Castle Lodge Guest House - Hookwood, Horley

Be very careful if you plan on using their free ride to the airport!! The hotel is okay, not great. The rooms are a little dingy and there is a steep staircase with 70s carpet on it. Our bathroom floor seemed unstable. The breakfast was very sparse. The couple running it seemed very nice but when it came time to take us to the airport (our reason for picking this hotel) our ordeal began. The first car wouldn't work so we had to switch to another. Neither car held more than four passengers at a time so the woman took three of our family first and dropped us the airport and picked up new guests. She told me to stay right there and she would be back with the rest of our party. The trip took 5 minutes max. Well we waited and waited. I assumed there must have been car problems again since the second car had seemed a little unsteady also. After 40 minutes I began to wonder if there had been an accident and decided to call. Our phones had been turned off since our cell phone company charges $15 per minute for calls in England. I tried calling my husband's phone but did not get an answer so I left a message and sent a text. (As it turned out the messages didn't arrive until later that evening). I then called the hotel and she told me that there was only one place to drop people (at bus stop 12) and that the rest of our family must be there. I told her that was where we were and that I hadn't budged since she dropped me off and that they were not there. I stayed with our stuff while my older son (21) continued to search for the rest of our family. Finally the hotel owner called back and said that her husband had dropped off the rest of our party at a different location. We continued to search and eventually found our family but had to run to catch our flight without the lunch we had planned to have. What I find most amazing about this is that I have never received as much as an email apologizing for the mix up, let alone an offer to reimburse us for our phone calls.

My husband and I had a one night stopover at Gatwick and really hit a winner with the Castle Lodge Guest House. Even though we arrived at 11pm the hotel had given us details of the FREE taxi to call and the access code to the guest house so that we could let ourselves in. We were really surprised at the facilities offered for the price we paid and had not expected such good service. The room was spacious and provided a kettle and coffee,tea etc for a refreshing drink. Bathroom looked new and was very clean with nice bath/shower and tons of really hot water. breakfast was great with self serve continental buffet. There was a fridge in the cute breakfast room with fresh milk and a selection joghurts. Various cereals,preserves,breads and even marmite and peanut butter. The English crumpets were also a real treat. The hosts Paul and Judy were soooo hospitable and we even got a free ride back to the airport the next day also. Judy recommended a few of the charity shops and we just loved it. We ended up purchasing an extra holdall to carry all of the STUFF we bought back to Canada.

The hotel is absolutely perfect. The owners were very welcoming and accommodating. We were picked up from the train station, and dropped off at the airport the next day by the staff/owners. The room was very spacious for Europe standards and the garden outside our room was lovely and accessible by all. I would highly recommend the hotel for all.

Very kindness staff, excellent service

We were very impressed with the hotel and the staff. We used the transfer facility which was great. Breakfast was there when you wanted it. We had room 6 which has a beautiful brass 4 poster bed. Local shops 2 min walk away, we will use this hotel again with no doubt

Pick-up and drop-off service was great and free. We had a plain but serviceable room at the back so it was very quiet. Breakfast was a basic self-serve continental. Several pubs and a small town were within a few minutes walk. The hallways and yard need work but for a reasonably priced stop-over for Gatwick I would stay again.

I am reluctant to write a review as my stay was so good that I don't really want other people to choose this guest house. Room was spotlessly clean, welcome instructions were clear and easy to follow, guest house is very close to airport but did not hear any 'planes, breakfast was great and took me less than 5 minutes to return to the airport. I feel like i should stay longer in Castle Lodge.

We had to fly into Gatwick the night before we left for the states. The hotel is 5min from the airport. They made arrangements for us to be picked up at 0100am and took us to the airport in the morning. Very lovely facilities and the breakfast was also good. Would definitely return as a home base in the future.
