I strongly recommend this great hotel to anybody visiting Venice. Convenient location walking distance from Train Station, easy access to all canalbus/canaltaxis/gondolas, multiples dinner choices walking around for all the prices, safe and quiet, out of the very busy area of Plaza San Marcos. Nice and elegant average size for european hotel, good breakfast, and very nice, helpful and cooperative staff from the frontdesk to the restaurant. I asked help for the locked Safety-box once and the FrontDesk guy resolved my problem inmediately. It was impressive. Nice outside tables to eat or drink facing the grand canal. You could not ask more for the price. It is not a 5 star but it is a great place to be. I definitively will come back. Very Important: Remember you are in Europe, do not make comparison with america. Allow yourself to enjoy the greats things european cities has to offer and when you fly back you will enjoy again the american way of life. It is the best combination.

We just returned from a 2 night stay at Hotel. Our ages are 60+. Our room was a deluxe canal view & we were very happy with it. Hotel is a two block walk from Bus Terminal & approx 5 from Cruise Ship. Public Bus was less than 2 Euro. Public transport boats are just over the bridge from Hotel. We bought a 36 hour pass for 21 Euro each. Individual trips are 6.50Euro The Breakfast at Hotel was very good & there are lots of side walk cafe's within walking distance.

The good point was that front desk people could speak english very well. also it was very close to train station just oposite side of Grand canal.

Very nice and pleasant hotel. Rooms on the Grand Canal side are not quiet. Clean, nice staff, pleasant stay, but the "De Luxe" room I had was really small for this type of hotel and the bathroom wasn't at the level at all. Did not appreciated the excursion they proposed to Murano for the visit of the glass industry; commercial and unrespectfull people there.

The hotel is just across the train station - very convenient if travel with train. The rooms we stayed in were without view but they are quiet and comfortable. Nice breakfast.

Great location. We were traveling by train and the hotel is just across the canal with a bridge a few steps away. It was expensive but we wanted to splurge for Venice.

Our 3 day stay in Venice was great. Very enjoyable. The hotel was in a good location. Very convenient for our travels because it was right across the canal from the train station, which we did alot of our traveling. It was our first trip to Venice. It was an absolutely amazing, one of a kind city. The Hotel staff was great, english speaking, knowledgable and helpful. The food at the hotel wasn't only good and decently price compared with other restaurants, Venice being quite expensive. Overall great overall experience.

This is a great hotel on the Grand Canal. It is opposite the train station and in walking distance from the bus station. Good cruise ship destination. We walked to and from the cruise ship. It is very clean. The breakfast was excellent and included in the price.

Would not rush back to this hotel. Though very conveniently located on the Grand Canal close to all modes of public transport I thought the rroms not worth their price in terms of spaciousness and decure versus price. Breakfast very unexciting. Have experienced much better value and warmer experience on other occasions in Venice. Hotel staff at best rather obsequious.

Perfect location. Hotel almost directly across from station and close to all transportation and what ever you wish to see/do in Venice. The noise from the canal and the constant sound of suitcases being rolled along under my window was easily shut out by closing the window - just be prepared, the convenience of the location means you see and hear everyone coming and going through Venice, 24/7. Get a room with no view for quiteness. Beautiful room, beautiful hotel, helpful staff and a breakfast with a selection of meats/eggs to compliment the carbs. Tip - pack one super small suitcase for your entire stay in Italy, your suitcase will make you misterable if it is large. I would go back to this hotel.

The check-in desk person actually "lied" about not having a request from me and confirmation from the hotel of an upper floor room....and gave us a lower floor room. Upon checkout, the front desk showed me the file that clearly indicated that I was to get an upper floor room. Other than dishonesty insofar as the checkin situation, the accomodations were quite satisfactory but obviously at exhorbitant Venice prices!!!!

Although I down rated the Quietness of the room and Spaciousness of the room, we did get what I asked for, a room with a view of the Grand Canal. Our room #209 on the 2nd floor had a spectacular view up and down the Grand Canal. I got some great day & nighttime photos from the small balcony. This view did come with a price, in terms of noise. The Canal boat traffic is constant 24 hours a day. Plus there is considerable foot traffic with people talking till quite late in the evening. Keeping the windows close helps a little. Also, this was the smallest room on our trip. (They do have larger rooms, but no view.) Be advised if you are coming from the airport you will depart at Plaza Roma, you will need to cross two smaller side canal bridges to get to the hotel. If coming by train you have one big bridge over the Grand Canal. We arrived from the airport by bus, and departed by train. The concept of traveling light became very apparent and I lugged 3 large and 2 small suitcases up and down the two small bridges. I gladly paid 25 Euro to have two porters and a cart take our bags from the hotel up and over the big bridge to the train station.

This hotel exceeded our expectations. We walked from the Piazzale Roma with our bags, not 5 minutes to the door (of course over three bridges, but of course it is Venice). The room was spacious and lovely with opening windows and shutters so we could hear the action outside and smell the sea air. The staff helped us choose a classical concert among several offered and it was perhaps the best live performance we have ever heard/seen! We will certainly return here on future trips. An excellent establishment.

Unable to locate confirmed reservation on check-in, Location is excellent however rooms are extremly small -- you pay top price for a room with a view that is not much bigger than a postage stamp -- the bathroom shower stall is more like a cruise ship or RV style than a 4 star hotel --- Next visit to Venice will look for a better value and more spacious room

The Hotel was great, the staff was very knowledgeable, the room was rather quite eventhough it was just by the Grand Canal and close to a Vaporetto stop, and across the train station. The staff indicated a good restaurant at a fair price "Tre Gobbi" and close to the hotel. However I do think that the price we paid 150,00 Euros for a deluxe double room canal view is some 15 to 20 euros overpriced. Other than that everything was fantastic. I would stay there again. The breakfast to go was rather poor, since we had to leave at 6:00 am. Excellent place to stay if you are coming to Venice by train. 5 minute walk over the bridge.

We flew overnight from USA, arrived by bus from the airport and walked with our luggage over the canal. This was very manageable. The hotel desk greeted us and we checked our luggage as our room was not yet ready. We needed to only cross the canal bridge to reach the vaporetto stop. The Front Desk was wonderful and able to arrange any activity we wished for. They also recommended some outstanding restaurants. We asked for a quiet room and it was indeed so. The breakfast buffet had a very good variety of hot and cold items. The Carlton & Grand Canal is an excellent facility. Very convenient. We would stay here again.

Location Location Location .. This hotel is located near the bus / train station which makes it possible to take the bus from the airport for $3 euro, versus a water taxi for $85 euro. The rooms are small, but you are traveling to Venice, therefore not spending must time in the room. Breakfast is good and nicely set up. Recommend you purchase a two day pass on the Venice water bus, and avoid the water taxis. The hotel will give you a taxi ride to the glass works factory for a private tour, but the salesmen associated with the glass factories are a little sleazy. The hotel was an easy in and out of Venice, and we will stay there again during our next visit. Scott Aschoff

We had two canal view rooms, one for ourselves and one for our teenage daughters. Both rooms were more spacious than I expected. The location of the hotel is incredible if you need to arrive, or leave, by train. The hotel is directly across the canal from the station and a bridge to cross is only meters away. Gondolas are available right out in front of the hotel. A main vaporetta stop is also very close, in front of the train station. The staff was professional, friendly, and helpful. I would return to this hotel.

Great hotel within walking distance of the train and bus stations. Quite a long but enjoyable walk to St Marks. Used the water bus a few times when the legs were worn out which was handy as it stops just near the hotel. Had a superior room that was fantastic with its own balcony over the grand canal.

Represented as a beautiful view room of the Canal. While there was a great view of the Grand Canal, the more oppressing view was of the train station on the opposite side of the canal. While the common areas were OK, the hallways and rooms (while spacious) were ragged and worn. We booked based on the positive reviews. Maybe we are too picky? We've stayed in nicer hotels in Venice for similar rates so the price to quality was off, in our opinion.

I would recommend the rooms at this hotel. I stayed in room 207 which overlooked the grand canal and was directly across from the train station. There were occasional times when I could hear noise from the street, but the staff had warned me of this and it really wasn't a problem. Room size was good enough for myself, my wife and our 2 year old son and his pack and play. The staff had excellent suggestions about restaurants (you have to eat at Ostaria al Vecio Pozzo). They were very professional and did everything well. The hotel's breakfast was good as well. When we come back to Venice, we are going to stay in this very room. Venere.com did a great job with describing the accommodation and booking the room.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel very much. we went away for a long weekend for our 10th wedding annerversary and this hotel was perfect. Location was perfect next to the train and water bus stations on the Grande Canal. The only problem with the Hotel was that they were carrying out some refurbishment work while we were there so we didn't have access to the garden room. However, we were not disturbed by the work being carried out. We would definately visit this hotel again and we thought that although it was expensive the hotel was well worth it.

The room was immaculate and beatifully furnished and decorated. The breakfast area was being remodeled, so the space was limited and a little cramped. The notice of the remodeling was posted in the elevators with an apology. The main stair case needs a little remodeling and updating, for instance the carpeting did not cover up the wood molding on the stairs and paint was needed. The quality of the breakfast was just fair, in that the variety and quality of of the offerings were not up to the standards of other 4 star hotels that we have booked via Venere. Overall we loved the hotel and we enjoyed the experience immensly. The staff was very good, cordial and helpful. It would of been nice to have the main terrace open since it has a good view of the grand canal. The hotel's location next to the Piazzale Roma and the Train Station was excellent and the main reason that we selected the hotel.

When we asked for a canal view room, we didn't realize that a major ferry stop was almost directly across the canal. It was very noisy, plus we also had construction noise from the hotel. The rooms were comfortable, but there was hardly any closet space to hang clothing and no drawer space. The staff was very helpful. But we found it hard to believe that we had to go up to the fourth floor to retrieve ice at a four star hotel. (No ice buckets; they provide plastic glasses.) It didn't quite measure up to our expectations.

We stayed at this hotel during our honeymoon in November. It used to be a convent but they have renovated it into a hotel. The rooms we stayed in were very small. We actually switched rooms but the other one was just as small. The hotel is located across from the train station which was nice. Their is also a water taxi station just outside as well. If you are planning on going to St. Mark's it is on the other side of Venice. It was a nice hotel but I would only stay there again if I got a bigger room.

Excelent location inside Venice, mostly if you arrive by bus or train, excelent for train travelers due to close proximity to both. Good size bathroom, however, bathtub floor is not flat and very narrow and a safety hazard if you use the shower. Small bedroom, but we can live with that given the fact that is an old building that have been nicely remodeled. Telephone account should be detailed on the bill including numbers called, especially if you need them to get a refund back home. Excellent breakfast and waitresess. Would stay there next year if bathtub were safer.

This hotel is in a good location if you come in by train or want to leave by bus/taxi. It is on the upper most part of the Grand Canal and about a 30-40 minute walk from St. Mark's square. We stayed here after our cruise and the water taxi trip to the hotel was around 60 Euro. The hotel's rooms are quite small; however, we had a canal view and it made up for the size. The people are very friendly in the hotel and the area around it is quieter and not as touristy as the other hotels in the center of Venice. I would recommend this hotel.

Although the room was very spacious and comfortable, the decor was dreadful. The attempt to create an old italian renaissance feel has not worked although great effort has been put into it. The restaurant was closed the day we were there and only opened for breakfast. There was no explaination for this. Maybe it is always closed in the evening. But there are plenty of local restaurants, this being the centre of Venice. The air conditioning in the room was insufficient. (It was a very hot day). The hotel has a super location on the bank of the Grand Canal, very easy to find. The rooms were huge. We would not return to this hotel however, mostly because of the awful decor.

Our room was slightly on the small side, but exactly as pictured on the website. The only window had a view into the courtyard area. The bathrooms were spotless and modern. Well located hotel offering a clean but small room. Fair price. Staff were not particularly helpful and misled us on a complimentary trip to a glass blowing factory, which resulted in a private boat from the hotel to the factory and a public water taxi return to the middle of no-where when we didn't buy anything. Also tried to overcharge us upon departure.

Overall the stay in the hotel was very pleasent. The rooms were comfortable and the staff friendly. I was dissapointed with the photographs, especially those from the building outside which gave a very different impression, and the hotel location but I take responsiblity for that as I choose the Hotel. But as said on the whole a pleasent stay, I would use the Charlton again if it were in a different location.

The Hotel overstates its closeness to the main attarctions, which revolves around St Marks square. It is not a 10-minute walk, maybe a run!. The hotel is on the grand canal, so it is noisey, but its location is opposite the train terminals, a boat termainal and the main drop-off point for vehicles and people etc, so in that respect it is close to ammenities, but not to the attactions.
How to reach Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal
