History and Le Dodici Lune (The Twelve Moons)

Located in the heart of Matera’s “Sassi” (“the stones”), Le Dodici Lune is the perfect place from which to absorb evocative scenery which takes you back 10,000 years in time. So much so, that Matera’s Sassi and park of the rupestrian churches are listed by Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) as world heritage. Unesco describes them as “the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region …. . The first inhabited zone dates from the Palaeolithic, while later settlements illustrate a number of significant stages in human history. Some experts consider Matera to be the oldest city in the world.

Le Dodici Lune is located in the “Sasso Caveoso” (south-facing part of the Sassi, structured like a roman amphitheatre with cave dwellings following the valley side), near the ancient wall that surrounded the city during the 6th century Longobardo rule, under which the underground constructions, originally defined as cave-houses, appeared.

it`s difficult to find and it would help, if there would be a exactly description or a good map at the web-side of the hotel to find the parking place. It`s a wunderful location and I would go there every time again.

The Residenza le Dodici Lune was a very good choice and can be recommended. The room(Nr.3,upstairs) was very spacious, also the bathroom, about 60qm. Nice and cool, since it was very hot outside. We loved the idea of staying in a "4-Star-Cave". All you see in the pictures is what you get, no more, no less. There was also always some free water in the fridge. It is true you have to get up some stairs to reach the hotel, but for us(50's)it was no problem at all. The steps are wide and the whole old town is made of these rocky stairs and walkways. It was two flights up from the parking to the hotel, we found a spot right before the bigger parking place and didn't move our car for the whole time beeing there. Put on some comfortable shoes and you good to go. The breakfast was for sweet tooths only, with homemade cakes and pies, but very good. One evening we had the 'Tourist-Menu' and it included the antipasto, primo and secundo and wine and water with free refill. It was 20Euro, 15Euro without the antipasti. The price was right and the food was very good (loved the Matera bread). The bed was comfortable but very squeaky and the shower head should be replaced. Other then that we were very happy with the hotel and we always would go back. When you have a room upstairs, as soon as you open the door you can see the historical caves on the other side, they even can be reached by car. Also dont miss out on the museum of modern art which is right around the corner. You will be surprised of all the art pieces you get to see in the caves of the museum. A must see also is the Storica casa Grotta, to see what a peasant dwelling looked like, all furnitured, before the people had to move. In the evening it is nice to stroll around old town, sit outside, have dinner or a drink. All around town you have a amazing view, and the hotel was just in the right place for everything. Matera is a must see and we are glad we came to this beautiful town.

This is a wonderful place to stay in theSassi and if you come to Matera you really must stay in the Sassi to gain any lasting appreciation of place. The cost of a double room was more than reasonable @€75 and much less than the other hotels along the only car accessible road. Mind you, the 70meter walk from the parking areas to the hotel should not be undertaken by a woman in high heels who is not accustomed to carrying herself up many flights of cobble-stoned stairs! I am 64 and made it but did thank the Lord the stones were not slick with rain. The reception, breakfast and the room were all of top quality and I have enjoyed a range of hotels around the world. I would highly recommend this hotel with just one hint. Try not to bring a large suitcase that needs to accompany you on the climb! There were main floor rooms available should age or stage seem to be An impediment to the final climb to the upper rooms which offer fantastic views. I will be back to enjoy this hotel again.

What a wonderful find, really spectacular! Not for the faint hearted and weak limbed. The car park is some 70m down hill on slippey steps, just take what luggage you need, but both the restaurant and hotel worth the climb. Just magical!
