We stayed at Hotel Alex for 3 days. The room was adequate in size and was of a typical size for a hotel room in Rome, since all rooms are a bit small. The bed was average as far as comfort is concerned. The shower was very small and the water temperature fluctuated between hot and ice cold. The hotel staff (the man in particular) was a bit cold and somewhat rude, seeming to have little patience. The breakfast was quite poor compared to hotels we stayed at in Florence and Venice. Breakfast consisted of a piece of bread and a croissant that we had to share. This was served on a single plate, so one of us had to do without a plate. A cup of tea or coffee for each of us was served with the meal. However, if you want a second cup, prepare to pay extra for it. The orange juice wasn't fresh, natural orange juice, but powdered and it didn't taste very good. The hotel couldn't accept credit card payment for the bill which we found a bit annoying since we had to leave the hotel and go to the train station to get a cash advance on our credit card to pay the bill. If all you want is a place to lay your head at night and have no intention of spending any of your waking hours in the hotel this accomodation is more than adequate. However, this hotel will definitely not be one of the highlights of your visit to Rome.

The hotel is in a nice area, very close to Termini station and therefore to transportation connections to everywhere, but at the same time in a quiet place. The rooms are relatively large, but not recently painted and not extremely clean. They have AC, which is great. The LCD is small, not like in the photos. We enjoyed our stay especially because people did not stay the entire time in the room nextby, otherwise it would have been uncomfortable since the rooms are not soundproof. The shower place is very, very small, not recommended for larger people and the elevator also very small, not recomm for people travelling with lots of luggage. The place has no lobby, but it wasn't a problem for us, as we came every night late and went straight to bed.

Good points: The room was extremely clean. The receptionist was very helpful, even though her English was limited. However, we WERE in Italy, not the US. The location was very handy to the Termini train station, from where you can get just about anyplace you want. Less than good: Although there is an elevator up to the reception, not mentioned is that you'll lug heavy luggage up half a dozen steps to get to the extremely tiny elevator. & No English tv or subtitles in room.

The staff member on duty when I arrived was competent and helpful. When I checked out, the staff member was neither of these. He apparently did not know how to use the credit card machine, and after fumbling with the machine, told me that he could not accept the card. I knew that I was not near my credit limit (and I later confirmed that the credit card company did not decline any attempted charge at the date and time the staff member refused my card). I paid cash (2X50 euros for a 90 euro hotel bill) and the staff member complained that I did not have exact change (he left the hotel to get change). Given the circumstances of this eventually lengthy transaction--0700 on a Sunday morning of my departure from FCO--I found it extremely inconvenient and uncomfortable. I could never return to the Alex Hotel on account of the memory of this experience.
