Though hotels in venice are very expensive, luckily we found this from venere. The location is perfect, quite near the railway station, and the employees are quite helpful. Though the room we ordered does not have a private toilet, but it does have a private bathroom, we found it more convinient than we expected.

The street leading to the hotel not clearly shown. Initially have difficulty to locate the hotel. 1st nightthe room heater was down but the front desk didnt inform us. However, the next day , the hotel manager changed us to a new wing and a bigger room to ensure the heater is working fine. Excellent location, 5 min walk to train station.

A good hotel to stay in Venice. Very clean and comfortable. Not a lot of rooms in the hotel so I found the staff very friendly and responsive. The only problem is finding the place. But its not the problem of the hotel owners its just the city has small lanes and are difficult to figure out.

The Mercante de Venezia is very well located if you arrive by train and will go on foot to the hotel. You don't need to get a boat or carry your luggage by bridges to get there. It's about 5min on foot. The hotel is very clean and the rooms are very cosy, although small.

I arrived late at night with heavy lugage and was happy for not having to walk more than 5 minutes to reach the hotel, from Santa Lucia station. The design of the furniture is quite artistic and makes you fill inside a typical Venezian atmosphere. You can walk to San Marcos in 20 minutes or enjoy shopping in the way for hours. The gondols and boats can be boarded at a 5 minutes walk from the hotel. I will be glad returning to this city and hotel, al least for three days.

Nice hotel in a good location. Seems to be competitively priced for Venice. Our only difficulty was that we had mosquitos in the room at night!

ALTAMENTE RECOMENDABLE

We stayed in Venice for 3 days with our 6-month-old daughter and we were happy with the location of the hotel since it was easy to get to from the airport and to the train station which was important considering we had to move with a stroller. The hotel was clean, the service was great, and the breakfast was simple but all that we needed. The location was excellent and i would recommend the hotel to others.

Although by no means a bad hotel, this was the worst hotel of the 5 I stayed in on my holiday in Italy (and also the most expensive - the best was also incidentally the cheapest, in Milan). The room, although clean was slightly dingy and probably due for re-decoration (with some signs of rising damp - perhaps inevitable in Venice). The shower was small and there was mildew on the door seal. The telephone in the room didn't work. The biggest disappointment was the breakfast with limited choice and poor quality fruit juice and ham. There were also no forks provided. For the price I would have expected better, even making allowances for Venice being an expensive city.

Excellent location for travelers arriving in Venice by rail. It's five minute walk from the rail station and just off the beaten path so you aren't completely over-run by all the other tourist. The staff is warm and friendly and the space has a nice family atmosphere.

This is a small and quiet hotel. The staff like all the Italian I met in my trip were nice and friendlly. Breakfast was included in the price. The hotel is very near to Ferrovia canalbus station and there is good access to most of the touristic sites. A nice self-service restaurant (Brek) is within walking distance to the hotel.

I stayed at this hotel for one night, on August 11-12. I booked the room on Venere.com on June 30, booking a double with private bathroom, as stated on the hotel description page. However, upon arrival, my girlfriend and I were given a room without a bathroom, and we were told that we had to walk down the hall and use a bathroom that only we would have a key to. Even better, the key was an old-fashioned skeleton key. I checked the fire escape map plan, and it showed that all of the other rooms except for one had a private bathroom inside. So basically, if you book this hotel, you are taking a chance that you will get a room that requires you to lock your room door behind you, walk through a public area with a towel, and shower or use the bathroom in a locked bathroom while other guests freely walk by. In the morning, I took up this matter with the hotel owner. He just smirked and refused to even apologize, telling me that I got a good room rate. I then explained that I got a good rate because I booked in advance, and he didn't know what to do. He kept his smirk and stuttered about how I had a private bathroom, and no one else used it. When I held up the hotel pamplet so that he could read the words "private bathroom in each room", he just mumbled more, so I expained that I would write about my experience on venere.com. I even pointed out the fire escape map and how every other room but one had a bathroom inside, but he just mumbled more about "good rate". So... I gave up. Upon checking out, we asked to stow our 2 suitcases in the luggage room. The owner carried them into the dining area and placed them between two tables. There were about 6-8 other bags there already, in a common area where anybody could walk up and take a bag without a problem. Reluctantly, I left the bags. When we returned several hours later, a different staff member allowed us to go into the room and take two bags without knowing if they were even ours.

Was given a triple upon check-in because of work being done. Then moved to a double for the last night. Triple was very roomy, nice and clean. Double was very small and not very clean. Right behind lobby and very noisy. Not too hard to find if you know that some streets are only about 3 to 6 feet wide.

We stayed at Il Mercante de Venezia for 3 nights in May 2005. The hotel was quite close to the train station and easy to find with the directions that I had. The hotel was fairly clean but our room was the tiniest in the whole building. Our "private" bathroom was actually outside of our room. We had a key to the bathroom but you could imagine the inconvenience of having to get up in the middle of the night and go out into the hall in order to go to the bathroom. In addition, our room was very, very small. I was expecting small rooms in Italy but this room was about 8 feet x 10 feet!! This hotel was OK but if you plan on staying there, MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON'T GET ROOM #6!! I would have never booked this hotel if I knew that the bathroom was separate.

Very close to train station. Nice employees. We had ants in our 1st room and the next night they switched rooms for us and upgraded our room. Also, they will not let you check out early if you have reservations. If you check out early, they will still charge you for the 2nd night.

directions were poor. They needed to tell you to refer to the direcitons from the train station if you came by car or any other mode of transportation. After wandering the streets for awhile and getting misdirected help, we eventually found it and then realized the directions from the train station would get you staight there. The location was very central and easy to get whereever we wanted to go. The damp musty odor was a bit much. One person in our party had an extreme allergic reaction to the mold.

Great little hotel! Comfortable beds, sufficient breakfast, excellent staff. The staff assisted us with dinner upon arrival our first evening by personally escorting us to the restaurant to make sure we found it! They were friendly and very helpful with anything we asked. They will help with finding evening concert tickets if you request it early enough in the day! (We got there too late to take advantage of this service and didn't have time to go to a concert the next night.) Location was close to train station. Just follow the directions exactly. Take the second small alley to the left. Their sign is the second sign on the left. I would definitely stay there again!

A bit difficult to find the hotel in the dark. A good idea would be to have a name-sign in the main street to point into the small street where the hotel is.Small, but nice room, nice and clean bathroom. A bit cold at night,as the weather was chilly, and no heating in the room.

2 of the hotels that we checked into did not have a room for us and said the did not think we were coming. We not only showed them our confirmation but had called to verify with the hotels that we still on plan to stay with them. I believe that there is a tremendous break down of communication between your company and the hotels you book for. The hotels were not only rude to work with but they blammed you (Venere) for the problem. I would like a response via phone. 818 802-1111

Il Mercante de Venezia was great! I had trouble finding it and had to ask around a lot before I actually found it. There really wasn't any street names and it would be helpful on the map to have landmarks(like which stores are just next to the road) and there is also a tile sign on the ground indicating the direction to a different hotel, but I think it would be helpful to indicate this in the directions to get there.

First time to Venice and it was wonderful. All the nightmare stories never came true. We found our way to our room right away, but pay attention. What you think may be an alley is the street. We were warned about being in the train station area but it was never a problem. It was convenient to everything. I felt sorry for people lugging their suitcases on and off the boats. The room (a triple) was spacious and beautifully decorated and even had a little patio to sit. The staff was helpful and congenial. We had a private taxi take us to Murano Island and give us a private glass blowing demonstration (no charge). The breakfast was simple but nice. And they had the best coffee we found in Europe. They charged me the price quoted and when we arrived early off the train he kept our bags till the room was ready and then brought them up for us while we were out enjoying the sights. I would go back there again and again.

I arrived at Venice around 21:30 and found out no indication of the hotel. I asked twice, but they did not know the location, even the name of hotel. Then, I jumped into a hotel and asked again where the hotel located. Even a person of that hotel, which is located near from the hotel, didn't know where it is located. Finally, he made a phone to the hotel and I was able to get there. Hotel room is just a very small one and toilet/shower is located accross the corridor, which was really inconvenient!

Summary: Don’t waste your time/money at this hotel. Small (two story 7 to 9 rooms) hotel with a very misleading three star rating. We stayed at 5 different hotels on this trip and this was the only “lousy” hotel. Venere should consider de-listing this hotel. Pros: Clean, newly renovated and the air-conditioning worked. Cons: Difficult to locate, it is close to the train station but is on a back alley which is connected to the left of 148 Lista de Spagna. Just like all of our other bookings, we requested a non-smoking room with at bathroom, AC, fridge, etc. (i.e.; typical three/four star minimum). We arrived Thursday afternoon and they walked us up to a very small room with a “private” bathroom located across the hallway from our room and they told us that this is what we had booked for € 150/night (wife not happy). We left our baggage there and went to look for another hotel. Within a few hundred meters we found nicer/cheaper two star hotels, nicer three star hotels and very nice four star hotels, and except for the three star Continental Hotel they were all booked for Saturday night. The Continental had rooms for € 170/night and one deluxe room over looking the Grande Canal for € 210/night. We booked the Grande Canal room for Fri/Sat night and returned to the Mercante di Venezia to tell them that we would be checking out the next day. They made things very awkward for us, they wanted to be paid for the Friday night as part of the some cancellation compensation and they would not accept the fact that this was not the quality of hotel that we had expected/booked, or comment on the fact that they had the worst hotel deal in the immediate area. We had a lousy night’s sleep because there is no carpeting on the stairs or hallway so we heard all the other guests return to their rooms that night and there were some annoying noises from the back alley which our room faced onto. We only looked at the sad breakfast table offerings as we checked out in the next m

Great location, near the train and bus stations, and also for the waterbuses to get around the city. However it was a little difficult to find at first from the map. Room was clean and tidy, though quite small. We had the one behind reception and the only problem was the noise. People ringing the bell for attention during the night is enough to wake you up. The staff were friendly and spoke good English. Overall our two night stay was very comfortable and for Venice the price is reasonable. We would stay there again.

5 min. walk to train station, yet very quiet area. Window did open, no mosquito screens on windows (probably none in most hotels). Only 1.5 years since remodeled, double bed in Rm 4 is actually two beds pushed together so there is a seam that you feel in the middle. Strong cat smell from local tomcat spraying near window--since room was on ground floor. Friendly staff, spoke OK english. Simple breakfasts of rolls, cereal, yogurt, juice. Coffee is good. I would stay there again unless prices went up. We paid 460 euros for 4 nights. Prompt email replys from hotel. Venere.com worked well.

This was a great little place, more like a B&B than a hotel. The rooms were tiny but incredibly clean and recently refurbished with great bathrooms (much nicer than itlooks on the website)and we were there to see Venice not to worry about the size of the hotel room. I thought it was a good location, easy to walk from the bus station and even nearer the train station. This is one city where the area close to the station isn't at all seedy, One thing I would say is when you book an ensuite room make sure it's ensuite. I thought I had booked two ensuite rooms but one had a private bathroom across the hall. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel. For what we paid it far exceeded expectations.
