Very nice, helpful people, who run a lovely little hotel, in a tastefully restored villa. Breakfast was very good -- much better than the usual Italian hotel breakfast. My room was perfectly quiet. Excellent value. Strongly recommended, but keep a careful watch for the hotel sign, which is easy to miss as you drive past.

Property just outside one of the gates of Volterra. You can walk from the hotel to old part of Volterra in about 5-10 minutes through stairs going up to one of the city gates. It is a relatively easy climb. The villa is good for 1 or 2 nights, but lacks facilities for a longer stay. This gives you sufficient time to visit Volterra.

Very well situated just 50 meters from the Porta all' Arco gateway to the town. The access to the centre is very easy but as with all hill towns it requires a steady walk up a steep hill for 100 metres. Parking is free but limited (should be adequate spaces under normal conditions. The couple who run the hotel are friendly and try very hard to ensure that their guests stay is a happy experience. Value for money has to be seen in context of the location ie proximity to Volterra and the higher prices in Tuscany in general.

we loved loved loved our stay here! the property is so lovely, so romantic and the staff was beautiful: warm & generous & happy & helpful. although our room was very quiet and felt remote, you do have to cross a fairly busy thoroughfare to venture into town - this posed no problem for us but, slower walkers, be careful & beware

This is a lovely little hotel and the sisters who run it are friendly and very very accommodating. Good breakfast. It is down the hill from the center of town so mostly quiet, except for the main street right outside that goes in and out of Volterra. Rooms on back side of hotel would be a little quieter. But I would definitely stay here again.

The Villa Porta all'Arco was a really nice surprise and I can really recommend it. + the villa is a nicely renovated old building, our room was spacious with one of two windows overlooking the garden and the countryside + the location with private parking, its a five minute walk up to Volterra. The sea (Cecina Mare) is a 40min drive away. + staff very friendly + breakfast for Italy good choice, fresh bread and cakes, fruits; real Italian coffee from a proper machine you can even chose between coffee types and served in the garden; - the tv didn't work but we didn't even ask why, maybe we didn't operate it right.

We had a five night reservation in Villa Porta all'Arco during a return trip to Tuscany. Our first nights arrival was during a dramatic thunder & lighting storm, with dark skies and wet. We were greeted with warmth and care to our needs immediately, and our room was spacious and comfortable. The following days in Volterra and surroundings were sunny making day adventures, via auto, using this Villa as a base, perfecto. There's no question it's up-hill to the town center (just minutes), but crossing through Porta all'Arco each time and being dazzled by the Etruscan arch was a wonderful entrance to the town. Breakfasts in the hotel or outside on the terrace were very good with a variety unmached by other three star hotels we have stayed in. This is a family run establishment that cares, and we say Bravo! to Antonella, Miranda, and staff.

We absolutely loved this place! On our 4 week European vacation, this was one of our favorite hotels. Our room was quiet, clean, and large (especially for Italy)and had A/C that worked. But what really makes this hotel stand out was the owner, who went above and beyond to take care of us. She had detailed maps of the surroundings, advised us where to find a supermarket and laundry mat, helped us park our car and even gave us alternative directions for our drive to Rome the next day that saved us lots in tolls and time. What a beautiful place, too. Highly recommend!

First, I want to mention that I don't give inflated ratings on such surveys. I truly believe this stay to be a "10." The hotel can not be situated in a better place. It is located just outside the Etruscan Arch/walls of Volterra, easy to find, easy access by car (first time I have driven in Italy). A five minute walk puts you on one of the main streets of Volterra. 2 minute drive gets you to a Co-op and laundry mat. The hotel is very pleasing to the eye and looks like a Victorian type house with gardens, flowers, iron gate in front, trees, patio out back. The inside is well kept, early 1900's, original floors, with modern bathroom. The rooms are good size (my opinion) for my wife myself and my daughter (19 years old) to have a comfortable stay. Our room was a corner room with windows to the front and to the west (I think). The view from these windows was tremendous. The breakfast was just great. Various pastries, salami, fresh bread, (bushetto?), cheese, juice, coffee, fruit. Best of all was the staff. Forgive me for not having the name of the lady who checked us in and took care of us during our visit, but she made us feel at home and like part of her family as soon as we arrived. Everyone was great! We only stayed 2 nights, I wish it was longer and I hope we get the chance to return. Thanks for such an enjoyable and relaxing time!

The staff are very nice here and the breakfast is fairly substantial but the place is quite simply not a 3 star. The first room we were shown at the back of the hotel was very small with 2 twin beds pushed together- not a double-we complained and were changed to a room at the front which was very noisy with traffic. We both got very little sleep with the noise of trucks on the road all through the night. There was no central heating despite the fact that it was very very cold although in fairness the owner did explain that this was because the mayor hadn't authorised this yet for the town! My biggest problem is with the shower system- this works using a water tank which turns cold after 2 minutes- I was left with half washed hair and was then told I had to wait for '5 minutes' until it heated up again. The tank takes around 20-30 minutes to reheat. It is not satisfactory for a 3 star hotel in this day and age to have such a primitive showering system. I was not impressed and expressed my unhappiness when we were checking out. While she did give us some discount, I must say that I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

This was one of our most favorite hotels during our three week stay in Italy. The location was perfect and the hospitality of the innkeeper was impeccable. She was cheerful, offered great recommendations for restaurants and provided us with lots of information regarding the area. She was helpful in all aspects---including stopping the traffic on the main road so we could pull out of the driveway. The breakfast array was, also, one of the best offered throughout our trip. We would definitely return to this hotel and highly recommend it. You can leave your car parked at the hotel while you enjoy the beauty of Volterra....one of the gates to the city is just a few meters away. The view from our spacious and well equipped room was amazing.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and enjoyed every single minute of it. We had a spacious room with a spectacular garden view and found it very clean although there was an occasional insect or two (it has to be expected in a more rural location!). It was overall quiet apart from the noise in the hallway the other tourists would make (we slept late). The staff was very friendly and helpful, but so are most of the residents in Volterra! I would say that the only downside might be the location, it is a 5-10 minute walk to the entrance of the old part of the city, going uphill! There are no elevators either inside the hotel, so expect to lift your luggage for one flight of stairs, which isn't much compared to other hotels we have stayed in Italy. The breakfast should not be missed as it contains delicious home-made pastries. We would recommend this hotel as much as we recommend to anyone to visit Volterra!

We were in Volterra for a celebration with friends. The town was perfect for a short break, beautiful, fascinating, and not to big to absorb. The hotel was just outside the city wall, convenient for walking into to town, but also with a small car park. The room was bright, and airy and the legendary breakfast not a disappointment!

We had a little bit of difficulty finding the hotel, small sign at the side of the road. The hotel is located in a beautiful old townhouse. There was private parking available. It's just a short walk to the old town. Breakfast in the morning was one of the best we had on our trip : fresh rolls, cheese, salami, ham, croissants, yoghurt, fresh home made cakes (several), espresso, fruit juice,.. A pity we couldn't stay longer, Volterra was also a very nice town with a very interesting Etruscan museum !

Three sisters run this hotel and they are very kind and accommodating, proud of their hotel. They serve an excellent continental breakfast. However, they are not always on site, and the reception desk can be closed except mornings and late afternoons for checking in and out. The room was spacious, the bed very comfortable, and the bathroom was large. Unfortunately the hotel fronts on a very busy street with no walkway, and the fast, heavy traffic is hectic, noisy, and franjkly dangerous. The hotel is hard to locate when driving in the rush of heavy traffic, which also impedes ingress and egress. A room at the rear of the hotel is essential to avoid the noise of the traffic.

Stayed here during off season. Room had a phone but was not operational. The television also did not operate as I suspect they do not pay for satellite reception during the slow months. The service was very good, as was the breakfasts. Doors are very thin so it can be quite noisy if you have neighbors. One disturbing discovery was that all room keys appeared to be identical (skeleton keys looked the same on the office wall). As we were the only occupants of the floor during part of our visit I tested this hypothesis on several empty rooms and proved my point. Don't leave anything in the room that you can't afford to loose. Although this hotel is a good value I don't know how it obtained a 3 star rating.

Excellent reception on arrival, although we had to ring and wait for staff to attend as no one lives on site. Drinks provided free on arrival. Nice spacious clean rooms. Excellent breakfast including home made cakes from family who run the establishment. Property is fairly tight to busy main road at front with road noise and not much garden space to rear. As close as you can probably get to town if parking is required, as small parking area in front of premises. I can't say enough good things about this place! Volterra was my favorite stop in our 2 week visit to Italy and this was my favorite hotel. The town feels authentic, not like a show put on for tourists. Yet it is small and you can feel like you really get to know it all, not just see a few tourist spots. We had wonderful interactions with locals who are not yet sick of tourists like some other locations. The staff at the hotel were kind and generous - for example, as we sat near the garden reading one rainy afternoon, they came by and offered to make us some cappucino and brought it with cookies. The villa is decorated nicely in common areas as well as the rooms. Breakfast includes fresh fruit, boiled eggs, meats, and cheeses, and an amazing array of delicious baked goods. We enjoyed sitting in the garden as well as our room. It was the most upscale little hotel we stayed in, but not the most expensive, and I thought it was a very good value. This was our "restful" stop between the dirtier, rougher city of Rome, and the hectic, museum laden Florence. Well worth the extra work to reach this town off the beaten path and the couple of days on our 2 week itinerary. The only possible negative - there is a climb up numerous stairs to get to the portal into the old walled city and the entire town has is up and down with some steep inclines. This is not a place for people with bad knees.

Probably one of the best hotels of our trip. We had a HUGE, spotless room on the first floor, which I believe was the handicapped equipped room. There were probably four other couples/families there, and we didn't hear a peep out of anyone except for when we were all down at breakfast. We arrived early and no one was at reception so my husband did some planning for our evening and I took a nap in the car. When the woman arrived, she was so apologetic, but we were completely fine. She gave us a great rundown of the restaurants and a detailed map with everything circled and highlighted. She was great. Breakfast was fabulous, the best we had on the trip. There were two or three different cakes, a huge fruit spread, yogurts, cereals, sausages, bacon, cheeses, eggs, juices, you name it. They made specialty coffees and continuously kept an eye on refills. The walk from here to town was a bit steep, but do-able. Volterra itself was a terrific town and we absolutely loved it.

I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. The car park though on the small side, could accomodate all our cars, and although on a fairly busy road, our room at the back overlooked the whole valley and was very quiet. The villa is so charming and beautifully presented.Antonella, the owner speaks good English, she is friendly and welcoming, and serves the most wonderful breakfasts. The hotel is situated on the main road up to Volterra, and you walk just a few yards up the road, cross over and up several flights of steps to the old main gate, in all about 5 minutes and you are in the lovely old town. There are masses of resteraunts, and nice shops to browse and buy. We were very happy with our stay.

Villa Porta all'Arco is lovely, our room was very spacious and tasteful. The breakfast was the most comprehensive one we had in Italy. If you don't mind an uphill climb, its not to difficult to get to the town inside the walls which is very charming. The views from the road just outside the walls are beautiful, and we came upon ruins of a Roman theatre by accident.

Piccolo albergo molto tranquillo, facilmente raggiungibile in autovettura, ottimamente posizionato rispetto al centro storico di Volterra,al quale si accede in pochi minuti a piedi. Trattamento molto familiare. Da consigliare agli amici.

Antonella and her staff do an excellent job of maintaining the site, welcoming, and serving a great breakfast. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished. The location of the hotel is excellent, within walking distance of Volterra's sites. The noise in the rooms near the road may bother a light sleeper.

The staff was very nice and helpful: sent an email in advance with the map of the city and the directions to get to the hotel, offered us an umbrella one day because it was raining. The room was very clean and tastefully decorated. The breakfast in the garden was delicious with homemade cakes.

One of our best stays in Italy. The owner (Antionella?) was a very gracious host. Breakfast was excellent, the location was excellent and Voltarre is a fun place to be. Make sure you eat at La Pace. Talk to the owner (a former motorcycle and auto racer). They have great food and the set menu is well worth it. We ate there several times. Bring a big appetite. The hotel was very convenient and the staff went out of their way to make sure that we had everything we needed. I recommend this place to anybody; it is well worth the price.

Agree with other comments about this place. Very good! the highlight was the most helpful lady who runs the hotel - she is fantastic! she helped us in every way, even directed traffic to help us get our car out!! Lovely old building, big rooms, great breakfast. Probabaly the best place we stayed in. Short walk up hill into volterra town. Would definitely return.

The receptionist/manager was SO VERY VERY welcoming and helpful. She was so friendly, she did normal receptionist duties like show you a map and Points of interest but it felt like so much more because she was so darn friendly! We took a day trip at her recommendation to Populonia which was stellar! The walk up to the city center was a STEEP block long walk UP.

The hotel staff was very welcoming on arrival. Parking is close quarters but they are very helpful in getting your car out when you need it. Breakfast is fabulous and lived up to the reviews I read on this site. Breakfast & location are plenty of reason to stay - but the hotel & staff are another.

We had the best breakfast here in all of Italy. All the items were home-made and attractive. The owner was very welcoming. Good place to leave the car and walk to the city. Wonder about the street noise for the rooms facing the road.

Positives are their excellent, varied breakfast with wonderful coffee, the best of our time in Italy, and the outstanding helpfulness of the staff. A disadvantage is that to walk into Volterra, one must cross a very busy roadway and walk a very steep hill. Volterra was certainly worth our visit, but it's only for good walkers.

The staff were excellent and very welcoming. They even tried hard to solve a computing problem bfore directing us to an Internet Cafe. The breakfast was good and served with considerable care and pride. The walk up to Volterra is steep. Directions to the hotel could be better.

We travelled throughout Italy for weeks, and this was by far the nicest place we stayed. Antoinella was very welcoming and helped us with all the questions we had. The rooms were beautiful and very clean. The breakfast was the best that we had in Italy! I would tell everyone to stay here if they visit Volterra. It was an amazing (and affordable) stay.
