Definitely need anti-mosquitoes nets on windows. Very noisy at night. Reception is outside of the building. Wifi is only on reception. Very convenient location, but a little bit challenge to find.

Rooms 10: you'll hear water pipes gurgle water all night long and hot water heater cycling. The bedspread is worn and as the major feature in the room, depressing. Staff knew that hall light was blown--and left it that way. My room had one bulb missing- replaced on request. No window screen-expect mosquitoes to bite. Room was clean and close to San Marco.

Our room was in the second building, opening from the ally, located on the top floor. The room was spaceous and clean, the bathroom was modern, equipped with a bidet, but it was unfinished (ALL the light fixtures were missing, no shelf in bathroom, uncomfortable, overused bed, no wardrobe, no TV, no internet connection). The staff was nice, friendly and professional. If you don't want to spend too much time in the room (other than sleeping), it's fine, but otherwise it's overpriced. If you had the windows opened, you had the option to listen to the airco system of the restaurant, which is about 3 meters away, just opposite your window. Also, the bells of the nearby churches will make themselves heard regularly, so not the most quiet room. Also there's no mosquito net on the windows, so unless you love the little bloodsuckers, keep your windows shut. The most positive attribute of the accommodation is surely the location, literally a street away from St Marco. I recommend it to couples who will spend most of the day in the city and only need a clean room to sleep in. This building is absolutely not suited for families with small children, as there's no storage for babycarts, neither in the hallway, nor in the room, but there's lots of stairs to climb up.

Amazing location only about 2 minute walk to St. Marks. If you plan on taking a shower you really should bring your own because the towels are not high quality. When we arrived there was no one there to check us in and when we left there was also no one there to check us out. The staff seemed absent the entire time. Overall I would only recommend this hotel for the location. We got the quad room which was fine because it fit everyone perfectly. There was two twin beds, a cot(which isnt comfortable AT ALL), and a double bed. The price was expensive but it was carnivale weekend so we expected that. Take the water taxi to get to the hotel do not try and walk it is a 40 min walk from the train station.

Basic apartment near the hotel, (ap. 4 people)nice stay, i would recommend it! excellent position, clean.. Negative: old beds, they block money on your credit card (still blocked now, i payed yesterday), they ask you 2.50 euro as taxes Siamo stati benissimo, lo consiglierei a chiunque.

Staff member was very pleasant, friendly and helpful. Great location and room /bathroom are basic but clean and tidy. No tea/coffee facilities and could do with small touches that would make a huge difference on first appearances. Would use again as location is hard to beat and easy to find and you don't go to Venice to stay in your room

This was our first trip to Venice. We didn't like the hotel very much at all. Mosquitos came in under the door, there was a strange black hair in the bath and reception is non existent. And as is the case for Venice in general the price was far too high for the service offered. It annoyed us that the hotel didn't have wi-fi or any internet access. There was no room , that we knew of, other than our room where we could relax. It feels like Venice takes for granted its tourists.

Perfect location! The hotel is situated very near to the Piazza de Marco and easy to find. Near Vaporetto stop as well. Friendly, english speaking, helpful staff, but main reception in a different building nearby. The rooms were very clean, cleaned every day. Nice size rooms, but quite noisy surroundings. Bring earplugs. We stayed for three nights and only had warm water in the shower one morning. Ok, breakfast at next-door restaurant.

We enjoyed our stay. The hotel was slightly different from the photos and descriptins on this site. It was obviously another part of the hotel as was stated. The staff were very nice and capable and the breakfast offered was good. We would have loved some tea and coffee facilities and better towels. The shower floor did not drain towards the outlet hole so water flooded across the bathroom floor into the bedroom whenever I had a shower; I had to set up a levee bank of rolled up towels to keep the bedroom floor dry. There were no drawers or storage for clothes in the bedroom, only a hanging rod with two coat hangers for each person. There is no free wifi. The Reception is in another building.

I got a serviced apartment for 4 people (2 rooms, 5 beds which can be joined together if you like), one kitchen, one bathroom with shower, toilet and bidet. Agree with everyone here that they use the table cloths as bath towel. Don't really mind though since it served its purpose. The apartment is quiet and secure (3 layers door). Had some small problem with the lock and the key but was resolved quickly. The place is also quite near to San Marco, just a few steps away. The restaurant in front of the hotel (same owner) is okay. Good pizza, capuccino and I even got a 10% reduction for staying at the hotel. Too pity it ran out of Tiramissu by the time I ordered. Services are only ok though cuz they ran away as soon as I ordered, then popped out at the restaurant next door... musta been some connecting doors. One chef walked out of this restaurant turned out to be the chef of the next door one. I got quite an awkward moment there... Overall, a good stay, enjoyable and was far more than what I expected for a budget hotel.

The hotel room was really cute (small but cosy) and we were happy with the service provided. However Do not go to the restaurant that spans both to the right and left of the entrance of the Rio hotel. I never experienced such a bad service in Italy. The staff was unfriendly. The table was not clean. The waitor didn't come back with the change and assumed it to be a tip. The toilettes were really dirty.

We did our chose because of location of Rio hotel, (just around the corner of St. Mark square and steps from vaporetto stop) and we enjoyed our stay there. We've got small, but perfectly clean, very silent room in annex building, on the ground floor, just as we've asked for. No bad surprises, no overcharges. We've got everything we were promised to - airconditioning, minibar, TV, perfectly clean bathroom, special room to leave the luggage. Restaurant was right there, outside of hotel. They have funny towels - of cotton cloth, like table-cloth. But they were shiny white and perfectly clean, so we didn't mind. :) Plus, they dry your skin better then some real but not very natural towels. Minuses - low light and too noisy fan in the bathroom. And the price is a little bit too high for clean and silent, but still simple and modest accomodation.

The best thing about the hotel is the location. It's 5 mins walk from the St Marco Square and above 3 restaurants. The only way to get to the hotel is through small streets so pulling luggage through the crowds and carrying up the stairs was difficult but the stay was pleasant and location was perfect for walking to all the main sites.

THe first room was a health hazard, it was very small with two small beds and a horrible smell of mildew! we complained as soon as we got in, after bringing all the luggage through lots of stairs, we then were offered a second room which was better because it didn't smell te ac worked and it has a queen size bed, however it was at the back of an allyway we had to move all the lugage through another two flights of stairs and no view which was one of the reasons I picked that hotel. The first room should not be rented to no one!!

Having read some adverse comments about this hotel, especially if staying in the two star block, I was actually very surprised at what we were actually given. If you want to be in the best area for the sights and easy access to travel for surrounding places of interest then this hotel is in an ideal situation. Some comments suggested that this hotel would only be suitable for a couple of days stay, but we were there for seven and have no adverse effects. The place was extremely clean and the room we had had a good sized bathroom with bidet. if people go to Venice, then the time spent outside far outweighs that spent indoors. Therefore, this hotel is superb for those on a budget, but also for those who like to be out and about and not wanting to sit about and admire a posh hotel room.Having a fridge was an advantage as we could avoid the extortionate prices for food and drink, instead living like a local buying fantastic produce from nearby supermarkets. Yes, Venice is expensive, but we prefer to go budget hotel and spend our money on operas and theatre visits. We will return to this hotel in the future as having an outdoor key made me feel as though I lived there.

We were only staying in venice for one night but staying at hotel Rio was great. the central location made it really easy to find, and navigate back to having wondered around and got lost several times. the rooms were clean and staff very friendly and welcoming, spoke very good english. Our only problem was that our room door didn't lock from the inside, not really a problem because we felt very safe in venice but just as an FYI. we didn't use it but there was a pull out bed in our room and the room was very spacious. we were on the third floor so lots of stairs, but that comes with the territory, maybe request a ground floor room if you have trouble with stairs.

We (2 adults and two teenage girls) rented the appartment with one big bedroom (double and single beds)and kitchen (one bed). We moved the other single bed to the kitchen to have the 2 singles together. The appartment is idealy located 2 minutes from St Marc and the main "Vaporeto" stop, but also 2 minutes from a supermarket, and a baker shop just around the corner. One the downside: Tiny fridge (the main one wasn't working), and stove. No washing liquid nor teatowel. I don't think they really expect people to cook and eat at the appartment. But a part from that I would definately recommend the appartment for small families that wont to be close to the heart of Venice for a few days.

Room was large and clean, ensuite was nice and clean. Air conditioning didn't work so well and just pushed warm air around. But we only had a short two night stay here, so didn't mind too much. I thought that I booked a 3* hotel but this is 2**. 3bedroom, third bed was like a pre-war steel 'thing'for soldiers. however I asked for another room and got a Wonderful room (for 30,= more per night worth every penny) in 3*Hotel of same owner (Tiepoli?). Modern, comfortable, light, good beds, ancient balcony on the canal with gondola's coming by, view to laguna. Absolutely wonderful. But don't go to Hotel Rio. it is way too expensive for what it is!

We stayed in a two bedroom floor. Very spacious room, gave us the privacy between parents and children. Excellent both location and value for money!

A very nice hotel with excellent surroundings. Clean room with bathroom. Just behind the St. Marco place, you can walk to most places in Venice.

If you just look for a place to lay your back after a long day walking, then hotel Rio is recommended. It is right at the center, very near to the taxi boat and souvenir shops.

Amazing location and spacious room. Excellent value for the money. Would recommend others to stay there. Compared to other hotels in Venice, this was a steal!!! Glad we had backpacks though because we had to walk up 3 flights of stairs to our room. I do not think the AC worked, but it was cool enough that we just opened the windows.

Location is quite central--AC is barely adequate for hot Venice summer, mosquitos are bad, breakfast is worse--but good deal for Venice in high season..

We were lodged at the Tiepolo Hotel, next to Rio because we ordered a superiro room, which indeed was great. Our friens stayed at Rio and also told us the room was brand new and excellent. There was some flaws with the air conditioning system but the staff were very helpful in trying to solve them.

The room is very basic and bathroom small. However, the location is fantastic. It's right behind St Mark square if you know how to walk. We hardly come into contact with the hotel staffs but that's okay since we're out most of the time. Breakfast is available in quite a number of shops near the hotel so no worries there. Apart from us getting itchy from the bed (bed bugs?) I'd say this hotel comes highly recommended.

The Hotel Rio is well located within Venice. As we traveled by train, it was a 25-minute waterbus ride from the train station and a short walk from the waterbus station. The staff were friendly and curteous, and spoke english well enough to contend with our broken Italian. We booked a room with a private bathroom/ shower, and it was all as advertized. The bathroom was located immediately inside the room door and the bed was located up a flight of stairs...very cool indeed. The room was clean and comfortable, and was actually in a building separate from the Hotel Rio proper; as a result, it was a bit quieter than the hotel proper. As with many European hotels, space is often at a premium within their buildings. The only item we found needed "getting used to" was the shower size and the curtain. That, however, is a minor issue when factoring in all other aspects of the hotel and its services. We would recommend the Hotel Rio to anyone who travels to Venice. Thank you, Hotel Rio, for a wonderful stay!

This was the first time we stayed in Venice, and so it was difficult trying to find the hotel, since all streets in Venice are tiny and just plain difficult to find. But Hotel Rio was pretty close to the main San Marco Square, so it took less than 20 minutes after getting off at the San Marco vaporetto stop to reach the hotel. The location is terrific - almost all the great sights are within walking distance. The room was very spacious - the most spacious we had throughout our entire Europe trip, even more spacious than the room at a three-star hotel later. The only thing I didn't like was the meager breakfast (though we would've had to pay additionally for it) - it had no hot items, just some cereal and milk and maybe some pastries. But there are more than enough little restaurants around the area to keep you well-fed.

We stayed in Hotel Rio in our honeymoon in June 2011. The best characteristic of it is its wonderful location. Just in the center of attractions, it is very near to Zaccharia Vaporetto stop and the most important squares. The staff was helpful enough. But it is a very old building and smells old! The inside parts should be renovated. In general, I would not immediately prefer this hotel if I had more choices. With that price, it could be better.

excellent value in a great location. you'd be hard-pressed to find another clean, safe hotel this close to St Mark's with prices this affordable. while the immediate surroundings are not much to speak of, walk two blocks and you are in the middle of the action.

Good points - great location, reasonable price for a basic room, clean room Bad points - humid room, slightly damp bedding, many mosquitoes (I was bitten 28 times in one night), double bed was 2 single beds pushed together, no towels (only thin sheets resembling towels that were non-absorbant). This place is all about the location. It is clean too (I can't fault the bathroom) but the room was undeniably damp and dark and nothing like the photos. Not a romantic place to stay but an ok place to crash if you need to be next to San marco square. The water bus stop is very near too. One discrepancy with the website - no air conditioning in the room. They did give us a map, which was useful. The staff spoke good English and French by the sound of it. There were no common areas that I was aware of, and no-one mentioned any bar.

Nice central location, if San Marco square is what you want. If offered, pay the supplement for a room at the Albergo Tiepolo--well worth it, with a great view of the canal and gondoliers. The one problem: Internet. It's only free for 30 minutes a day, you must have a cellphone, and we couldn't get it to work at all for the second or third days.

Superior room: Central location (right behind St. Mark's church), easy to find (about 100 metres from Zaccaria waterbus station, just go straight), spacious room (european standard: enough to fit a double bed, 2 of our large suitcases, with a small path to walk around stuffs), spacious wardrobe. A small safe, small fridge and small TV with various channels. Private bathroom is clean with hot water. Our room has a window overlooking the small yard in front of the hotel, where there are a few restaurants and mobile vendors. It is quite noisy, but if you close all the windows (and turn on the aircon, of course), you can't hear anything. Staff service is good, if you don't expect a smile (like in many other places in Italy). They upgraded us to a superior room from a standard room (due to misunderstanding our requirements), of course with a small charge, but then we could use their buffet breakfast (just some basic things: cereals, bread, butter & jam, salami, and free flow of coffee, chocolate or juice - They didn't change the menu for the 2 days we stayed there). Most of the time, you'll find nobody at the reception, but they have a phone there and you just dial 500 - someone will attend to you shortly. Most of the young staff (not the older members) can show you how to get around Venice, which waterbus to catch, what time, etc.) The restaurant downstairs (same owner) offers you 10% discount if you show them you Hotel Rio key. The food is good, but not very cheap even with the discount. The only drawback I can think of at the moment is the staircase. All the rooms are located on the second floor, which is about 4 small flights of stairs. There is no lift, so be prepared to carry your own luggage upstairs. Not sure if you feel worth the money if you pay the full rate (90 euros per night at this point of time), but overall we're extremely happy with the room and the location. The location is something you cannot beat. We enjoyed our stay in Venice a lot, and

We stayed 3 nights, with our 3 boys aged 7-11 & had a great time in Hotel Rio. Perfect location to dip in & out of St Marks square & come back to rest when the crowds get too much. Very convenient for Vaperatto, shops, restaurants & Doja's palace. Loved that we could see those sights early morning & late evening without the crowds. We had a triple & double room on the same floor, so perfect for our family. Would highly recommend. Breakfast isnt bad either !

Really nice place to stay in Venice, close by St.Marco basilica and other famous place in Venice. Recommend to stay here, so you can take a walk around this place. Only restaurant staff(old man) that property is owned too, not good in service and no service mind at all. I would not suggest to dine here. Sometimes found other room chattering for whole night

Exelent location, in the heart of the old town, close to everything, to San Marco, and sorrounded with good restaurants. The room was very small, but clean and comfortable. The girls were very helpful and polite. Breakfast. i'd recomend to add a fresh briosch. The water, while having a shower, were all over the floor in the bathroom, because there were no borders to the water under the shower place. Need some repair. mark 8.

How to reach Rio Hotel

By car
From Piazzale Roma, the closest point to Venice which is accessible by car, take waterbus line 1 (50 minutes) or 51 (25 minutes) to the San Zaccaria stop. From there, head straight to the end of Calle delle Rasse then turn left into Campo SS. Filippo e Giacomo where the property is located.
If you decide to park on Tronchetto Island take waterbus line no.2 to San Zaccaria where you may have to cross over the bridge on your left, then turn into Calle delle Rasse and proceed as above.

By train
From the Santa Lucia railway station, take waterbus line 1 or 51 to the San Zaccaria stop. From there, head straight to the end of Calle delle Rasse then turn left into Campo SS. Filippo e Giacomo where the property is located.

By airplane
From Venezia-Marco Polo Airport, take the Alilaguna shuttle service to St. Mark's Square (departures every hour). From there, follow the water edge until you reach the Doge's Palace, then cross over the Ponte della Paglia bridge and take the first small street on your left (Calle degli Albanesi).
A private watertaxi from the airport is faster but considerably more expensive.
