I had a really great stay here. The room was spacious and basic but clean and comfortable. in fact This room slept four and I was alone so had lots of room which is quite rare in Venice. Also had luxury of a bath! Staff were friendly and helpful. It was low season so price was very good value for money. I would definitely stay here again. And recommend it for a budget but comfortable stay in beautiful Venice. It is also only a few minutes walk to piazzalle Roma and the transport links which means it is always easy to find once you have got lost in the back streets as piazalle Roma is always signposted all round Venice. It's also not far to walk with your bags when you first arrive. Leaving you free to rapidly get out exploring. Thanks for a great trip!

This wonderful hotel and staff exceeded all expectations. The room was spacious, clean & comfortable. The view from the windows was awesome, overlooking the water. The staff, especially Antonella, was very helpful and met every request we had. It is located right on the Grand Canal and close to a vaparetto stop. It is just a few minutes walk to the airport bus and train stop, and to the cruise ship docks. I would highly recommend this hotel. We will stay there again when we return to Venice.

We enjoyed the location, the friendly staff and the great breakfast in the beautiful garden. We'll come back. The hotel is in need of renovation; some of the hotel rooms including the one I was in are dated with very old furnishing.

We stayed at the Canal Walter last week, travelling with 2 teenagers, so we booked the "quad" room. The room was adequate, with 2 singles and a double taking up most of the floor space. Room was clean. Hotel is located directly across the Grand Canal from the Train station. (the web directions make it confusing). Good selection with the breakfast. Nice touch eating in an outdoor patio area. Wifi is sold by the 30 minutes $2E, 1hr $3E. The St Mark's Square area is walkable in approx 35 minutes, if you don't take the water taxi. one drawback is no elevators. Be prepared to lug the suitcases up the staircases unless you can get a ground floor room. I.F. Aug 4, 2011

We stayed 3 nights and found the location very convenient. Very close to the Cruise Ship docks, as well as the Train Station. Water buses got us further into the heart of Venice with ease. They staff were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was well stocked and meet all our needs. They even made specialty coffees for us! Having never been to Venice, we received the level of service we anticipated and were not disappointed.

Nice location. Close to bus stops & Santa Lucia train station. However, during the winter (December), the water will rise and go into the hotel & you can smell the sewage. Don't forget to bring rain boots (I didn't and it was a bitch). We got a room with canal view-very nice.

We were given a nie quiet room at the back which we requested. The only noise was from doors closing in the hallway. We appreciated being able to store our luggage at the hotel both befoe checking in and until we wanted to leave the area. The room was charming and old world just what we wanted. The young lady at rception was kind and helpful.

The people who work at the hotel were kind, helpful and the included breakfast was good. The location was great being just across the grand canal from the train station. However the hotel is more like a pensione or a 1 star. It is noisy, old, bathroom was dirty and not worth the 225€ we paid in mid June 2011. Will not stay there again. Does not include free wifi internet

I will never go back to this hotel. The rooms are old, not well cleaned and the bathroom has mold on the ceiling. Service is very poor. No elevator and nobody to help to take the lugagge to the room (second floor with my mother 70 years old). The garden is a joke! Plenty of trash accumulated in it... and the quality of the breakfast "buffet" is bad.

Venice is really expensive and this hotel was as expensive as much nicer accomodations we had elsewhere in Italy. The staff was great. If the lobby was cleaned up a little, the overall ambience of this hotel would be much improved. The room was fine - clean but tiny. The breakfast was continental - no eggs. In the future I will always ask about that specifically because it is an indication of how good the breakfasts are.

A nice Hotel close to the Train station and the Bus station which was important because our suitcase was very heavy and going through a lot of bridges with it would have been really exhausting. The room was large enough and really warm! The bathroom very nice and clean! The breakfast tasty and anyone can eat as much as he wants.

We had an excellent stay at the Hotel Canal & Walter. Breakfast in the garden was wonderful. The location was perfect in proximity to the train station and the buses to the port. We were given the room overlooking the Grand Canal and enjoyed the view and the breeze immensly! The room decore is a little older but it just added to the ambiance. Perfect! Price was in line with other hotels in the area. Yes...no elevator (no problem for us).

Positive: good position, large rooms, reasonable price. negative: the staff is very rigid - we have had to live at 4.30 A.M. and, instead of our paid breakfast, their were not able to give us anything "to go" but just a poor coffee... 'we have never had such a demand, sorry' over all, might be a good location for travelers or for a short stay, being close to the train station and to Piazzale Roma; to visit Venice I definitely recommend a more central hotel.

As many other travelers have indicated, this property is conveniently located walking distance to the train station. Easy access to the immediate area without feeling "lost in the maze". Along with several others, this was a "stop over" place before departing on a cruise ship. However, we would not marginalize this property as only for one night stays. Our stay was in late October, so fortunately we did not need to rely on the air conditioner which really did not work. This hotel was a very nice 3-star and reasonably priced for its excellent location.

My friend and I stayed in a double room, and our window was facing the main canal. The hotel was small, no elevator, furniture is old but the truth is that it added to the overall Venice experience... We loved it! Bathroom was pretty standard. It is understandable that most of the hotels around the area, including the Canal and Walter, have an old structure and have been in business for many years. But what I didn't like was the fact that the room that we were assigned with seemed to have the kitchen vent connected to it , therefore unpleasant smells from the kitchen invaded the room and bathroom. Also the bathroom tub was not cleaned properly. But I also have to say that the staff from the front desk was extremely nice and helpful . They definitely made the stay a bit better. Thanks!

I was tremendously inconvenienced by Hotel Canal & Walter's inability to break a 500 EUR banknote when I was paying my bill (70 EUR). It is unacceptable for a business of this type to not have change or to be able to assist customers in this regard. Access to Internet has become an essential part of staying in touch with family and business. I would have enjoyed my stay considerably more had there been wireless Internet access, even if it were limited to the Lobby area. A walk-up computer was available in the lobby, but only at a considerable cost.

Stayed 2 nights in a room overlooking the canal. Nice, but noisy at night as that part of the canal front is a walkway into the rest of the island. Very easy access to the station and pleasant walk from there to other places on the island. Room was old fashioned and small, but fine for our purposes. The staff were helpful and the breakfast was good. Fairly good value - as Venice goes, but Venice is an expensive place.

This is my worst hotel experience ever. For the price we were paying this so called 3 star which was actually a 2 star hotel - stated by the Venice Tourism Board Official Classification Certificate on the back of the room door (Venire please change it to a 2 star!!!) we were able to stay at a real 3 star which was much cheaper and didn't look like a hotel that had not been maintained for 20 years. The breakfast was pathetic.

I thought that for the price the hotel, rooms & breakfast could have been worlds better. It was a little hard to find the hotel, they could do a better job advertising the actual house number on the outside. Meal in the morning was kind of poor, not too many choices. Room was clean but small as was the bathroom, did have a "window" to the channel but you couldn't get it open. Had some language problems when checking in & out though we did manage to make ourselves understood. We were charged for the room before departing on our trip then they "charged" card again when we departed the hotel, luckily there has only been one actual charge to my card...that was a big misunderstanding between what the website said & what the desk clerk actually told us.

3 nights in March--a wonderful stay at this very typical little hotel. Flying solo, the room 311 up three flights was just about perfect for my needs. Two shuttered windows looking out back, better than the canal view, considering. Birds singing at dawn; bread rising. Perfectly modern bathroom with a window hatch for ventilation. Large, comfortable bed suitable for a couple. Convenient for the train station, a big deal here as you must haul your own stuff; backing into a student quarter in the Dorsoduro, inexpensive panini and tramezzini and good wine by the glass, as well as morning coffee. That counts because the breakfast room serves Nescafe, not home-brew. But that's where you want your coffee anyway if the local scene is what you're after. I liked the simple, marble-topped writing table in the room, local in feeling like all the furniture. I will bring my wife and daughter here next time. Complaints by US tourists are way out of line. This is as much as you need from a hotel in Venice.

Room was a bit small for mature family of 4 but it is what we expected in Venice at this price range, from the information we gleaned from others and previous experience. Being right on the Canal with a view was fantastic but this also meant that it was very noisy, with canal water traffic and pedestrian traffic. It was easy to find and access from the train station, though dragging bags up stairs can be exhausting! It was a great way to experience the life of Venezia depite the noise. Furniture was aged "antique" but interesting.European breakfasts were adequate but could do with some imagination and perhaps a smile from the staff.Having said all this, overall good value for money considering the location in Venezia.

The location is good, right on the grand canal. The bus stop and train station are close. Breakfast was a typical Italian with a good selection. Good location but overpriced. Breakfast lady would not bring out pastries the second morning until (we) the Americans left. She made some insulting remark about Americans and was very unfriendly. In Venice, for a 3-star hotel, I expected a small room and no elevator. However, for the price, the hotel should provide decent bedspreads, clean walls, and a shower curtain. The shower was visibly moldy with obvious smell. These things can be dealt with no matter how old the building. The view of the canal is good, no noise from train station but there is noise from constant foot traffic. Exterior entrance view of the hotel is awful, almost scary at first sight, but hotel is larger than it looks with a good breakfast room.

This hotel was great simply based on the ease of access to the main train station and the main vaporetta station. Their are several restaurants within a short walk that are excellent and it is only a 20 minute boat ride and 30 minute walk to St Mark's square. A little pricey but well worth it.

Our stay here was quite satisfying. The room was spacious and clean and the small garden at the rear for breakfast or socializing was a wonderful surprise. Hotel staff was helpful and courteous. We stayed on two different occasions at the hotel. Our first room was so small that I had to go outside just to change my mind. The second room was better. Overall, I would definitely return. The location was superb as it relates to ease of transportation. We saw so many people of all ages and sizes hauling their numerous luggages around Venice. It was so simple to reach this hotel from the bus stop. I highly recommend it for ease and simplicity. It is not fancy by any means, but it was very comfortable, expect the showers.

I would NEVER recommend this hotel to anyone. We reserved and received a confirmation for a quad Grand Canal view room and ended up with an inside room with no view. I reserved this room nine months in advance and they had plenty of time to let me know I would not have the room I requested. The air conditioning was non existent. The window was broken and repaired with duct tape (I am not kidding). After you take a shower a very strong sewage smell comes out of the floor drain and it is so strong that you have to leave the room. We ended up putting wet towels over the floor drain in order to stifle the smell. If you want a nice stay in Venice, avoid this hotel!

WE stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel is in a very good location. IT was bars next door and the ferry stop 2 minutes walk away. I suugest you book a room with a canal view, as our had a view of the rubbish bins which was not plesent. Everything wa fine apart from the breakfast. This was nasty with stale rolls, tinned fruit and hot milk for cereal. But apart from that it was fine.

My 3rd time to Venice. Easy to find from train station, but I won't stay at this hotel again. Far from San Marcos and no good resturants around the hotel. Customer Serivce very poor and the price is tooooooooooooo high for that hotel. Breakfast not good at all. I mean it was BAD.Pay little bit more and stay in San Marcos.

Nice hotel, very clean, close to rail and bus station. Directions from airport to piazzale roma. Buy ticket from booth at left of departures, blue no 5. This bus has space for luggage, 5 euros. Exit airport opposite departure. Bus stop across the road to the left. When you arrive at Piazzale roma. In the left corner the Vaporetta stop and the ticket office.Just to the right is a bridge. Go over the bridge and keep left. As you go around corner the grand canal is on your left. Go over the next bridge.Hotel is just over the bridge. On opposite side of grand canal is the railway station. Hope this helps.

This is sthe first time we have stayed at the Canal & Walter and it was as we expected it to be. There was everything we needed and the rooms were pleasant, alhtough one or two things were in need of repair. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet, although we would have preferred our coffee/tea to be much hotter than it was. This may be because we are English though! The supermarket (Co-op) nearby was very convenient if you wanted food to eat out. It was pleasant going into the centre via the Canal because it an enjoyable trip although sometimes rather crowded - only to be expected! I would recommend your hotel and we hope to come again some time.

We have closets larger than the room we were given. The smallest room I've ever stayed in. The worst part of the stay here was the "bites" my wife and I had in the mornings after waking. The first night I blamed the bites on bugs coming in from the open window facing the canal. The second night the windows were shut tight and again we woke up to many bites on our body. My wife wanted to complain but I just wanted to get out of there. We both realized we had been bitten by "bedbugs." GROSS! The red bites are still evident on our skin. We brought are suitcases home and sprayed flea spray on them. The sheets had not been changed while we were there either. The same spot was evident the next night on the sheets. As far as staff, Only the man at night was friendly. The women who worked the breakfast area was rude and acted like she disliked every minute of cleaning up after the visitors. Venice left a bad taste in our mouths. We were ripped off as soon as we got there. A woman and man offered to carry our bags up the steps so we could get to the other side. They then charged us about 55.00 dollars! They are con artists who prey on tourists. We were going to tip them, but the amount they charged was robbery. My crime was being foolish for not asking them "HOW MUCH" before accepting their offer. BE AWARE! Venice is the most expensive place I've ever visited and the food is not worth the price. You are paying the outlandish amounts because, "it's Venice". The water taxi was expensive and the first night they dropped us off a long way from our destination. We were responsible to catch a bus back. They need to tell people before they get on that they are going to be stranded without a way back. Very disappointing over-all.

The location was great - accross the bridge to the Train station, very close to 2 water bus stops. The breakfast garden was very pleasant. Rooms were small (but most are in Italy). The spreadsheets were not the cleanest.

Hotel on Grand Canal, pay that little extra and get a canal facing room and watch the world pass by. If coming by train you must be fit to lug cases(usally heavy!!) down train steps and up and over canal bridge to get to hotel only to find NO ELEVATORS (LIFTS).Once you have your breath back its worth every effort.Handy to everything in Venice.

Great location for people driving in, only a short walk from parking garages. Would recomend for anyone staying only a couple of days. For longer stays, I would stay further into the city. This area is more busy and does not have as much ambience.

Hotel is in great location. The price for quality is poor. The air conditioning doesn't work - it was near impossible to sleep at night due to the lack of air. If you opened the window, mosquitoes came in. There are no elevators. Friends of ours stayed about 2 min away in a beautiful suite, with air conditioning and three windows opening to the canals for less money. There was only one staff member at the front desk who could answer questions. The rest of them said to wait until her return.

I booked this hotel because of all the comments I read. It was what I expected. We were only staying for 1 night and did pay for a room with a view. It was worth it for us. The AC doesn't get turned on till May 1st so we slept with the windows open, it is a little noisy but it didn't bother us. The bathroom was alright. They have a shower in a tub, no shower curtain so the water does get all over the place. We were on the 1st floor so dealing with the luggage wasn't too bad. We lugged our luggage over the 2 bridges from the car rental, when we were leaving we lugged it to the train station only 1 bridge,80 steps per my daughter, it is a small workout but not bad depending on your health. We booked it for the location of the train & car rental. The staff was very nice and held our luggage for the day because our train did not leave till the evening. We met the nicest people & did spend 100 euro for the gondola ride in the evening. It was worth it. My daughter 11, had the greatest time. The hotel will send you on a water taxi to Murano to a glass company at no charge. They made a vase & horse in front of us. Then they take you to the showroom & follow you around. They want you to buy. We did buy some trinkets in there but when I got back to the Hotel the items were in the shop right next store at half the price. Don't know if it's the same quality, but was good enough for souveniors.

The welcoming and staff was excellent. They knew all kinds of intresting things about Venice and were eager to help with any problems or questions. Hotel also has a possibility to get a free boat ride to Murano island to shop some glass ;).. The location was excellent, it was easy to find from the railway station (Ferrovia Santa Lucia) and a Varoretto stop just a few blocks away. (Piazzale Roma)

The location of the hotel is close to the train station so the convenience is great. Keep in mind that from the train station to the requires walking up a bridge and carrying your luggage. The staff is the epitome of professionalism and very knowledgeable. It is a small quaint hotel that met my needs. It is not opulent or posh but sufficient and accessible.

The hotel that we stayed was very nice and the front desk clerks were very helpful. They stated the room was a canal view room and we had an outstanding view of the canal for a low price. The location was near everything especially the train station. A very short walking distance to restaurants and all the attractions in Venice. I would definetly stay at this hotel again.

A very lovely place to stay. We had a room that opened onto the Grand canal, down side was that the room wasn't sound proof. Breafast was lovely and the staff were great. A great place, close to the train station and the markets.

We really enjoyed our stay in Venice and the location of the hotel is the best for people with young children as it is in few steps from public transport stations. We loved the view from the hotel to the canals and the breakfast tabel was sufficient.

This was my worst hotel stay in Italy. I expected a small room as it was Venice but, in order to make as much money as possible they had stuffed two childrens cots (not even small singles)into one room with less than 12" between them and the bathroom door was up some stairs with furniture partially blocking it. The breakfast was stale and below standards. My window looked at the other windows. I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Coming off the train the hotel was across the river, so very easy to find! Considering it is very easy to get lost there, take a good map. We were on our honeymoon so we splurged on a water view and it was lovely. Having a water view is noisier with the boats, but it wasn't too bad. The room was a lot larger than we expected, which was a change from other European countries. Everything is pretty close in Venice, so we could walk anywhere from the Hotel. There is no lift but we were on a lower floor so that wasn't too much of a problem. We would recommend this hotel to our friends

We stayed in Venice for one night. The hotel is very nice and clean. The rooms are ample and decorated in the venetian style. The location is very convenient as although it is a bit far from the center it's very close to the train station and to a Vaporeto stop and anyway it's not hard to get to Piazza San Marco.

Excellent value small hotel opposite train station and very near bus terminal, important when you've luggage and not in the first flush of youth, with vaporetto stops virtually on your doorstep.Room was compact,to be expected in Venice, but spotlessly clean and we had our view[s] of the grand canal as booked.Good breakfast, friendly, helpful and efficient staff. We won't look any further next time we are in Venice.

The hotel is in a great location but the service recieved was not great. I was not expecting anything grand but when I called and asked for a canal view since this would be our first trip to Venice we decied to splurge and was very disapointed with what was recieved. We asked for directions at the front desk and he seemed as if we were bothering them also they wanted to sell us a map for 5 euros, the service was awful. But room and location were great. isabel2975@yahoo.com
