Rio was very centrally located on a small piazza just around the corner from the Bridge of Sighs. I was not there for the sightseeing, but for the Biennale and the location was excellent for that too. Just 5-10min. walk to Arsenale and the Giardini. Also the railway station was easily reached by vaporetto (several vaporetto stops just 2min.from the hotel). In general the area is very touristy and normally I prefer to stay a little bit off the beaten track but as said, the location was convenient for a short stay to visit the Biennale. The hotel was a little bit tricky to find because the entrance door actually looks like someone's private front door. There was not really a reception but just a phone to greet you and instructions to call a certain number. It seems the receptionist is actually working across the piazza in another small hotel simultaneously! But once I made the call she came in under a minute to check me in. The room was very tidy and clean, quite spartan but the bed was comfortable and the shower worked. That was really all I needed for my one night stay. With a lot of luggage for longer visit or with 2 people it might feel too small. My window overlooked the piazza but I had no trouble of noise during the night. In the morning around 8 the restaurants and souvenir sales carts start setting up for the day so that might wake you up. The hotel provided 10% discount voucher for the adjacent restaurant/wine bar which was a nice touch. Overall, I found this hotel very good value for money and would stay there again.

The Rio is well located in the centre of Venezia, and the staff is quite helpful. Alas, one of our rooms was very cold and we were told that heating was forbidden by law.

I was pleasently suprised by our hotel room, after reading very negative comments on a couple of web sites. The room/bedding/bathroom was imacutely clean. Dirty towels were changed every day. We were in a building behind the main Hotel Rio building, but if anything, this meant we were further away from the main throughfair and so the room was possibly quieter for this. The only two bad points for us were: the hair dryer was pathetic - as good as useless, and there were tiny ants in a certain area of the bedroom floor. But this is the fourth hotel I have stayed in in Venice and we noticed small ants twice before. I think they come with the territory. For a clean budget hotel, I would use this one again (we paid £60 a night for a double room - the cheapest I could find). We didn't bother with breakfast - this was another £20 a night for 2 people and reviews of the food from previous customers sounded poor. We did not have any bother with noise from outside. The air conditioning worked well (no such luxury in Pisa!!) - we left it on 24hrs and the cleaner kindly didn't adjust it when we were absent, so we had a cool room to return to. As they say, you get what you pay for, but we couldn't afford £100+ each night so had a great stay in this little hotel. The bedroom and bathroom were clean, the room was quiet and the bed was comfy after a day of endless walking!

Best thing about the Rio is the location and price. We had a noisy room - 9,loud at night from the trattoria adjacent. Then we moved to a ground floor room - 112, that smelled. When we commented, the clerk said all the ground floor rooms in Venice smell because of the canals. Overall tho' it was convenient and we'd stay here again.

Even though this hotel did not have an elevator and the towels provided were like giant tea towels(not looped cotton) you couldn't beat the location. two minutes from piazza san marco and the vaporetto. Breakfast was adequate as long as you had the required room. Not all rooms had breakfast attached. This is my second time to Venice. We would stay again at Hotel Rio.Staff were very helpful and pleasant.

The Hotel is in a very nice location, the room was neat and quiet. The bed was big enough to sleep with our baby there without an extra bed. Venezia hotels are very expensive. Rio has a very good price/service ratio.

We had read the other reviews stating that the rooms were down a dark ally behind a restaurant, tiny reception, no lounge/public area so knew what to expect. The rooms were spacious, clean, comfortable and perfect for our stay. The bathroom was good with good water pressure in the shower. Our breakfast next door was adequate and what we expect in Europe for breakfast - the coffee was great. This hotel cannot be beaten for location, cleanliness and price in Venice. This was a great budget stay. Not great for a romantic break but a great budget hotel. We would definately stay there again and will recommend this hotel to friends.

I was a single traveller, my room was small but had a double bed and modern bathroom fittings. It was in a quiet courtyard at the back of the main part of the hotel. Air conditioning excellent. I had to pay for breakfast but only 7 euros with no restrictions put on amounts of coffee, tea etc we could drink and how much we could eat. Considering coffee costs 3.50 euros throughout Venice not a bad deal. Hotel in excellent location about 3 minutes from Vaporetto stop. I hope to stay here again. My only complaint would be that there was no television in the room.

price is great. Great location if going to airport, or willing to stay out of city center. Easy bus ride to center. Breakfast was great. Staff was extremely helpful. Hotel is on busy street, so not much in area, but just as a place to sleep, if you are willing to bus into town, it is a great deal.

First of all this is not a hotel but some distributed renovated rooms in different ancient buildings. We got a room on 2nd floor and there was no elevator in the building and the stairs were so narrow that it was very difficult to take luggage upstairs. It was 33°C and the ridiculous ancient air conditioner although it was running, was not cooling the room at all. We tried to open the windows but the building was so ancient that the windows were broken and they have tried to tighten them with the help of some tape (adhesive material) and couldn't be opened. On 1st night we couldn't sleep well due to the hot room and we did complaint next day in the morning, and the receptionist came with us to our room to check the air conditioner, she checked it and said its OK, its running. We tried a lot to make her understand but she repeated her statement again and again and left the room. The second night we had the same problem. Well, now, concerning the services they promise to provide, there was no TV although they have mentioned on the website. Furthermore, the towels they offer are not towels but some thing like bedsheets. The location of the property (I'll not call it a hotel) is very good. Last but not the least, the photographs on the website were not of the building (rooms) we stayed in, may be they are of some other building's room but one should not go on photographs. Although located in the central city (Saint Mark's Square) and not expensive, I'll not recommend it to anybody in summer as I stayed in it in summer.

Venice hotels are usually very noisy, crowded places, but this was quiet (although the air conditioning, I think, made gurgling noises all night...) even thought it was right on a busy square with lots of cafes and restaurants. An excellent place to stay if you're interested in being in the middle of things but also want to sleep some time - and really 5 minutes walk from San Marco. Excellently priced for that; although the room was a bit small, even for one! Again, this is standard for Venice as the building's often can;t be changed much internally.

Very good location close to St Mark's. Hotel consists of rooms in a number of buildings around a small square. Room was basic though comfortable if rather old in it's furnishings and facilities. For the price it was good value in Venice especially in regard to it's location.

Location was fantastic! minutes from san marco square and close to rialto bridge, nice cafe, bakery and pizzeria in the immediate surroundings. Clean basic accomodation. Main reception in separate building across a small square. No lifts and we were told to leave the pram downstairs and often front door was left open and unattended. Provided very nice baby travel cot but charged extra 20 euro per night for it which is more than ive ever been charged before. Like many of the other reviews mentioned towels are actually bed sheets not proper towels but considering this is venice for the price it was a great deal.

Arriving about noon there was no one at reception and the entry door was open.I wandered about a bit, calling out and finally decided to pick up a telephone on the small desk to find somebody when a woman came in and scolded me for trying the telephone. I tried to explain there was no one there & she simply pointed to a small sign outside by the entry saying to ring a bell. I did not notice this sign as the door was open. After this uncomfortable start things improved immediately. I was able to check into my room instantly instead of waiting until the stated check-in of 3pm which made me very happy as I needed to be away quickly. Reception thought I'd booked double room so perhaps that is why I had a larger room than anticipated but other than that they had no issues or changes. The bathroom/wetroom was sufficiently large for a single, although it took me a day to realize the small plastic stool was probably in there to keep the corner shower curtain from clinging to me as I showered (a very tight corner). Dealing with a wet floor was not the most pleasant but I simply used one of the additional traditional linen towels as a bath mat. My room was on the first floor corner, immediatley over the restaurant and so with the windows open it was quite noisy in the evenings but quieted down around 23.00-24.00. Fortunately Venice was cool enough at night so I would air the room just before going to sleep and, while the a/c was not very strong, it was not totally necessary. If the weather were to become much hotter than my early June stay I doubt the room would be comfortable. Breakfast was adequate, although I was slightly disconcerted to find cheese slices individually wrapped in plastic! The presentation varied depending, I imagine, on which staff did the preparation. Everyone was friendly and accepting that I did not speak Italian, except for normal greetings. I snacked in the restaurant just once & would not repeat it.

This was the third time I have stayed at Hotel Rio, and I will be back there again soon. For Venice it is remarkable to find such an affordable hotel in such a perfect location. We dined at the restaurant below and were well taken care of. The room was much more spacious than I would have thought. A comment re the towels made by someone else reviewing this hotel...these thin cotton towels are the norm in most 2* Italian hotels, they dry very quickly and are much kinder on the environment.

Great location (a block from one of the vaporetto stops) and near a lot of great restaurants and an internet cafe. If you are checking in late at night or need to get into your room late at night, you have to go down an alley to the main office and have someone let you in. Overall it was great for the price we paid.

My husband and I were in Italy on vacation. We found the Rio easily, however this is not where you check in. We had to find a second hotel down a small alley before we could check in. Our room was down a different alley (behind their restaurant) and up 3 flights of stairs. I think we got the last room available (even though it had been booked months in advance). Upon entrance to our room, there was a small bathroom. Then you had to go up another flight of stairs to get to the bed. This is not close to anything they had pictured on the website. It looked like a loft you'd put your niece in when she visits. It was 2 single beds pushed together and made with full size sheets. The room served its purpose as the Rio is located very nicely amongst restaurants and just two blocks from St. Marks Square. I doubt we would stay here again.

The journey in Venice has been perfect. The weather was gorgeous and kind with us. The Hotel Rio location is wonderful: just a walk far from main square (few hundreds meters from S.Marco square).

There were four of us in a double sized room. Quite cozy, but we had no intention of spending much time in the room. The room was spotlessly clean, but there was a bit of a smell. The shower door seemed to have been replaced by a curtain which was annoying. It reduced the size of the shower space and stuck to the body. The staff were very friendly and tried to help with anything we threw at them. Location was excellent. Breakfast was adequate. Venice is beautiful. The location is fantastic, a quick 5 minute walk to St Mark's and the vaporetto and water bus to the air port. Overall, a good basic hotel with a very good location.

The location is good. My room were ok, but at morning were to many noising, if you close the window is ok. The people that work at the hotel are cold. The breakfest was poor and the same thing every day... We travel a lot and we never heve seen a towel like that! Impossible to get dry.

I have stayed in Venice many times, and the Rio was exactly what I expected. Wonderful staff, clean and in a terrific location for proximity to St. Mark's. The rate I paid was great for high season in Venice. I had been warned the breakfast offered next door wasn't stellar, but I have had worse. Overall I would recommend the Rio to anyone looking for a nice, clean place to stay at a great price. I am a mid 40's man who tends to travel alone, so the fact there isn't a lift in the hotel is OK. You really can't beat the location for the price.

It appeared they may have been doing some remodeling, as the reception area was just a desk in a hallway. The room was fine, but walking to it through an alley behind a restaurant was a little sketchy. Clean and fine for the price, plus, close to San Marco square.

we stayed in the Rio Hotel for three nights and were absolutely happy with everything. The breakfast was great and the employees always friendly. I hope to visit Venice again and I would always go to this hotel! We really recommend it!

After booking a triple room we were offered an apartment 2 minutes from the hotel. This was in a typical quite narrow venice alley next to a canal. Apartment was clean, comfortable, secure, with use of kitchen and gave us plenty of space for 3. Hotel is ideally placed, 2 minutes walk from Basilica San Marco, vaporetto and at least a dozen restaurants. We had a great stay and would definately recommend Venice, the Hotel Rio and Apartment B to anyone - except those with problems with stairs or wrongly expecting great luxury at 2* prices.

This was not a hotel in the known sence of word. These were rooms above a hallway. Stone staircase which was steep with sharp turns no offer of help with luggage!!!!!!!! I had a bad fall on stairs and although ambulance was sent for at the time, there was no follow up from management. the location of the hotel was excellent the only good thing to say. Compared with any other hotel i've ever stayed in world wide I would say way overpriced.

excellent location close to St Mark's; easiest to find walking up from San Zaccaria vaporetto stop.

TV had functioned badly, but it was no problem. My visit was great because of tourist attractions. For my room nb.: "10" the appropriate price would be 50 EUROS, not 70 as I paid

We had a lovely stay here. Originally we booked a room for 3 people but were told that we were being moved to an apartment just a short walk away. We were initially sceptical of the idea but were very pleasantly surprised with the apartment which was spacious, clean and air conditioned. It had 2 bedrooms containing 1 double bed and 3 single beds. The apartment was serviced every day and was located on a quiet street just a minute's walk from the hotel and 3 min's walk from San Marco Square. We didn't avail of the free breakfast but we did have a lovely dinner in the hotel's adjoining restaurant where guests receive a 10% discount. Staff were friendly and helpful. My only complaint would be the fact that the website seems to contain no info about the apartment to which we were transferred and the first we heard of the change was after we had booked on the venere website. As it happens we were very happy with the accomodation but it would be nice to know what you're getting at the time of booking.

Was pleasantly impressed with the hotel and our triple room, as I was travelling with my two boys ages 14 and 10. The room was just right, very clean with room service, air conditioning, private bathroom with a good size tub for relaxing hot baths in evening after walking around Venice all day. My only slight comment is that with the breakfast provided I wish freshly made cappuccini were included instead of coffee vendor machine type cappuccino. Other than that my boys and I had a great stay. The hotel is 5 minutes from Piazza San Marco and surrounded by restaurants one of whom I highly recommend - Trattoria Righetta.

My friend and I visit Venice the first time.Rio is very close to place of attractions and easy to transport which is the best for this hotel but the room is quite small. We have no problem in bed because we are small. The other thing we like is we found Chinese restaurant closed to this hotel.

Hotel is well situated near St. Marks square on a small campo. The hotel is very close to an internet cafe and several good restaurants. Although the hoteliers gave me excellent directions to the hotel i still managed to get lost so i would reccomend buying a detailed map of venice before anything else and sorting out exactly how to get there. Room was tidy and the bathroom was clean. Helpful, friendly staff. Two thumbs up.

Nice location, hotel okay; my opinion is not based on other stays in Venice. Hotel is probably better value than my rating indicates. Employees very nice.

I have been staying at Rio for three nights together with my wife. The hotel is absolutely convenient with regard to nearest vaporetto's stop (S. Zaccaria) and San Marco (5 minutes' walk each), and easy to find. The room was clean and quiet despite the fact that the Campo is usually busy and crowdy until late night. Consider that rooms are quite small and there is no lift available though. The breakfast could improve but it's fresh and plentiful. The staff was friendly and available. I would not recommend restaurant Aciugheta: too expensive for the quality of the food provided. Instead, the nearby restaurant Ridotto is very expensive but the food and service are of absolutely excellent quality. The price of the room is high, but consider you are in Venice. Finally, I would recommend Rio as a good hotel to stay in Venice.

Hotel rooms were on small size (can't expect much else in Venice) but clean and full facilities. Staff welcoming and willing to help. Breakfast was next door but plentiful and simple continental fare. Packed breakfast provided on leaving day as we left before 8.00am. Hotel in ideal location (2 minutes walk from St Marks Square and 2 minutes from waterfront). Highly recommeded.

EVERYTHING was PERFECT except for my (first)single room (nr. 10)with very heavy motor noise from the heating system of the hotel.

Was left standing in reception for 5 minutes before anyone bothered to turn up both on check in and check out (there was no-one else there). Didn't appreciate the trail of ants that led from the bed across the room, nor the very noisy guests in the next room that hotel management didn't seem inclined to ask to be quiet even at 3am. The included breakfast was particularly uninspiring.

for the money the Rio is a good value. if you are older and/or carrying a great deal of luggage the steps to the room are quite a challenge. the view from our room was great. we enjoyed all the surrounding areas. the breakfast could be better but was sufficent and fresh. it is ideally located just a few streets from San Marcos square.

If you decide to park on Tronchetto Island take waterbus line no.2 to San Zaccaria where you may have to cross over the bridge on your left, then turn into Calle delle Rasse and proceed as above.
By train
From the Santa Lucia railway station, take waterbus line 1 or 51 to the San Zaccaria stop. From there, head straight to the end of Calle delle Rasse then turn left into Campo SS. Filippo e Giacomo where the property is located.

From Venezia-Marco Polo Airport, take the Alilaguna shuttle service to St. Mark's Square (departures every hour). From there, follow the water edge until you reach the Doge's Palace, then cross over the Ponte della Paglia bridge and take the first small street on your left (Calle degli Albanesi).
