The location was prime, the room was not to big but comfortable. the surrounding area was safe enough for a tour at night and the hotel staff was efficient and friendly. overall, an A rating for Rothaus.

We checked in and checked out within two hours. It was clean and secure, and felt like a prison. This is not a hotel for middle aged conservative couples. It is in the heart of the Red Light District of Zurich (the new Amsterdam). If you have tattoos, body piercing and/or dreadlocks and seeking erotica you should be ok with the Rothaus. Some ratings provided by me have a neutral value to be fair to the staff because of our brief visit.

Very welcoming and helpful staff with very pleasant rooms on both our nights stayed. The room was very good size and air conditioning on prior to our arrival. A very pleasant stay although surrounding area surpisingly dodgy.

Was a great little place to stay. the rooms were excellent - clean and spacious. our taxi driver said the hotel was located 'in the rougher side of town' and were a little hesitant but felt completely safe walking around - we didnt come across any trouble. close enough walk to the station and centre of town.

The property, which seems to be situated quite close to the red light district - what there is of it, has a bar and breakfast room on the ground floor with the reception office. There is a lift to the 2nd and 4th floors and from the latter you go down about 6 steps to the third floor. Our triple room was clean, quiet with the window shut and comfortable if a little stark, no pictures on the walls, and the en-suite bathroom adequate. Although it is a B & B, breakfast is actually extra and is of course continental but tea was available made with loose tea in a filter and boiling water. The coffee was excellent. Overall it was perfectly acceptable.

Hotel staff is good. But the hotel facility is really poor and it is very noisy at night, probably because it is close to the bar area. Also can see some strange people around. Definitely not value for money.

The hotel room was basic but clean. The location of the elevator was inconvenient & I had to drag my huge suitcase up & down the stairs quite often. The staff was friendly & available 24 hours to answer any questions. Everyone spoke pretty good English as well. This hotel is located in the "Red Light District" so the location was interesting. There were plenty of eating places nearby including a small grocery store which was VERY convenient. The location is only a few blocks from the train station so it was easy to get to other places. This hotel is great for a 1-2 night stay. I don't believe it accommodates for a long period stay because it doesn't necessarily have the expected "conveniences" of a 4 or 5 star hotel. Side note: I loved the bedding here!

The hotel is situated in the red light district but it is a normal hotel. The pricing is OK for Zurich. If you close the windows it is not loud during the night. No air condition - might be a problem in summer...

The staff at the hostel were fantastic - we had to change our travel plans unexpectedly and they allowed a refund of our paid room rates. They went above and beyond helpful and even loaned us umbrellas when needed. The location is a bit far away from the centee of Zurich but I would stay here again.

As a customer I am very dissapointed with this hotel. The neighbordhood was horible, lot of prostitutes around and dance clubs. This is not a good hotel at all, i felt not safe, and the hotel receptionist wasn't paying any attention to who was entering the property, i would not recommend this hotel to anybody.

Value for money, 10 min walk from the main railway station, Doesnot have AC so need to keep the window open. No place inside the shower to keep shampoo or any other toileteries. In all its a good place just for sleeping as its spaciosu compared to rest of Europe. Location is very bad as too many hookers & druggies in front of the hotel. Feels a little unsafe while entering as i was there with my wife.

The hotel is about 4 tram stops from Zurich main railroad station. It is easy to go to the shopping and central area of the city for all kinds of activities. Some ants found their way into my room. So the staff changed a room for me free of ants. It is quite noise outside, partially because of the worldcup football championship.

Unfortunately I was pasing through on business - wished I didn't have to be up early the next day. I coundn't imagine a better place for a young party animal to use as a base to see Zurich. Clean and, considering the price, almost boutique. The bar and staff are great. For anyone from the UK, it is very Soho. Pretty full-on location for Zurich, seemingly in the middle of the bars, clubs and some... But the locked compound in the "hinterhof" makes it all feel really safe and surprisingly quiet. From other write-ups I was expecting some seedy ex-brothel where you would get mugged en-route. Nothing of the sort. Full-on, great fun, whilst being safe, friendly and clean.

The immediate area surrounding the hotel is edgy, to put it mildly. Our hotel room faced the street. We were staying here on a saturday night, and the noise continued well into the early morning. The rooms are excellent - clean, well designed. Facilities and staff-wise, my only complaint would be the bizarre design where there's an elevator only on every other floor making hauling luggage a bit of a hassle. Good for a quick stopover en route elsewhere.

Yes, this hotel was in the red light district but we had a great stay here. It was cheaper than any hotel in Zurich and yes, was a bit out of the way (hardly though) but totally worth it. We were lucky and got a room on the inside of the building so we weren't facing out onto the busy, loud street, but in toward the alley and other buildings and it was perfectly quiet at night. I had read in other reviews that it is loud on street side. Just request an alley side room.

My first stay in Zurich and Hotel Rothaus is one of the hidden gems that gives you a good price for rooms. It may get a bit noisy at night, depending on which room you're given (rooms facing the main street has drunk pedestrians talking loudly), but you can close the windows to shut out the noise. Surrounding area seems shady, but we didn't feel threatened in anyway. Distance to Zurich train station and town centre is but a few bus stops away (5mins; see photos to find the bus stop at train station, to hop on bus 31, to reach the militar-langstrasse stop). Moreover, the bus stop is less than a min's walk away! 8) Nice clean room topped it all for a recommendation by us. Cheers!

Location was not so exciting as we expected after reading other comments about this hotel. Our route to the center went thru Lager strasse - and then we did not event notice the red light district. You should avoid this hotel on hot summer days - there is no cooling.

The thing about this hotel was the staff, they were excellent, they went out their way to help and made you feel very comfortable. The rooms were strange and modern but clean. At the end of the day you just want somewhere to sleep. Good location for getting around, easy for the tram and get to the shopping areas and station. Although the location is in the red light area, it is very safe and not a thing to worry about. The Internet was cheap, only 5 Swiss florins for 1 week. Highly recomended.

We chose the hotel for it's cheaper price in the area we were passing through on our way back to Italy. As the nightlife in the area is particularly active, to say the least, there was a lot of excited crowd noise all night which made it difficult to get any decent sleep. I imagine that it's not always like that around the hotel but it makes me hesitate to return. However, the rooms are very clean and spacious, and the beds are roomy!

Rooms can suffer from noice also if they are situated in the more quiet backyard, especially from late coming vistors in the rooms nearby. Rooms small but that is OK for me and very clean, which is important. The red light district in Zurich where the hotel is situated looks more dangerous than it is and I had the best thai food in Europe in a restaurant nearby. Staff extremely competent and helpful. I will definitely return.

In November 2008 my wife, 23-year old daughter and I stayed 3 nights in a triple room at the Rothaus Hotel. This hotel is easy to find, but it’s a 20-minute walk from the train station (if you walk fast with your luggage). So we took bus number 35 from the bus stop outside the train station to a bus stop very close to this hotel. The neighborhood is somewhat seedy, but we never felt threatened. There are a few small restaurants in this area. My wife and I stayed here in a double room in November 2007 (see my review in venere.com), so we were apprehensive about staying here again. However, it was the best value available in Zurich, and we were very pleasantly surprised this time by our triple room. Our room had two large, comfortable beds, adequate lighting and heating, and a mini-safe. The bathroom had a shower with hot water and its size was adequate. Breakfast was not included, but a small, cozy, restaurant is attached to the hotel, and can be accessed from inside the hotel. The restaurant had a small and large buffet breakfast. The large buffet breakfast cost 15 Swiss Francs and was very good, but there was not a large selection of food.

Very neat, rooms quite big... nice atmosphere inside and also outside (indeed a busy area, beautiful woman in the streets, lot of activity in the streets, shops, snacks, but no security issue at all). Professional and helpful people, very good breakfast (take the large one, it's worth the price). Will get back.

Highly recommended! All in all, a very pleasant, comfortable and good quality hotel. Good breakfast too and flexible in price since you can add items to the basic price for continental as you like. A small inconvenience which is general to Switzerland in winter: the combination of heating and quilt... it is rather hot and uncomfortable because there is no choice, except to get the quilt out of the cover and use only the cover! There were no wardrobes or storage space in the room, only one large flat surface. No problem with hanging clothes (very creative) but would be a problem if you have kids.

Hotel Rothaus has an easy access(actually it is a 20mins brisk walk to there) to the central train station, which is the gate to the most famous shopping distrist in Zurich, bahnhoffstrasse. At night, the neighborhood can be bustling with people, since there is one coffee shop(bar, more likely, i forgot) just beside the hotels. Although the hotel is situated near the red light district, but it is pretty safe at night. The hotel is clean, although the room doesn't have very much a decoration, I would say it is the style of the hotel. The wall is painted purple(in my room), with three single beds, a tv set on a desk in front of them, and rows of cabinet beside the Tv set. From most of the review, you can say the room is very empty, although what I would like to say is that the hotel doesn't bother with standard ornaments like paintings or wallpaper or even sofa set. If you can live with it, this hotel is quite a steal. They even provide free croissants or fruits just beside the receptionists(always halfway empty, though). The staffs are very friendly, although the hotel doesn't have aircon. So bear with them in summer.

The hotel was spartan, but very clean and comfortable. It was a quite a long walk from the train station. The easiest way to get there is take the 31 bus from outside the train station and get off at the fifth stop (i can't remember the name of the stop!) The breakfast is 13 Franc, sorta expensive for the amount one is paying for the hotel, but at least they have one! The bar/coffee bar is really nice to have. The hotel is in the red-light district, so it is strange but really interesting. Not for everyone, but very safe.

As many other reviews indicated, this hotel is not in the best part of town. However, being a single guy it did not bother me that I was in the red light district of Zurich. In fact I have seen a lot worse neighborhoods, and it was only by reading other reviews here that I learned that the hotel was in the red light district (although I never observed any hookers standing on street corners). The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the train station once you know where you are going. The room was small, but adequate. No cupboards to hang up clothes, just hangers on a wall hook. The pillows were terrible -- virtually flat, and I found that very uncomfortable as it felt like I was not sleeping with a pillow. I stayed 2 nights - a Saturday and Sunday night. It was noisy outside on Saturday night at 2am when I went to bed, however I took a sleeping pill to help me ignore the noise. It was not noisy on Sunday night. There was a safe in the room which was convenient. The toilet was situated so close to the wall, that when sitting on it you needed to sit at a 30 degree angle to be comfortable. I would stay there again because it was relatively cheap compared to Zurich standards. I would not recommend this hotel to a mature couple, or to most single femnale travellers, or to families with children.

Hotel Rothaus is a very good hotel with modern spacious rooms. Breakfast is very good. Downside is the neighbourhood; in the middle of the 'redlight district' of Zurich. In November 2007 my wife and I stayed one night at the Rothaus Hotel in Zurich. This hotel is easy to find, but it is a 20-minute walk from the train station. It is better to stop at the tourist information office at the train station and get the details of how to take a bus to this hotel. The bus stops are very close to train the station and this hotel. Busses and street cars in Switzerland do not charge fares to holders of a Swiss Pass. The neighborhood around the hotel is very seedy, and there were no restaurants or shopping in this area. While waiting for a bus we saw the police searching a man on the sidewalk next to the bus stop. At night we could hear the music from a nearby cabaret. Access to the hotel is by ringing a doorbell. The reception area is on the ground floor and has internet service (not free). One corner of the reception area is used to store luggage. The desk clerks were courteous and business like. My first impression of the room was “Oh My God!” The room was painted a dark gray color and had a high ceiling, like a barn. It was very depressing. However, the room was clean and had a small safe and refrigerator. The bed was barely big enough for two persons and not particularly comfortable. There was barely enough heat. The bathroom was very small and not very wide, but there was plenty of hot water for the sink and shower. The only incident was that the maid did not knock on our door, and used her key to enter our room in the morning while we were in bed. Breakfast was not included, but a small, cozy, restaurant is attached to the hotel, and can be accessed from inside the hotel. The restaurant had a small and large buffet breakfast. The large breakfast cost 20 Euros each and was very good, but there was not a large selection of food.

Nice size room. Housekeeping not very good! They only made the bed the first day and did nothing the next day. No phone or clock in room. You can get an alarm clock at the front desk. Location was ok... not a very great area and kind of far from where everything is going on. It is walking distance from just about everything though. Expensive for what it is, but what isn't in Zurich??

I spent 5 nights at this hotel and overall I had a pleasurable experience. It is about the lowest price you'll find for a hotel in Zurich, at the time of my booking price was 139CHF. Rooms are spartan but neat and clean. Reception staff was not present upon arrival but the bartender called them and they arrived shortly. I expected to have to pay advance in cash but they accepted my CC with no questions. Maid service was somewhat less than desirable but I stayed during the week of Christmas and maybe they were not in best of spirits to clean rooms. My room was cleaned only twice and they never made the bed. Staff was very friendly and assisted me with directions and recommended several must things to visit. I really appreciated that. The hotel is located in the red light district and people seem to hang around the corners alot...but no one bothered me. With the only ding being on the maid service during my visit, I would stay again at Rothaus and recommend it to others.

It really is in a great location in the city to all the major attractions. The stay was great here and provided great instructions on how to get around, though they are not really versed in how to get to the hotel by car. The neighborhood though leaves much to be desired. The first night I was at the hotel, I went out to look for a place to eat and was surprised at the number of panhandlers, prostitutes and druggies I saw. It is a working class neighborhood though. I would stay here again, albiet without a car

Our stay at Rothaus was great. The updated rooms are very nice, simple, modern, clean. Bathroom was clean. I would have preferred to have a telephone in the room. I appreciated having our own safe in the room. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. This was a great hotel and the price was very reasonable.
