The stay in this hotel would have been good, if my bed did not break the last time I spent there. The hotel staff was unable to fix the problem at 2 am and afterwards accused me to have broken their bed by my behaviour. I paid the bill, but I feel very sorry that the manager of the hotel did not feel necessary to talk with me. Just the hotel staff, who have no power whatsoever talked with me, upon the instructions of their boss. The wooden cross beams disengaged from their slots and therefore did not support any more the mattress. No cross beam was broken. I feel very bad about that, and would I come again in Venice, I will pick up another hotel. The breakfast room is too small and you may have to wait to take your breakfast.

We were there in OCtober/08. There were young people, family, middle age couples. The room is small. You have to make space to fit 2 suitcases! Hated the bathroom. It stink a lot. I don't know if it was only ours or what. Location was good.

For the price I'd have expected a heater in the room. (Asking didn't help.)

A perfect location and excellent service in this lovely find of a hotel. Our room was very small, but decor was Venetian and we had just about enough space! It is actually very easy to find, just look on the map for the La Fenice Theatre and it is right by that. There is a little sign above a shop pointing down a side street. We would recommend it.

Very Poor directions on how to reach the hotel. SHould give more specific directions as to which street to take coming from the San Marco stop. Hotel only gave the courtyard name (instead of the street) which no one in Venice knows.

No tiene ascensor y estábamos alojados en un cuarto piso: con maletas esto es bien duro. La ducha está hecha para niños hasta de diez años. Es demasiado baja.

The rooms were small but they were exquisitely decorated. It really captured the feel of Venice. Past reviewers said the hotel was difficult to find, but I did not have any trouble. I was impressed by the staff; the lady at the front desk was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful in finding reccomendations for food, and places to visit etc. The hotel is a minute walk to San Marco's plaza and a really nice 15-20 minute Vaporetto (water taxi) ride from the S.Lucia Train station. the breakfast is your typical breakfast, bread, fruit, deli meats, coffee, juice, cereal.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Ateneo for four nights. We especially enjoyed our stay. The price was very comparable for the surrounding hotels and the location was wonderful (a quick 10 minute walk to San Marco square). The staff was very nice and very helpful. I would definately reccomend this hotel to a friend.

The room had two beds, as asked; it was very small indeed. There was barely room to move around; when we opened the bathroom door, it hit the bed. It would have been the perfect room for a single person (with a single bed placed differently). As it was, luckily my daughter and I get along well together and we managed the complicated manuevers needed to move around and place our luggage (one suitcase on the single chair placed in the only possible corner, the other in the wardrobe). There was no place to sit other than the beds, which were about 5 inches apart from each other, with barely room to move between bed and wall (we couldn't put the bed against the wall because of wall decorations). The hotel location is excellent, very close to La Fenice which was a major consideration for us. Breakfast was good and pleasant. Travelers should note that you can't get to the hotel without crossing at least 2 bridges (which in Venice involve going up and down stairs), and that the hotel has no elevator. Our room was on the 3rd floor.

Hotel Ateneo was excellent value for what we paid, we got more than we expected. Its location is brilliant for any major sight, and staff were pleasant and helpful! We will definitely come back!

The rooms here are a little small, but in all fairness, space is at a premium in Venice. The only issue we had was booking a water taxi to the airport. We were quoted $13 a person on the night before our departure. The next morning, we were told it would be $20. The only reason we didn't make a stink is that the direct trip to the airport is convenient. At that point we really didn't have a choice because we only budgeted enough time for the direct trip. It was pretty obvious that the desk clerk and taxi driver knew this and took advantage. This issue aside, the hotel was beautiful, with a great balcony right outside our room overlooking a canal (ask for the second floor). Beautiful antiques, chandeliers, etc. A little hard to find initially, but doesn't take long to get used to the location. I Would recommend this hotel.

It was quite difficult to find the hotel since there were no hotel signs on the streets leading to it. The room itself (double superior) was quite spacious but I was disappointed about the cleanliness of the room and bathroom. Moreover, in one of the wardrobes, ... there was a heating boiler, which turned on and off several times during the night. The breakfast was great, but too little for my appetite. Overall mark is GOOD for this price.

This is a great little hotel in the middle of Venice, its less then 5 minutes from San Marco square. The room is small, but for european standards its a good size. The bathroom was very large and clean. The room also had a mini bar with very reasonably prices beverages. The only complaint is the hotel is hard to find and the directions are not accurate,

Nous étions à Venise mi décembre 06. Le cadre était parfait, la chambre petite mais tout y était, trés propre et agréable. Un rapport qualité/prix parfait. A recommander pour un court séjour !

A very "cozy" little hotel with wall to wall upholstery. Public areas are small, and staff is confused and disoriented at times. Who could blame them in such a bewildering city. They made up for it with a complimentary boat ride to the isle of Murano(famous for its glass factories) and a free tour, of which could have been very costly. All things said, it was a quiet stay in a nice(expensive) back alley place... plan your time wisely...its an expensive city ($ X 2)

The room 302 was to small. Understand the building does not allow bigger space but you should consider to open the wall between two rooms to accomodate for moore convenience.

Nice hotel. A bit difficult to find initially, we did a few circles around the place from Piazza San Marco. The breakfast is a little bit on frugal side. But apart from that, the overall experience was very positive. Would definitely recommend it for people looking at a convenient location and not wanting too many frills.

Beautiful glass chandeliers throughout. Hard to find especially at midnite. Luckily we bumped into two young schoolgirls who led us through the maze of Venice like little fairies. Picture of the front door makes it seem like it's visible from the main walkways - but it isn't! It's inside a small courtyard. Enjoyed the adventure and the very friendly man at the reception desk at midnight. Opposite to what I read in another review.

We booked a triple and got what we needed. Room was of reasonable size. The bathroom was fairly basic but clean and new. Hotel was at a good location and very quiet, away from the hubbub of Venice and San Marco square. We thought the location was the best aspect of this hotel. Breakfast was basic but adequate. Staff was helpful and courteous. Except for the trauma of getting from the Valaresso stop on the vaporetto to the hotel and the front desk's inability to provide directions on the telephone, we had a pleasant stay at this hotel. Albeit, 300 Euros a night was a little extravagant. The bonus was the Teatro square near the hotel which is charming and has a nice restaurant to enjoy a quiet evening by the hotel.

A wonderful value for the money--we 4 American adults recommend Ateneo to any budget-conscious traveller. A delightful Venetian experience, including a common balcony in the hallway that overlooked a steady stream of gondolas below, and a cozy courtyard out front. Great location, very helpful English-speaking clerks, nice breakfast, and above-average cleanliness.

Finding the hotel was a bit difficult since only vague directions were provided. I had a pleasant stay overall. The place is very charming and the staff quite helpful (Someone actually carried my heavy bags up the stairs; who still does that outside of 5-star hotels?)

We got a very rough welcome in this hotel: the large room with view on on the canal we had booked was not available and we were offered a small room on the front of the hotel, with hardly any wardrobe, a tiny bathroom (washbasin + shower + WC in less than 2 square meters). We stayed only one night and cancelled the two other night. We paid 176 Euros instead of the 210 for the room we had reserved, but this small room was hardly worth it . for the next two nights We found for 190 Euros a very nice room at the hotel La Fenice which is very well located, 50 meters from the Ateneo

The hotel is very well situated and quite near the Marcus place. It is very clean, with friendly personal and really nice rooms. I would enjoy to come back. The only- very, very little- disadvantage I found, was that for the breakfast I didn´t get enough bread/rolls, although I don´t eat very much. But everything else was really excellent and we enjoyed our stay at the hotel.

When we arrived at the hotel we were very dissapointed at the attitude and coldness of the man at reception and were pleased the following morning when he was not there! Apart from the intial worry that the whole stay was going to be horrible it transpired that the hotel and the rest of the staff were very pleasant and helpfull. Hotel was clean and ideally situated for the walks around Venice. I would consider staying there again but if I knew 'Mr Moody' was working during my stay, I would probably try somewhere else.

The rating of my overall stay is highly influenced by the fact that the price that I received from venere.com did not correspond to the one that the hotel tried to force me to pay. The receptionists accused and blaimed me for the confusion: "the office (italyhotel) is closed on Saturdays and this is your problem, not ours". I had the e-mail with the offered price (360 euros for three nights) with me, it had no effect on the receptionists. The hotel wanted me to pay 410 euros - they said that thay had no information of any offer or any special price. The service during the check out was very rude and impolite.
