Inn Sextantio Albergo Diffuso - Santo Stefano di Sessanio

Via Principe Umberto SNC - Santo Stefano di Sessanio

Price starting from 100 .00
Santo Stefano di Sessanio is a fortified medieval village barely changed since it was built in the Middle Ages. It is located in the mountains of Abruzzo at 1250 meters above sea level, inside the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga natural park and it is a classic example of an Italian medieval hill town, with perimeter walls encircling houses and squares.

The Sextantio project at Santo Stefano di Sessanio with its rooms is set in the dominating central position in the burgh. Besides their historical features and original autochthonous furnishings, the ample 27 rooms come with wood burning fireplaces and heated floors. Each room reveals the original subdivision, design and ‘arte povera’ decor. This project fully respects the local heritage of mountain people.

In the late 1800’s it was home to more than 3000 people who lived and worked on the land. In 1901, 1400 people called Santo Stefano their home, but fled to escape poverty leaving just 50 people remaining. Once a decayed and forgotten village, Santo Stefano di Sessanio has now been restored and resurrected and represents the first attempt at completely restoring and revitalization of one of Abruzzo’s ancient villages for residential purposes. Thanks to the project the population has raised to over 100 inhabitants.

Spring in this village is amazing when the wild flowers are in bloom in the Gran Sasso National Park. The summer months are hot and dry between June to September, temperatures start to cool then from October. The winter months bring snow for possible winter activities, mainly from December to February.

I admire the passion of the owner to resurrect this medieval hill town recently affected by the 2009 earthquake in the region. However, it is an overwhelming amount of bracing holding it together. Even the tower was destroyed. On the hospitality front, it leaves a bit to be desired. I asked for the bus schedule for 3 days and never received it. Nor was I informed that electricity would be turned off for an entire day...the rest of the town seemed to know that already. Finally, I would recommend it if you have a car. Going by bus to the city was dicey and there are two different bus lines that get you there. The best restaurant is not the hotel's but one called Il Ristoro degli Elfi. This is a place for those who like an adventure in between the larger cities of Italy.
