The door was very hard to unlock with the key. Hotel staff is from another hotel - Hotel Rio is just some rooms in another building. Hotel stuff told us, that we can have breakfast at the other hotel where we checked in but it was not.

Whilst the location of the hotel was great. I.e. close to San Marco Square and the water taxi, that was the only positive thing I have to say about the Rio hotel. The bed needed updating, and even though the sheets were clean the bed spread was in desperate need of replacement( full of holes).there was a TV stand in the room (wall) but no TV??. And no where to place your clothes drawers etc.Communication from hotel staff was non existent. Breakfast was not provided at the Rio Hotel- you had to go to another hotel which you had to find for yourself.Wifi was not available. The Rio Hotel definitely did not provide value for money in fact it was terribly overpriced for what you got which was not much.

superb location; clean room; basic comfort, but more than enough for the room rate; some noise coming from the kitchen of the Aciugheta restaurant, but it all stops around 22:30, so there is no problem if you get to your room later than this.

The location is excellent - ca. 5min to San Marco Square and Alilaguna stop (San Zaccaria). The room was nice and clean, the only problem was the restaurant downstairs. The waitresses store tables, chairs etc. very night and put them back every morning about 7am! The breakfast is poor - no vegetables or fruits

Very convenient to St Marks, which means the hotel is constantly surrounded by tour groups. Venice is so small and easy to walk around it would have been better to stay further afield. Hotel wifi was terrible - it only worked in the lobby, which is in an adjoining building, and then very slowly.

This hotel is like most of Venice: overpriced. The trouble with Venice is that it is not the place to save on the hotel bill: the weather is humid and musty, so you definitely need air conditioning on summer and good facilities. This hotel does not provide practically anything, just a room (that is acceptably clean most of the time). One good thing about this hotel is the location: it is two blocks from St. Mark Square so you will be perfectly located. My recommendation is that you book in Mestre and use the train. You'll get a much better deal. If you HAVE to stay at the island, this may be a good option if you're a single traveler. I wouldn't recommend it to a couple unless you're both very adventuring and have good resilience :)

The hot water in the shower never comes. It has a problem with the waterheating I suppose. 30 minutes to arrive the hot watter. We all would safe a lot of water if this would be solved. All you want from a hotel is a good place to rest and have a good clean time.

Apartment (4 people, one living room and kitchen with extra bed) in few minutes from reception, on quiet street with windows to corona bridge and canal, few steps to San Marco. Good location, quiet and clean. No cleaning at the room at all, they only changed the towels and emptied trash cans. The kitchen should be equipped with electric kettle. If you buy some tea, coffee, eggs and sausages on a nearby street you can have breakfast inside. Good place for good value.

Rooms 10: you'll hear water pipes gurgle water all night long and hot water heater cycling. The bedspread is worn and as the major feature in the room, depressing. Staff knew that hall light was blown--and left it that way. My room had one bulb missing- replaced on request. No window screen-expect mosquitoes to bite. Room was clean and close to San Marco.

Our room was in the second building, opening from the ally, located on the top floor. The room was spaceous and clean, the bathroom was modern, equipped with a bidet, but it was unfinished (ALL the light fixtures were missing, no shelf in bathroom, uncomfortable, overused bed, no wardrobe, no TV, no internet connection). The staff was nice, friendly and professional. If you don't want to spend too much time in the room (other than sleeping), it's fine, but otherwise it's overpriced. If you had the windows opened, you had the option to listen to the airco system of the restaurant, which is about 3 meters away, just opposite your window. Also, the bells of the nearby churches will make themselves heard regularly, so not the most quiet room. Also there's no mosquito net on the windows, so unless you love the little bloodsuckers, keep your windows shut. The most positive attribute of the accommodation is surely the location, literally a street away from St Marco. I recommend it to couples who will spend most of the day in the city and only need a clean room to sleep in. This building is absolutely not suited for families with small children, as there's no storage for babycarts, neither in the hallway, nor in the room, but there's lots of stairs to climb up.

Amazing location only about 2 minute walk to St. Marks. If you plan on taking a shower you really should bring your own because the towels are not high quality. When we arrived there was no one there to check us in and when we left there was also no one there to check us out. The staff seemed absent the entire time. Overall I would only recommend this hotel for the location. We got the quad room which was fine because it fit everyone perfectly. There was two twin beds, a cot(which isnt comfortable AT ALL), and a double bed. The price was expensive but it was carnivale weekend so we expected that. Take the water taxi to get to the hotel do not try and walk it is a 40 min walk from the train station.

Basic apartment near the hotel, (ap. 4 people)nice stay, i would recommend it! excellent position, clean.. Negative: old beds, they block money on your credit card (still blocked now, i payed yesterday), they ask you 2.50 euro as taxes Siamo stati benissimo, lo consiglierei a chiunque.

This was our first trip to Venice. We didn't like the hotel very much at all. Mosquitos came in under the door, there was a strange black hair in the bath and reception is non existent. And as is the case for Venice in general the price was far too high for the service offered. It annoyed us that the hotel didn't have wi-fi or any internet access. There was no room , that we knew of, other than our room where we could relax. It feels like Venice takes for granted its tourists.

Perfect location! The hotel is situated very near to the Piazza de Marco and easy to find. Near Vaporetto stop as well. Friendly, english speaking, helpful staff, but main reception in a different building nearby. The rooms were very clean, cleaned every day. Nice size rooms, but quite noisy surroundings. The shower floor did not drain towards the outlet hole so water flooded across the bathroom floor into the bedroom whenever I had a shower; I had to set up a levee bank of rolled up towels to keep the bedroom floor dry. There were no drawers or storage for clothes in the bedroom, only a hanging rod with two coat hangers for each person. There is no free wifi. The Reception is in another building.

I got a serviced apartment for 4 people (2 rooms, 5 beds which can be joined together if you like), one kitchen, one bathroom with shower, toilet and bidet. Agree with everyone here that they use the table cloths as bath towel. Don't really mind though since it served its purpose. The apartment is quiet and secure (3 layers door). Had some small problem with the lock and the key but was resolved quickly. The place is also quite near to San Marco, just a few steps away. The restaurant in front of the hotel (same owner) is okay. Good pizza, capuccino and I even got a 10% reduction for staying at the hotel. Too pity it ran out of Tiramissu by the time I ordered. Services are only ok though cuz they ran away as soon as I ordered, then popped out at the restaurant next door... musta been some connecting doors. One chef walked out of this restaurant turned out to be the chef of the next door one. I got quite an awkward moment there... Overall, a good stay, enjoyable and was far more than what I expected for a budget hotel.

However Do not go to the restaurant that spans both to the right and left of the entrance of the Rio hotel. I never experienced such a bad service in Italy. The staff was unfriendly. We did our chose because of location of Rio hotel, (just around the corner of St. Mark square and steps from vaporetto stop) and we enjoyed our stay there. We've got small, but perfectly clean, very silent room in annex building, on the ground floor, just as we've asked for. No bad surprises, no overcharges. We've got everything we were promised to - airconditioning, minibar, TV, perfectly clean bathroom, special room to leave the luggage. Restaurant was right there, outside of hotel. They have funny towels - of cotton cloth, like table-cloth. But they were shiny white and perfectly clean, so we didn't mind. :) Plus, they dry your skin better then some real but not very natural towels. Minuses - low light and too noisy fan in the bathroom. And the price is a little bit too high for clean and silent, but still simple and modest accomodation.

Having read some adverse comments about this hotel, especially if staying in the two star block, I was actually very surprised at what we were actually given. If you want to be in the best area for the sights and easy access to travel for surrounding places of interest then this hotel is in an ideal situation. Some comments suggested that this hotel would only be suitable for a couple of days stay, but we were there for seven and have no adverse effects. The place was extremely clean and the room we had had a good sized bathroom with bidet. if people go to Venice, then the time spent outside far outweighs that spent indoors. Therefore, this hotel is superb for those on a budget, but also for those who like to be out and about and not wanting to sit about and admire a posh hotel room.Having a fridge was an advantage as we could avoid the extortionate prices for food and drink, instead living like a local buying fantastic produce from nearby supermarkets. Yes, Venice is expensive, but we prefer to go budget hotel and spend our money on operas and theatre visits. We will return to this hotel in the future as having an outdoor key made me feel as though I lived there.

The hotel is located at a great place, easy to access from the seabus station, shops and restaurants. The staff was very friendly and kind. Its shower room was too small for a big person.

We were only staying in venice for one night but staying at hotel Rio was great. the central location made it really easy to find, and navigate back to having wondered around and got lost several times. the rooms were clean and staff very friendly and welcoming, spoke very good english. Our only problem was that our room door didn't lock from the inside, not really a problem because we felt very safe in venice but just as an FYI. we didn't use it but there was a pull out bed in our room and the room was very spacious. we were on the third floor so lots of stairs, but that comes with the territory, maybe request a ground floor room if you have trouble with stairs.

I have stayed at the the appartment before - which I really liked. Excellent value for money, good beds. The quadruple was really small. The two additional beds were just about the worst I was ever offered in a hotel.

We (2 adults and two teenage girls) rented the appartment with one big bedroom (double and single beds)and kitchen (one bed). We moved the other single bed to the kitchen to have the 2 singles together. The appartment is idealy located 2 minutes from St Marc and the main "Vaporeto" stop, but also 2 minutes from a supermarket, and a baker shop just around the corner. One the downside: Tiny fridge (the main one wasn't working), and stove. No washing liquid nor teatowel. I don't think they really expect people to cook and eat at the appartment. But a part from that I would definately recommend the appartment for small families that wont to be close to the heart of Venice for a few days.

stayed here with 5 of my girlfriends on spring break. got a quad and a double room. absolutely perfect location right by piazza di san marco, staff was very friendly and helpful. they have a restaurant and if youre a guest you get a discount, we didn't end up going but the menu looked yummy. rooms were pleasantly clean and bathrooms were very clean. only thing was in both rooms we had the showers overflowed because it didnt drain very fast. wasnt a big deal. if youre on a budget this is a really nice hotel and i highly recommend it!

This was my second stay in Venice, the first in a Rio Apartment. I would choose it again if travelling with three other people. Everything was super, but perhaps the fridge should be replaced, it was not really cold - which we did not mind in February, we used the window sills

Small hotel with small rooms. You have to go to another hotel (at 20 meters) to get the receptionist. Breakfast is very medium. Proximity to Saint Marc Plazza is the most interesting thing about the Rio hotel.

Location was terrific and the young lady at the front desk was lovely! We had a terrible smell of sewer back-up in our room and in the hallway...not pleasant at all. Glad I was only there for three nights.

We had a private room, at the back of hotel. Friendly bi-lingual staff. Tourist location, near San Marco Square. Close to water Buses. Recommended.

Hotel is well located and has services and internet facilities around. Directions to get there are not very clear and that might creat a bit of confusion. Room size is okay for one person, but bathroom shower was really small. A bit overpriced for what it is, but hey, it's Venice.

Nice hotel for short stays in a perfect location in Venice. We have stayed in a separate building in the back. Our room was ok, but noisy probably because of the nearby restaurants/bars. Only one light working in our room.

Hotel Rio menu and kitchen excellent for lunch/dinner. But the same breakfast every day becomes boring for longish visits to Venice.

This hotel is of poorer standard than a hostel! 2 flights of stairs to climb with 2 heavy (pre-cruise and post-cruise stays) bags, no porter and no lift. Sheets for towels!! Do not even contemplate staying here.

Great hotel, spacious rooms. Only disappointment was there was a kitchen but we weren't allowed to use it.

Room was large and clean, ensuite was nice and clean. Air conditioning didn't work so well and just pushed warm air around. But we only had a short two night stay here, so didn't mind too much. Venice is really expensive, so knew the prices would be a bit higher than what you would normally pay for a nicer room. The hotel was really central, in the middle of everything you need, clean and convenient. We thought it was adequate for our requirements.

Terrible disappointment. arriving in most beautiful city in the world and brought to a room in a backyard, along backsides of restaurant kitchens. No view, dark depressing staircase. Like being in a prison. I thought that I booked a 3* hotel but this is 2**. 3bedroom, third bed was like a pre-war steel 'thing'for soldiers. however I asked for another room and got a Wonderful room (for 30,= more per night worth every penny) in 3*Hotel of same owner (Tiepoli?). Modern, comfortable, light, good beds, ancient balcony on the canal with gondola's coming by, view to laguna. Absolutely wonderful. But don't go to Hotel Rio. it is way too expensive for what it is!

It was appartment for 4 (130 EUR per night) *** Rooms are better in real than in photos. *** Perfect location *** The only minus is air conditioner, that works poorly. It's a big minus!

How to reach Rio Hotel

By car
From Piazzale Roma, the closest point to Venice which is accessible by car, take waterbus line 1 (50 minutes) or 51 (25 minutes) to the San Zaccaria stop. From there, head straight to the end of Calle delle Rasse then turn left into Campo SS. Filippo e Giacomo where the property is located.
If you decide to park on Tronchetto Island take waterbus line no.2 to San Zaccaria where you may have to cross over the bridge on your left, then turn into Calle delle Rasse and proceed as above.

By train
From the Santa Lucia railway station, take waterbus line 1 or 51 to the San Zaccaria stop. From there, head straight to the end of Calle delle Rasse then turn left into Campo SS. Filippo e Giacomo where the property is located.

By airplane
From Venezia-Marco Polo Airport, take the Alilaguna shuttle service to St. Mark's Square (departures every hour). From there, follow the water edge until you reach the Doge's Palace, then cross over the Ponte della Paglia bridge and take the first small street on your left (Calle degli Albanesi).
A private watertaxi from the airport is faster but considerably more expensive.
