Hotel room very dirty and dark. Dining room was dirty and tired, Staff were unwelcoming and not very professional, except the receptionist on arrival who was very friendly and helpful but that is where it ends. We were able to clearly hear the conversation of the couple in the room next to us. The room was small and unkempt with dirt carpets and walls and the windows full of condensation. All in all yuk

I chose the Elmbank Hotel because of its proximity to the train station and also because it was outside the City Walls so it would be quieter. The hotel itself is full of character, being in the Art Neuveau style of decoration, with some wonderful examples of this art to be found all around the public areas. The staff were all very nice and friendly, the food was excellent, as was the service. All in all I would recommend this hotel to anyone who likes their accommodation to have lots of charm and character.

As described on website. Rooms would benefit from 'lick of paint' as a bit tired and dated but that aside room was very clean and comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful. Never ate in hotel so unable to comment but served the purpose that I needed it for.

on first impressions we both thought the hotel was a bit dated,as was the creaky floor boards in the room, but barring them the place was very comfortable and cosy. the staff were very helpful and friendly and the banter between us was superb.... well done the staff !!!!!!

We really enjoyed our stay at Elmbank. The service was good, staff polite and friendly, and the food was really excellent. The only problem was the folk in the next room who had their friends in and had obviously forgotten there were other people staying there.Their talking and laughter went on rather too long on all three nights we were there, and started late. However, that was not the fault of the hotel and we could have asked them to be quiet! Otherwise... we would certainly stay there again. Excellent value for money.

The Reception staff were very welcoming on arrival and gave us alternative parking area. I cannot remember seeing that there were a lot of stairs to climb up to the rooms but for people with mobility problems it would be difficult. The decoration of the room was dated, the false door gave a deceptive appearance, and the proper door was hard to open. The curtains were too short for the window letting in a lot of morning light. No double glazing or secondary glazing made outside noise penetrate the room. The walls adjoining the next room are paper thin, and we could hear every conversation they had and I assume they could hear us. The bathroom is well appointed although the shower cubicle is not meant for "larger people". Limited alcohol available in the bar, bar area small but there is a lounge with soft furnishings. The evening meal was amazing, very reasonably priced and very professional waiter. Good choices at Breakfast, various cereal and hot food.

The Hotel was a disappointment with poor customer service ( no-one on reception on arrival ) Given the room key , no advice re facilities. No indication on dining / breakfast facilities all in all a poor 1st impression. Hotel in a fabulous building which is now run down and poorly maintained and as far as we experienced , not managed at all. The room rate was fine but sadly in the end not worth it.

On Check in the member of staff was very unfriendly. The room was a clean - but in need of modernisation - even new bed spreads and towels would of made a difference. It was like being back in the 70's, which is a pity because the hotel entrance is magnificent and promises a lot only to be let down by the room. The hotel is a short walk to the town centre - which is great. We had a fire alarm go off at 0330 hours - which cannot be helped - but an apology and conplimentary breakfast would be a nice gesture ( as used to be the case when I worked in hotels). This hotel could be a lot more - but just not having a bit of money invested in it has let it down.

Nice enough hotel, but there was no hot water for a morning shower in the annex rooms we were assigned. Which is pretty poor for the money charged. Didn't metter so much for a football fan staying over on a Saturday night, but wouldn't do for a business traveller.

This hotel is in a great location about 10 mins walk from the city centre. The room we were offered was well presented, clean and tidy. However, it was HOT. The radiator was stuck in the on position and could not be turned off. Hotel staff were unable to help except to move us to a different room, where the radiator was stuck in the off position! It was a cold night.

The hotel is in good distance with the city centre. It is excellent for short visit, as it meets all my basic (minimum) requirements. The only draw back for me was the maintance work that was carried out in a commumial hall way with no warning signs or barrier.

I had booked 2 twin rooms, but only one had been reserved. After a great deal of debate we were given one twin and a family room (which was in another building). On leaving, the receptionist tried to charge me double the amount on my booking form from Venere, they had clearly misunderstood the booking form. The hotel had been decorated in dark, unattractive designs and colours and the overall ambience was depressing, which is a pity since the building is a lovely old property with many attractive features.

A very nice hotel but our bedroom was small but adequate and the toilet/shower very clean. The hotel seems to cater to a lot of bus parties - nothing wrong with that but it made the service for dinner a little slow if you're not with a party. Also the food was a bit disappointing, in that my main course of salmon was smothered in sauce as was the lamb. The standard I would expect of a canteen although the vegetables were very nicely cooked.

When we arrived it transpired that the hotel had made a mistake with our booking and had booked a double and a twin room instead of a twin and a family. However, the staff were very apologetic and went out of their way to apologise and to compensate us for the inconvenience. It was eventually possible to squeeze a Z-bed into the double room, and they upgraded us from room only to B&B, and also threw in dinner in the restaurant. We were impressed by the way they handled the mistake and fel that the compensation offered was very fair.

The room was adequate & tidy although could do with refurbishment, especially the cramped en-suite bathroom. Parking was advertised as included in the price, however upon arriving we were notified that parking was very limited & if all spaces were taken the only alternative was a pay car park off site.

The breakfast buffet was packed away on our arrival to the dining room (which was half an hour before breakfast was due to end), hardly giving us a chance to help ourselves to anything. This is far from hospitable. The room was very small. The reception area and common areas were pleasant. Overall, an average stay.

I was surprised with the reception, because they asked us to pay in advance. They didn´t have places to keep the luggages in case of travelling later, althoug this is possible in the train station.

This hotel was filthy. Years of grime had built up in the rooms and bathrooms in particular. It was probably a lovely hotel 20 years ago but has not been looked after. Cleaners don't do a very good job. Asked that the teapot be washed and it came back in exactly the same state that I sent it in. I had to scrape the grime from it before using it!! Rooms are noisy and we were led to believe from your website that breakfast was included which it wasn't so I would like some form of compensation as we then had to pay extra to have breakfast. I wouldn't recommend the hotel to anyone else, apart from recommending that they find somewhere else!!

Decent hotel, has more character than most. Is a 10-15 minute walk from most of tourist-York, but in good weather, it's mostly a nice walk. About £3.50 taxi ride from the train station, so easy to get to. No left luggage service, which is very inconvenient...we had to pay £8 at the train station for two bags, as checkout is at 11am and out train was not until 4pm. Rooms are no better or worse than you would expect in any hotel that's reasonably old, clean enough, but beds not the best we've alept on.
