On Check in the member of staff was very unfriendly. The room was a clean - but in need of modernisation - even new bed spreads and towels would of made a difference. It was like being back in the 70's, which is a pity because the hotel entrance is magnificent and promises a lot only to be let down by the room. The hotel is a short walk to the town centre - which is great. We had a fire alarm go off at 0330 hours - which cannot be helped - but an apology and conplimentary breakfast would be a nice gesture ( as used to be the case when I worked in hotels). This hotel could be a lot more - but just not having a bit of money invested in it has let it down.

Stunning public areas - well restored/maintained The room was another matter - I knew I was getting a single room - but it was very tiny and there was no heating in the bathroom. I would return but go as a couple and book a double next time

Nice enough hotel, but there was no hot water for a morning shower in the annex rooms we were assigned. Which is pretty poor for the money charged. Didn't metter so much for a football fan staying over on a Saturday night, but wouldn't do for a business traveller.

Large old hotel in need of refurbishing. Welcome professional but distant. Room OK (but curtains torn); electrical problem solved immediately by staff. Easy car park.

This hotel is in a great location about 10 mins walk from the city centre. The room we were offered was well presented, clean and tidy. However, it was HOT. The radiator was stuck in the on position and could not be turned off. Hotel staff were unable to help except to move us to a different room, where the radiator was stuck in the off position! It was a cold night.

The hotel is in good distance with the city centre. It is excellent for short visit, as it meets all my basic (minimum) requirements. The only draw back for me was the maintance work that was carried out in a commumial hall way with no warning signs or barrier.

I had booked 2 twin rooms, but only one had been reserved. After a great deal of debate we were given one twin and a family room (which was in another building). On leaving, the receptionist tried to charge me double the amount on my booking form from Venere, they had clearly misunderstood the booking form. The hotel had been decorated in dark, unattractive designs and colours and the overall ambience was depressing, which is a pity since the building is a lovely old property with many attractive features.

A very nice hotel but our bedroom was small but adequate and the toilet/shower very clean. The hotel seems to cater to a lot of bus parties - nothing wrong with that but it made the service for dinner a little slow if you're not with a party. Also the food was a bit disappointing, in that my main course of salmon was smothered in sauce as was the lamb. The standard I would expect of a canteen although the vegetables were very nicely cooked.

Had one of the courtyard rooms out the back - more modern and possibly quieter than the main building, with car parking also. Very nice.

The breakfast was comparitively poor, with lackadaisical service. A large coach party took all the service, leaving independent guests a very poor relation

The hotel has retained many of its original features as confirmed by several original photos on display. Wainscoat panelling, galleried landing large fireplaces. Room very large and clean. Hotel close to York centre. Very good throughly recommended.

When we arrived it transpired that the hotel had made a mistake with our booking and had booked a double and a twin room instead of a twin and a family. However, the staff were very apologetic and went out of their way to apologise and to compensate us for the inconvenience. It was eventually possible to squeeze a Z-bed into the double room, and they upgraded us from room only to B&B, and also threw in dinner in the restaurant. We were impressed by the way they handled the mistake and fel that the compensation offered was very fair.

The room was adequate & tidy although could do with refurbishment, especially the cramped en-suite bathroom. Parking was advertised as included in the price, however upon arriving we were notified that parking was very limited & if all spaces were taken the only alternative was a pay car park off site.

The breakfast buffet was packed away on our arrival to the dining room (which was half an hour before breakfast was due to end), hardly giving us a chance to help ourselves to anything. This is far from hospitable. The room was very small. The reception area and common areas were pleasant. Overall, an average stay.

I was surprised with the reception, because they asked us to pay in advance. They didn´t have places to keep the luggages in case of travelling later, althoug this is possible in the train station.

This hotel was filthy. Years of grime had built up in the rooms and bathrooms in particular. It was probably a lovely hotel 20 years ago but has not been looked after. Cleaners don't do a very good job. Asked that the teapot be washed and it came back in exactly the same state that I sent it in. I had to scrape the grime from it before using it!! Rooms are noisy and we were led to believe from your website that breakfast was included which it wasn't so I would like some form of compensation as we then had to pay extra to have breakfast. I wouldn't recommend the hotel to anyone else, apart from recommending that they find somewhere else!!

Decent hotel, has more character than most. Is a 10-15 minute walk from most of tourist-York, but in good weather, it's mostly a nice walk. About £3.50 taxi ride from the train station, so easy to get to. No left luggage service, which is very inconvenient...we had to pay £8 at the train station for two bags, as checkout is at 11am and out train was not until 4pm. Rooms are no better or worse than you would expect in any hotel that's reasonably old, clean enough, but beds not the best we've alept on.
