Very nice hotel. The rooms are very comfortable and even bigger then some off those in 3 stars hotels. Location is good also - not far from key places and just 1 min from the vaporetto stop. Special thanks to the hotel personal - very friendly and helpful. Definitely I would stay in this hotel again if had chance to visit Venezia again. Can recommend it to every one.

As with other places where we stayed in Italy, the inside is somewhat better than the outside. Alloggi Barbaria is in a narrow lane, but very close to Fondamenta Nuove (the north shore of Venice), with vaporetto stops, a supermarket and several restaurants. In the other direction there is a restaurant 50m away, and a comfortable walk to San Marco Piazza. As our stay was during Carnivale, we were happy to have that separation. Our rooms were entirely adequate. Breakfast was more spartan than we had become accustomed to, but we'd been staying in small villages, and I suspect we'd been rather spoiled. Alloggi Barbaria's greatest assets are it's (presumed) proprietor, Georgio, and his younger nephew, who stood in for him during part of the day. Their stories, in good English, are from an old Venetian family. They know half the island! An example? Georgio recommended a restaurant near San Marco, and wrote his name on one of their business cards. As we walked into, we hoped, the right place, the owner spotted me checking the card. "You're with Georgio?", she enquired with a big smile. Well we had great food, great service, and a complimentary digestive before we left. Such experiences can really make a stay in a madhouse like Venice!

Would not stay at this hotel again and definitely would not recommend it. Photos are deceiving. Room was spartan and worn; breakfast was a joke - "twinkie"-like item wrapped in plastic and tepid instant coffee (a sin in Italy!). Staff service was perfunctory and certainly not warm and/or welcoming.

Extremely peaceful hotel, with a nice terrace for breakfast. Room is comfortable, extremely quiet. Quickly reached from the airport, not far from San Marco and possibly one of the cheapests in town. The only point which refrains me from giving a full 10/10 is the breakfast. Bread was almost always one day old and dry. Tea was only lukewarm and industrial jams tasteless as usual.

the hotel has good infrastructure, but its owner isnt gentile. he was sometimes rude, we found our room dirty with clothes of other people. We paid a breakfast included tariff and we receive a bad experience with a non boiled water used for a poor warm tea, a coffee served in a dirty teapot and so on. In general the hostel has good potential, but wasnt good enough and we definitely dont recommend it.

the room was large and bathroom clean, with pleasant view over gardens at the back. The breakfast was minimal as expected but the coffee was lukewarm, the milk was often served in a cup instead of a jug and the butter was rancid on one occasion. The hotel provided a quiet base away from the crowds and there were a couple of restaurants nearby. We had a lovely visit to Venice but the hotel could improve the breakfast.

The breakfast is very poor. In mentioning this to the owner, who was non-committal saying that he could not please everybody. However, previous guests are unanimous in stating that the breakfast could be better in view of the price. He could add yogurt, fruits and different types of bread. All he offers is: one prepackaged croissant, two rolls of doughy cold buns, two small philadelphia cheese packages, and two small containers of apricot or cherry marmelade plus the coffee/milk/chocolat which was always cold or lukewarm at best.

The room was very clean and spacious (we travelled as a group of 4), but the breakfast was close to inedible, teapot and milkjug were dirty. The public areas such as breakfast room and floors were crammed with discarded furniture, i.e. not very welcoming. All in all more like a youth hostel than a hotel, for which the price is too high (but then again, Venice in general is very expensive). Okay for groups as several 3- and 4-bed rooms are available and the price is tolerable if shared.

This is a really nice Hotel, which is located in a very nice, quiet neightboorhood of Venice! I truly recomment this Hotel to everybody... Even more if you´re a family with few kids because they can offer a big room with 4 beds. The bathroom was very clean. You will be hosted by a very simple, friendly old man called Giorgio, he serves you a good breakfast in the morning. The only thing I have to add is the location... but nothing impossible to find! It doesnt say here, but I will help you to find it: If you´re at the Central Station in Venice take the boat 42 until the Ospedale Civile (Civil Hospital), when you reach the stop, don´t enter the hospital (thats what I did accidentaly off course :P) turn left and walk until the end and turn right (Only possible way or you´re on the ocean), then you will see the european flag and thats the Hotel! Over all... Everything´s really good in this hotel.

Please read my other review which rates this hotel as a 10 across the board. I am sending this 2nd review to address the two reviews I read from Oct. 2008 which were not as favorable. In short, the writers of those two reviews don't know what they are talking about. They are clearly the exception in all the reviews and they are just plain wrong. They are nitpicking and just off base. Don't let those two reviews discourage you from staying at this great place with great people that can make your visit a great one.

We just returned from our two day stay in Venice and I can't say enough good things about the Alloggi Barbaria Hotel. I have high standards and staying here was a fantastic experience for our family. Fausto was so friendly and helpful, both during our stay and many times before we came (through all my emails to him). Not only was the hotel great but the location is great. It's very close to a water bus stop and close enough to St. Mark's Square to be convenient. The walk to St. Mark's is short but full of pretty streets, canals, and squares and this enhances your visit. We got a great restaurant recommendation which was one of the highlights of our visit. You will be very happy you choose Alloggi Barbaria and the price is right for Venice.

I found Georgio and Fausto extremely welcoming. Fausto's spoken English was of a very high standard. Both Georgio and Fausto were very helpful in suggesting where to eat and how to get around Venice. I stayed with my family for 3 nights (September 2008) and we had a lovely time in very clean and impeccably maintained premises. We felt very safe and relaxed. I hope to see Georgio and Fausto again someday. Thank you for your sincere hospitality. Maria-Luisa

For Venice this is a good hotel for the price when compared to others in this range. It is very clean & the rooms are very spacious for Europe. The staff Fasto & Georgio are friendly & helpful. We had 4 nights in the hotel whilst on holiday & enjoyed our stay. The only item I recommend that the hotel change is the breakfast. It was not good - just barely average. OK in quantity but not in quality. I would pay more money for a better breakfast. The photographs on the web site are a good representation of the hotel room. Some rooms do open directly into the breakfast room which is also the reception area but this is a small family run hotel so be prepared to be friendly. If you like your room away from the public areas you will have to pay more money. I suggest you just eat out for breakfast(however Venice is very expensive for everything)

The only negative comment I have on this property is the challenge getting to it from the stop which the boat transfer service from the airport uses. It doesn't look far on the maps, but it is a challenging hike with multiple suitcases along the waterfront cobble-stoned pathways and stairs to get over several bridges. However, the final destination was worth it and the front desk staff very friendly and informative.

I thought this was a good value. The staff was very friendly and the room was quite clean. Breakfast was a bit dull, and there was some noise from the street at night, but these were minor annoyances. We spent two nights at this facility and found it to be a very adequate place with good location in a quiet, working-class neighborhood of Venice. It is close to the Ospedale stop on the vaporetto and walking distance to St. Mark's Square and other attractions. Giorgio and Fausto were very helpful and friendly. We found their breakfast to be minimally adequate, with coffee, juice, hard rolls and a croissant. The rooms were large but with only basic decor.

We were very pleased with the friendliness of the staff, particularly with our afternoon welcome upon our arrival. Directions and recommendations, etc. were provided and found to be very helpful. The room was basic but a nice size and did contain a small refrigerator with sodas, water, etc. we could purchase along with a safe. The location was out of the way, however, if you're good with maps it was only a 15 minute walk to San Marcos Square and an excellent location for going to the islands and the airport. Our only real complaint was the quality of the breakfast. You receive a packaged croissant and some hard rolls with coffee and juice. Of the 5 hotels we stayed in on our trip, it was the worst for breakfast. Some fresh fruit or yogart, or cereal would have been nice. Otherwise, we would recommend it to other travelers looking for moderately priced accommodations.

Room was good size but a bit odd in that it opens directly onto the reception area which doubles as a breakfast area...not good if you snore loudly! To get to Alloggi Barbraria from the airport is very easy by water, we got the airport vaparetto and for 6 euros we got off at Venice island and had a short walk to the hotel. Access to the hotel is deceptive as it is down what appears to be a narrow alley, but it is what counts as a main street for Venice. Once inside the hotel the welcome was friendly and our rooms were spacious and very clean. There was ample hot water, clean towels everyday and the room had most facilities you need for a short city break. The continental breakfast was basic but ample and Georgio was helpful to provide any requests. Georgio also provided a map on arrival and took time each day to suugest places to visit, how to get there and places to eat. The hotel is in a good location to get to restaurants and bars, and the key sights are about 10 - 15 minutes walk. We ate at an excellent local restaurant on our first night, probably our best meal of the holiday, which was only a 2 minutes walk away - sorry I do not know its name. It does not have to be an expensive holiday in Venice and we found prices very reasonable. All in all I think the hotel is excellent value for money in a central location and easy to find in a city where there are no taxis to drop you off at your hotel door.

We stayed in a double room from July 31- Aug.2 2007. This was our first time in Venice. We had a great welcome from the host who spoke perfect English. He is a very nice man that had maps waiting for us and told how to get to wherever we needed. The room was very nice with ice cold AC, refrigerator with a cheap mini bar and was big enough, with a TV that had many channels, 2 of which were in English. The location is fantastic. It is down a tiny little street and a quick walk from the water bus stop. It is a little off the beaten path which we enjoyed. Nice and quiet, and a couple minute walk to a grocery store where the locals seem to shop and as such had very good prices. The man that worked at the hotel told us about this store. It was also not too far from all Venice has to offer. When we go back to Venice we will stay here again. We had a great time in Venice and much of it was because of this wonderful little hotel. The only minor complaint is that the breakfast is nothing great, pre packaged croisants and coffee that was not on par with other places in Italy. However, the outside balcony where breakfast was served was very nice. I highly recomend this hotel.

Alloggi Barbaria is in a quiet area of Venice very close to the "Hospital" vaporetto stop. Walking to San Marco is not easy if you're not used to Venice's small streets, especially at night. Once you get used to finding your way around, it's not a problem.

We were greeted with a smile and a handshake and Giorgio did everything he could to welcome us and help us. The staff was all very friendly and adaptable to our needs. They gave recommendations for area restaurants and entertainment events when we asked them and were very pleasant. This hotel was a gem that we would definitely return to.

A little walk to the "main" attractions of Venice but situated in the heart of the real Venetians. They provide you with maps upon arrival...including detailed directions to San Marco Square (15 min walk...including the "getting lost" aspect and around the same to the Rialto area). Five minute from a vaporetto stop and there is a local grocery store around the corner. Very nice! Breakfast was just okay. Staff was very friendly and willing to help with anything..particularly reservations!

Stayed here two nights at the end of June and have no complaints. Property is very close to the Ospedale stop on the vaporetto, and is very easy to walk to once you disembark. Room was quiet and comfortable, and large, which was unusual for many European cities. Employees at the property were very friendly, and allowed us to keep our bags in the lobby after we officially checked out, which permitted us to do some extra sightseeing and shopping before taking the train to the next town. I recommend this hotel, and I would definitely stay here again. Breakfast is not much, but I don't judge hotels on this point---and of course since this is Venice, you are going to pay a little more for a room than you would in other cities. Venice is beautiful and worth the extra $$$ for a hotel. Enjoy!

This place is quiet (except for mosquitos in the room, and birds outside), and is kept clean. However I would not necessarily recommend it for a stay in Venice. You could be anywhere, there is nothing distinctive about it. I was disappointed and it didnot fulfil me dreams of a Venetian stay. Perhaps it would suit a large group of students who would have spacious rooms.

We were warmly welcomed by everyone here. Considering Venice is generally expensive, I felt we got a good deal considering location and proximity to everything (including the boats to the islands and airport), service and size and cleanliness of the rooms. Would definately come back. We all loved George!

I very nice place to be. The rooms are very clean. The pictures are accurate. The location is very convenient. There is a grocery store around the block (usually are hard to find in Venice). There is a bus-boat stop around the block as well (great if you want to visit Murano as well). The breakfast is kind of boring, just coffee, tee, bread, butter, jam.

We spent 2 nights in Venice in February 2007. The Alloggi Barbaria was a great place to stay. The room was very clean, spacy and quite new. Its not the most comfortable hotel but there is everything you need: bed, table, chair, wardrobe, clean private bathroom, even TV and fridge. The breakfast was okay, too.

A good quite place, very clean, spacious, near ALL you want to be easyly accessible: the sea, the vaporetto station, islands, St Marco, Rialto, a supermarket and also (very important!) all those venetian districts, beauties, bars and cafes that are not full of tourists yet (but it was out of season). The personnel are really kind, they offered me a venice guide and allowed to leave my luggage in after check out till my train in the evening. Simple hotel but worthy. Thank you Giorgio!

A great place to stay in Venice within easy walking distance to St. Mark's. Venice can be confusing with the narrow streets if you don't have a good map, but the hotel was easy to find and very, very comfortable. Fausto and company do a great job making guests feel very welcome. Definitely consider this hotel! Internet access would be the only addition I would recommend.

In English: When you arrive to Capucine Street, you are unable to imagine the wonderful thing that Alloggi Barbaria is: Clean and bright, extensive and comfortable, ample and ordered, with plenty of details... And if you need any information about Venice or sorroundings, don't doubt to ask Georgio, he will appoint you to any place or restaurant or shop you need (sometimes he know them and you get a discount!). Don't doubt: if you don't need luxury, Alloggi Barbaria is for you!

What can we say? We were very happy, staff were brilliant, very helpful. Breakfast was better than we had expected. In a quiet area but gives an impression of the real Venice. Local supermarket is fantastic. Easy to get to from the water bus from the airport (just don't bring too much luggage!!) Bridges to cross. Would recommend this hotel to anyone. the location from the airport of marcopolo to the hotel using the alilaguna was excellent and the direction from the web was perfect because we arrived around half 11 in the evening it was easy enough to locate. However his service for breakfast needs improvement we were served with fanta orange in the morning. the place was quiet for the evenings and its very close to rialto bridge and san marco and the owner was very good enough to direct us to places and transportation we needed. Its only the hotel that needs extra touch and breakfast.

The room, which was a quadruple room - 1 double and 2 single beds, was clean and spacious, including a stocked fridge, TV and safe deposit box. The only thing missing was a kettle to make a hot drink, much to the disappointment of some of my party who would have like a hot cup of tea of an evening after a hard days sightseeing! The location was ideal for both Venice and the surrounding islands - Murano, Burano and St Michele. Don't be put off by the approach to the hotel entrance, it's a long dark narrow alley way but do watch out for the dog pooh! The breakfast was a typical continental breakfast of bread rolls, and coffee. The prepacked croissants and fizzy fanta orange juice served at breakfast perhaps weren't so typical and didn't go down so well with my party. However overall I thought the accommodation was good value for money.

This is a small hotel close to a vaporetto stop, so it is very easy to get to Alloggi Barbaria. Also, the Hotel is across from the islands of Murano, Burano, Torcello, and San Michel! The staff of three are approachable, helpful, and extremely friendly. Fausto, Giorgio, and Ivana were genuinely and sincerely warm people. Our room was cheerful and immaculate. Our bathroom was also meticulous. My niece and I stayed there for five nights at the beginning of our trip and three at the end. The next time I visit Venice, I would definitely stay at Alloggi Barbaria. Julie Smith, Boston, MA, USA

We thoroughly enjoyed the Alloggi Barbaria. The rooms were clean, spacious and air conditioned. The staff was especially nice and helpful with maps and suggestions of restaurants. We arrived a day before our luggage, and the staff was helpful in finding a pharmacy that was open on a Sunday. Location is ideal - far enough from the throngs of people but close enough to walk everywhere. Also, there is an "Internet Point" just around the corner. I would definitely stay here again!
