Howard Johnson Inn Jamaica JFK Airport NY - Jamaica, New York

The shuttle driver for pickup was not friendly nor provided good service. He loaded the luggage and jumped in the front of the van. I was standing waiting for him to open the door as that is what I was used to. He basically sat in the van and when he noticed I was not getting in, he beckoned for me to open the door. I stood there and after a while realized I had better open the door myself if I wanted to be transported to the hotel. No service here. The person who checked me in was very efficient and polite. The room was definitely small but for one night and price, I suppose acceptable. HOwever, the carpet in the hall was musty, smoke filled the air. My room was marked non smoking but the walk through the halls was not smoke free. I am allergic to cigarette smoke or residual cigarette smoke. I tried to see if I was on a floor with a mix of rooms but did not have time to confirm. My safe box got stuck and the phone initially did not work. They were very responsive when I called for help. On check out, it appeared while I did indicate I would be leaving at 5a.m,the shuttle driver was late. He was much more pleasant this go around. He still did not open shuttle door but since he was much more pleasant, I did tip on the way out. Lastly, my toilet seat cover was permanently etched into the granite sink top. I could not close the toilet seat cover. I DO NOT keep my toilet seat cover up at home as I practice feng shui. Plus as a female with jewelry, contacts, phone etc. I don't keep my toilet seat cover up for fear of dropping things in the toilet. That was the most disconcerting thing of the stay. I had to cover with a towel. Hotel is closely located to JFK which is a plus. Price for room was competitive with other hotels in the area. However, the service and carpet in facility can be improved. I would only return to this property if there were no other options. I would only recommend as a last resort.
