only major drawback to this hotel is that it is VERY noisy. It is near to a major tourist draw, and has many restaurants in the vicinity, both of which meant that there were crowds of people walking past at all hours. It is also on one of the bigger canals, which meant that there quite often were boats blaring their radios going past. Even with the windows closed and shuttered, it was very noisy. I am a very light sleeper, and based on previous reviews mentioning the noise issue, I brought along a set of noise-reducing earphones, which I wore while sleeping. My husband is not at all a light sleeper, and he was occasionally disturbed by the noise. Overall, I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants excellent value for their money and a central location, and who sleep soundly. People who don't sleep soundly should be alright as long as they invest in a good pair of earplugs before leaving home.

The hotel was amazing! It's in a great location, was spacious, and clean. The staff was very polite and always willing to help. The map provided got us to the hotel quickly... we took one wrong turn, but that's to be expected. Once we found the square, there were signs that led us there. Then, a member of the staff personally walked us over to the Rio Alto. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Breakfast was good, but could get crowded and we were constantly running out of coffee. That being said, the staff was right there to re-fill everything and did so with a smile on their faces. I would definitely recommend this hotel and if I'm ever lucky enough to go back to Venice, this will be my first choice.

A wonderful place to stay. Newly renovated, clean and spacious rooms; centrally located. Our only complaint is the noise from occasional late night revelers and early morning delivery boats on the canal. However, the noise factor would not be enough to stop us from staying there again. Its central location, ambience, and price are unbeatable.

I went to Italy with a friend. We went to 4 different regions of the country in 2 weeks. We booked all of our hotels through Venere and all were great choices! The Rio Alto in Venice was one of our favorites because of the location. It was convenient to get to from the Rialto Bridge where the boat dropped us off & was walking distance from everything in Venice. Our room was right on one of the side canals so it had a great view. Had it not been for the other Venere customers reviews though, I probably wouldn't have found it! It's just a random wooden door set between shops in a busy area. Thankfully I remembered someone else's review pointing that out. You are actually supposed to check in at the main hotel 1st to check in & then they'll take you to your room a few blocks over in the Rio Alto but I missed that information somewhere. That's the only thing I would specifically mention. We actually liked looking like we were walking up to our apartment every night vs. walking into a big hotel. We felt blended into the culture a bit more. Great location, great price & convenient to everything!

A faultless hotel which we would certainly visit again. The location & staff were excellent & our room (number 5) looked, smelled & felt very clean - a great first impression which was maintained throughout. It was lovely having the canal view though there was some noise. That said, it didn't stop us sleeping after a good day's exploring! The standard of decoration was very high in our room & everything was well fitted & worked perfectly. A well appointed room. My only slight criticism would be of the breakfast room - very cramped & easily filled. Be prepared to not find a seat on arrival. Breakfast was standard fare for the type of hotel - no nasty surprises or wonderful revelations. No lifts & access might be a problem for wheelchair users. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a central base from which to explore this beautiful city. The location alone makes it a first rate choice!

A breeze to get there from Marco Polo airport via water bus. Great location close to Rialto Bridge, you walk out of your room and you are in the heart of Venice. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast included was fairly ordinary, but that seemed the case for all of Italy. Would highly recommend this place.

Stayed 2 nights, liked the old building and surrounding v much - all v in keeping with the unique feel of the older parts of Venice. Hugely comfortable bed. Breakfast a bit of a squash and rather limited food, but excellent coffee. Wonderful location near the Rialto; central but v quiet and private. Good value in an expensive city.

The staff were very friendly and also very knowledgeable and helpful. They gave us good advice about how to get to other islands and answered all the questions that we asked. The location was ideal, as it was about 2 minutes to the Rialto Bridge and about 10-15 min walk to San Marco square. So it was a perfect location for getting to all the areas of Venice.

An interesting hotel, lovely staff. Quaint, hey, it's Venice and it didn't cost the earth. Luckily I paid a bit extra and had a room overlooking a canal. Breakfast was poor, but what the heck! make sure you understand the directions - it's a maze of little alleyways, and you have to report to another hotel first. Iff like me you look for the Rio Alto, youv'e got no chance - it's an annex; get accurate directions or your toast! Venice - breath-taking, we loved it

the hotel is actually part of Hotel Bartolomeo, just round the corner. We were there for 2 nights and didn't have a great start to our stay - the air conditioning in our room was faulty and stank like sewage when it was turned on, needless to say we couldn't have it on. After a few attempts to rectify the situation with the reception staff at Bartolomeo we were eventually moved rooms and got one with a canal view, which was nice. The breakfast was over in Bartolomeo and was very basic. The hotel's location is ideal for seeing the various attractions in Venice. The vaporetto (water bus) stop was about a minutes walk and we did all of our travelling around this way.

What a great find. Highly recommended. Had the canal view room, and this made the stay that much better! Four poster bed, decent air con. Watching the gondola's go past the room. Quite noisy with the window open, but silent with the windows and shutters closed. Amazing. very close to everything. Rialto bridge only minitues away and about 10mins wasy walk to Piazza San Marco. Check in at Bartolomeo and service there was fantastic. Only issue was the breakfast was quite limited, but with everything else about this stay such exceptional value for money it doesn't matter. Will definitely stay again (hopefully soon) and very happy to recommend to others.

Excellent central location beside Rialto bridge. We only had two days so it was a great base to explore, rest, explore. The room was perfect and we felt like we really stayed in Venice as our room overlooked a small canal. While you do hear outside noise sometimes it felt more like ambience! and added to the authenticity of the place. There is no elevator so if stairs are a problem for you be careful to ask for a room on 1st floor.
