Firstly upon arrival had to phone the pub to get service from a untrained member of staff who couldnt answer questions eventually a more senior member of staff arrived. Enquired and purchased late checkout (12pm rather than 10am) for an extra £10 making the total £45. We were directed (inncorrectly) to our rooms which we eventually found no helps to incorrect signage around the hotel. Upon entering the room we discovered our 'standard double' was in fact a twin room. It was late and we could not be bothered to go and wait for the staff to sort out our quiery so i pused the two beds together; i might add the beds, despite being two singles not a double, were incredibly good quality and comfortable. The only redeaming feature of the spacious but souless and grubby room. The bathroom was poorly maintained with cracks between tiles limescale covering the shower head and taps and grime around the corners and edges of the sink, toilet and bath. However the worst problem was not the poor workmanship, it was not the death rattle of the bathroom fan (which thankfully had a switch that worked!) it was the toilet itself. Whoever plumbed the unit in was clearly clueless. The flush was constantly on so as the tank filled it dribbled (noisily) into the bowel not only making an irritating noise but preventing the tank from filling and the flush from being anything near effective. I was force to turn the stoptap on the unit to stop the trickling sound during the night. For the price £35 i would expect the stains on th walls we were greeted by. I could even excuse both bedside lamps bulbs to be blown so relying on the main light. However the bathroom was unexceptable. When not being disterbed by the noisey toilet it was the floorboards from the room above which seemed to creak upon application of the slightest pressure. The icing on the dank and depressing cake for me was despite the night before, upon checking in purchasing the late check in (just under a third of the fri

The Highwayman Hotel is good value for money and the rooms were comfortable and clean although very basic. The rooms could do with refurbishment, particularly the bathrooms which were in a poor state, although functioning. Tiles off the wall, door which did't close properly and overall just tired looking. Having said that, for the price it was just as you would expect. The staff are courteous and very helpful and the food in the adjoining restaurant was good quality and very reasonably priced. Overall it was a pleasant stay, comfortable and good value for money.
