This is a wonderful hotel, centrally located very close to museums and transit in Venice's "Greenwich Village", which is less touristy than Venice's other neighborhoods that are located right off the Grand Canal. It is very walkable and chalked full of cafes and the Biennale's summer exhibitions. Even in the the high tourist season the hotel and its surroundings weren't uncomfortably crowded. The staff is very welcoming and helpful. They arranged wonderful dinners for us at eateries that locals frequent that we would never have found ourselves. We will definitely return to Venice and stay at the Hotel American-Dinesen!

We've stayed at the American several times. We could only stay for one night this time, and they offered to put us into one of the adjacent apartments. The apartments are quite spacious and complete - decor is not as plush as one of the rooms - but I think it would be great for a small family due to the size and the small kitchen. The staff is always very gracious and helpful. The breakfast is good. The location simply can't be beat in Venice - it is quiet and yet near everything. We will certainly come back.

This is a lovely hotel in a quiet and convenient part of Venice that we prefer, after some 10 trips here.My wife and I will definitely return to this area and probably stay in this hotel again. The area and hotel capture the visual charms of Venice so well. The hotel staff is very simpatico and the hotel has all the advantages expected from a small hotel. The name is unfortunate but all nationalities, including many Italians, seem to stay here.

Very nice hotel, staff and location. The rooms are beautifully decorated in Venetian style, with details like hot water for tea and coffee. Very easy access by waterbus, however it is good to keep in mind that Venice is not an easy place to walk when one has too much luggage. Breakfast was delicious!

The Hotel Dinesan is a charming hotel on a quiet canal. The desk staff were always helpful and courteous. The wait staff in the breakfast room were accommodating and the food was very good. It is such a pleasure not having to leave your hotel in search for breakfast~ a definite plus! The boat ride out to Murano Island to see the glass factory was complimentary by the Hotel. You are then given a private tour of the factory and of course, shown many beautiful pieces for sale. I would definitely stay here again if ever back in Venice.

The hotel is close to both Accademia and Zattere vapoletto stops, and thus quite conveniently located. Hotel is on the canalside, and can be reached by water taxi directly from train station or Marco Polo airport. The rooms are small, but in most hotels in Venice you have to do with tiny rooms. Staff was competent and caring. They had suggestions regarding what to do, and was helpful in giving directions, etc. I enjoyed the stay here, but the only snag was the price. Even with the excellent location, 280 euros per night seems a little expensive. Especially when the shower stall you got is so tiny you have to be mindful of how you maneuver inside. All in all, if you do not have to worry about the expenses and prefer smaller hotels to large chains, then this hotel may appeal to you a lot. I'd love to return to this establishment if I can find a better room rates.

My daughter and I stayed for the first time in Hotel American Dinesen. It was easy to find on a charming street with a canal, thus direct access for a water taxi, and within 3 minute walk from a vaporetto stop Accademia. Our room was in the a new modern section accessed through a closed alley on the side of the main building. It was reached after two steps through a spacious dining area with a kitchenette (with refrigerator and microwave). We found it quite comfortable and nice, clean and tastefully decorated in modern style in beige and reds and subtle metallic gold wall. We were surprised to learn that our room (#5), larger than I expected (with twin beds), had use of the kitchenette. We found it very convenient for breakfast(ours was not included in the price - rather steep)and for lunch. We could also relax in a pleasant courtyard, on modern wicker furniture, directly accessed from our room. Electrically controlled roll down shutters (from inside the room)covered the door and the window at night. No one else used the kitchenette or the courtyard during our stay, though there was at least one couple in this section of the hotel. The bathroom was very nice and sufficiently spacious with large sink, bath and tiled shower, bidet, places to hang towels and a shelf to put our cosmetic bags under the sink area. Slippers were provided as well as extra pillows and blankets. Room temperature control was functioning. There was a water kettle for tea or coffee in the room and porcelain cups and saucers. Closets and drawers were sufficiently large. There was a safe in the closet and mini bar fridge, which we did not use. Perhaps the only thing I missed was a reading light. The room light was sufficiently bright for reading, but if one person wanted to sleep, atmospheric orange lamps by the bed side did not give enough light for the other person. Wi-Fi was available in the room on asking. On the whole it was a perfect place and nice people.

My wife and I were celebrating our 50th Wedding Anniversary and our son suggested this hotel having visited it at Xmas although he stayed at the Bel Arti, plus the good reviews on website. We found it well located close to the Academia vaporetto stop & overlooking a canal which from our balcony we found most interesting. The room was beautifully furnished and the en-suite small but excellent. The staff were very pleasant and the Breakfast very generous and we appreciated that staff brought pots of coffee/tea were to the table. Our only very slight criticism would be the minimal Public Rooms and the lack of Toilet facilities on ground floor. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Make sure you study the map before you attempt to find this hotel. The address alone is NOT sufficient, even with a GPS. Its location near the Accademia stop is convenient but a bit out of the way ( 11 or so stops from the train station ). The hotel is clean and the wifi works well but the staff was often curt and the rooms didn't quite live up to the price. Air conditioning worked ok and there is no elevator.

The hotel is in a wonderful area. We stayed in August when 3/4 of the merchants are closed by 6:00 or closed for vacation. The evenings the area was rather desolate. We thought that we were booking a junior suite which is rality was a quad with 2 cots. The rooms need updating, rather dusty. The bed coverings and wall covering were dingy. Our room was on the 4th floor of a 3 story walkup hotel???? The front desk recommended 2 restaurants which we enjoyed and were helpful attending to our needs. We needed to leave the hotel at 5:00AM for the airport and they went out of their way to serve us breakfast

Superb location in Dorso duro region on quiet canal leading onto Grand Canal. Midway beween Accademia and Guggenheim Galleries. Perfect for our romantic getaway for 2 nights. Very easy access to everywhere - 2 mins walk to Zattere, Salute and Accademia vaporetto stops. Rooms decorated to a good standard with lovely little balcony overlooking the canal and also Grand Canal. Public internet access was useful as we had to reschedule some of our museum bookings due to a strike ( naturally!) and we were able to email them to reception for printing. We will definitely stay here next time we visit Venice and have recommended Hotel American to friends and family.

A great little hotel in a great location. Easy walking to any major site but in an area not quite as busy and crowded. Our room was small for 4 people but we had asked for canal view so it was not their biggest room. It was a good tradeoff however as we had a lovely view of the small canal right in front of the property and a great view of the grand canal and even the tower of St. Marco. We were in the room in the front on the top floor, with a tiny balcony and lots of windows and light. A vaulted beamed ceiling added to the quaintness of the facility. Service was generally friendly, with one of the staff in particular (I'm sorry I don't have his name) who was jovial, booked dinner reservations and made recommendations for us. Free internet in the lobby was a hit with our teenage sons. Breakfast room is pretty with a full, but cold breakfast. We took advantage of the "free" water taxi to Murano island for a tour of a glass factory. It is a one-on-one tour so expect heavy pressure to purchase. You are on your own getting back to the hotel. Hotels in Venice are very expensive for what you get compared to North America. Compared to other hotels in Venice it was ok value but not so when compared to other cities. For over $500 CDN a night, I would expect an elevator, for example. There was no elevator so the treck up 4 flights of stairs after walking all day is a chore. (A bell man was more than happy to carry luggage both ways). If we were to go back to Venice, we would stay again and definitely in that area of the city.

The Hotel far exceeded expectations. People comment that rooms tend to be small but we found it more than adequate, especially the bathroom. The little balcony overlooked a canal as promised and we delighted in seeing "life go by", from gondolas to garbage collection boats! Hotel perfectly situated, close to everything but away from the hectiness of the very "touristy" areas. Neat shops and good restaurants right there. Hotel personnel polite, friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay there again and can only highly recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy the delights and charm of Venice.

Our quad room was really small and pretty tired, and the second "bed" was a small not very comfortable pull-out couch. But, we had 2 tiny terraces with views of the Grand Canal and the lagoon which made up for the small room. No elevator, so be prepared to haul luggage. The location was great and easy to find. Just a short walk from the Accedemia vaporetto stop, so it was easy to get to everything. Great "floating" restaurant, La Piscine, about a 5-minute walk.

Excellent hotel in a great location. By not being next to San Marcos square it forced me to see more of Venice. It also is convenient to the water boat stops on both sides of the island (Academia and Zaterre) - made it real easy to come from the airport for 11 E (by water boat) to Zaterre, instead of 90 E (by water taxi). The location is great, about a hundred yards on either side (as the crow flies) from Zattere and the Accademia Bridge, which is very good for tranport, for one thing. Overall the stay was very pleasant. The receptionist on duty when we first arrived was rather vague and unable to give any particular recommendations for local bars or restaurants. The rest of the staff were considerably better. The room was comfortable, well appointed and spotless. Facilities included mini bar and automatic shutters which plunged the room into total darkness. The following morning we woke up expecting it to be light and it wasn't. It was actually already 10am!!! The canal view is a little overstated as you can see about an inch of the Grand Canal if you peer around the balcony, but nevertheless the smaller tributary outside the window was fascinating as we watched the Venetians go about their daily business. Having stayed in many more expensive hotels in Venice, this place is great value and particularly well located, saving on time when your own holiday itinerary is pressing.

The hotel is in a delightful area with easy walking to the Accademia Bridge, Campo Santa Margherita, Zattera, La Salute and other places of interest. We had our best meal at the restaurant next to the hotel, Cantinone Storico - try the sardines in onions with a glass of Pino Grigio - delightful. We enjoyed St Marks Square in the late evening, no crowds or pigeons, lovely atmosphere with the quintets playing around the square and some excellent classical buskers to entertain you on the walk there. The water taxi from Marco Polo airport was expensive (90 euros) but well worth it. A speedy blast across the lagoon to blow away the cobwebs and then a wonderful cruise through the canals to the front door of the hotel. A magical way to start our holiday. We hope to return to Venice and would be happy to return to the Hotel American.

I chose this hotel mainly from reviews on this site and was very pleased with the choice. Rooms 202 and 302 offer best views and space with lovely little balconies to step onto. We were pleased to be staying on this side of the canal as the crowds around st Marks were overwhelming at times. I was amazed by venice and thought it was spectacular -I really wasn't sure what to expect after hearing so many mixed views over the years. We had a room right on a canal off of the Grand Canal. Lots of windows that open giving a great view. The place is easy to get to from the place where the boats that go up and down the Grand Canal stop at but there is a bridge that needs to be crossed with 8-10 steps up and back down. When you have luggage with you this is a bit of a hassle. There is no elevator at this location so taking luggage upstairs is also a consideration. However, the hotel allows free use of a computer. This is a nice added feature. The location is close to St. Marks square. They gave me a 5% discount for paying in Euros and a discount card for future stays. I would recommend this place.

We loved Hotel American. Our room was beautifully decorated and would definitely recommend the canal view. The hotel's location was good - close to the Grand Canal and within a short walk to Piazza San Marco. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We would stay there again!

We had a lovely stay at the Hotel American - it was actually much nicer that we expected. The location was perfect, very easy to walk to every thing, and breakfast was generous and fresh. I would stay there again, for sure, and was by far the nicest place we stayed in Itay.

A fantastic small hotel, many rooms with canal views and only a short distance from some major places of interest. The staff were very helpful and spoke good english. The room was very tastefully decorated in a traditional style that completely suited the environment and gave a feeling of elegance. The breakfast room was clean and functional with a good selection of food and drink. Overall we were enchanted by the hotel, its quiet location and the relatively cheap prices for that part of Venice in high season.

The location is wonderful. The hotel is in a very attractive part of Venice and yet not too busy. The size of the hotel is perfect. The rooms are nicely decorated but a bit small. Good closet space though. The staff is friendly and very helpful. Generally, there was a good atmosphere. Breakfast was always a job well done. i would stay there again.

We stayed in a family room at the top of the hotel , it was comfortable for the short stay that we had. The hotel is very conveniently located just a canal away from the academia bridge. Breakfast was plentiful, but no hot food avalible. With the Venice card 22 euros for 3 days of unlimited travel on the water and land buses, we found ourselves poping back to the hotel in the day to use the lavatory ( minimum charge is 1 euro in the public toilets)as we were so centrally located, and nearly all of the vaporreti(water buses) stop at the academia stop. Helpful friendly staff.

Nice hotel. Super friendly and helpful staff. Internet in lobby came in handy. When catching the water bus from train station avoid the local boat, too many stops. Wait for the one with only a few stops, yours being Academia.

Great location-- close walk to Piazza San Marco. Water taxi grand canal to "Acadamie" stop, walk toward "Guggenheim collection" over first small canal and go right. We loved our quad room for our family of 4. Beautiful. People were nice, price was exact. We didn't ask for much help while there, so didn't test the staff. Clean, and a lovely breakfast. They allowed us to leave our luggage in the lobby room while we toured am we checked out. Great! Would stay here again!

We had a great experience in Venice. The hotel was excellent, Marco at the front desk is very helpful. We had a beautiful room in best Venician style, overlooking a canal but very quiet with small balcony. Breakfast is decent but not great. And yes, the restaurant recommended by the hotel (same owner) is very pricy but excellent food. If you're not up to spending $200 for a couple then simply don't go. We highly recommend this hotel.

This is a charming little hotel right on the Rio San Vio located about equidistant from the Accademie and the Guggenheim. Our room overlooked the canal. There was some construction going on outside our window during the morning hours but otherwise the room was quiet and the view was marvelous. The hotel was very clean, charming and convenient.

Our stay at Hotel American exceeded all of our expectations. The staff was friendly and knowledgable. The location of the hotel is ideal...on a quiet canal not far from the Accademia Bridge. Our nonsmoking room was clean and always promptly made up daily. The breakfast was a pleasant surprise, with fresh fruit, breads, meat, cheeses and cereals to accompany the beverages. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone. It's worth the expense.

The Hotel is situated at one of the small canals, the furniture is very nice, the Quarter "Dorsoduro" a place where still Venetian live, so you find some very nice cafés close to the hotel. The single-rooms are rather small and don`t have a canalsight but the double-rooms are worth the price.

Water Bus strike the day we arrived so ferried to the door by water taxi, a wonderful start to the trip for our two children aged 13 and 15. Having stayed 4 to a room in several rooms in England we were expecting to be pretty squashed but were delighted to find a King Sized Double and two singles in effectively two rooms ajoined by an open arch. Canal runs right past the hotel at the front, our room to the side and rear but very quiet and electric shutters meant complete peace and darkness and good sleep. Meals for 4 from 20 Euros to 200 Euros within 20 meters of the front door. 2 mins to Accademia Gallery and Bridge, also 2 mins to Guggenheim Collection. Get a 24 or 72 hour water Bus pass at the Accademia Bridge and go everywhere including all the lagoon islands. St Marks the least appealing part of the city, quiet areas around the Madonna dell'Orto magical and the wide promenade of the Zattere near the Hotel and marvellous place for an evening meal. I would recommend this Hotel to families, a good continental Breakfast to get you Going, perhaps only missing somewhere for Dad to have a cold beer whilst the children seek out yet another fabulous Gelateria for a 10 p.m. treat.

This hotel was charming. The room and bathroom were very clean. The heating system and hot water were very important specially since it was snowing in Venice at the time of our stay (January, 2005). The staff was friendly and helpful. However, they did recommend a restaurant that we were not too happy with as the food was horrible and very expensive.

Difficult to fault the hotel. Excellent breakfast lovely room. My only grouse is that we were not advised prior to arrival that there was no canel view (for which we had paid an extra £100 only a building site as the canel was being repaired. After some negotiation we obtained a 10% discount although much more was being offered to potential clients on the telephone. Also we were not advised that if you pay cash there is a further 10% discount. It is not helpful being told this at checkout at 7 am. This does not mean I would not stay here again, I would, but I would know the questions to ask prior to the visit.

We had a wonderful four night stay in this hotel and the room was everything we could have wished. We paid extra for the canal view. The only problem with this was that when we arrived there was no water in the canal. Not the hotel's problem, it had been drained for maintenance. We were offered a change of rooms to a cheaper room but these tend to look out on very narrow alleys and we decided to stick to our original choice. It was not too smelly and actually quite interesting watching the progress of the maintenance work from our three balconies. The room was plenty big enough for a short stay and would have been very peaceful if it was not for the drunk who decided to sing to us in the early hours one night. I would definitely use this hotel again, highly recommended.

A very comfortable hotel. Good location, friendly staff, spaceous and comfortable room, convenient mini-bar, good breakfast. We stayed in one of the "family rooms" and it was more than adequate for two adults and two teen-age girls. Two complaints: First, the a/c was somewhat underpowered - we could not get the room cool enough. Second, it was extremely difficult to take a shower without soaking the bathroom floor - there was only a partial wall instead of a full shower curtain. In summary, I would definitely stay here again.

I found the hotel on the Venere list and in Froemmer's Venice guidebook. Despite the cost for Venice hotel price the room was a bargain. The rooms are beautiful. The hotel personnel really cater to its guests needs. I thought that being located next to the Academia Gallery was a great location. I would not think twice about recommending this hotel to my friends.

This is a great hotel if you want to be able to walk the city. It is right on top of the Accademia bridge and that makes it one of the few spots you can easily cross the Grand Canal. We picked this area because it is a little quieter, but still only a 5-10 minute walk from St. Mark's Square. The hotel is right on a canal and only a 1 minute walk from the water bus station. The room was small, but very clean. We stayed in 5 hotels during our trip and this was by far the cleanest. The staff was very helpful, the restaurant and free breakfast very nice, and the free internet access very helpful. At the bridge you can pick up the water bus to anywhere in town- and also have the Guggenheim musuem and several nice cafes/restaurants. Save yourself some noise and money and stay at the American- and walk to St. Mark's Square.

We had a very expensive room (300 Euro a night) for a Canal View - I'm not sure if the extra charge is necessarily worthwhile. Across the small canal in the mornings is where boats docked to unload groceries and supplies and it was very noisy. Also, I asked for recommendations on hotels from the concierge/front desk and they would only direct me to a single restaurant, Le Bistrot Venezia - we didn't go there but it seemed very touristy and not really worth the recommendation. Otherwise, I think the hotel was great, it was in a fantastic area right near the Accademia vaporetto stop.

This is a lovely hotel in a great area of Venice--away from the crowds, with some great restaurants in the area and the Zattere walkway along the water. We were traveling with our 2 children and had requested 1 quadruple room. Instead, we got two very small rooms close together which had some benefits. For the price and location, we had a great stay. The hotel had some great restaurant recommendations and was extremely accommodating with allowing us to leave our luggage and use their public areas until we took our overnight train.
