We were at a wedding close by and The Alex was perfectly situated for this and for our stay thereafter. The rooms were clean and cool. The hotel is sort of midway on the Grand Canal. The breakfasts were adequate. The owner / manager friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay.

The only real drawback is that there's no air conditioning. The place is beautiful, the rooms are very clean and nice, the breakfast is traditional Italian and the lady at the reception is very charming.

I was doing a 4 day trip with my 3 kids (9..12) on short notice to venice. Basic room with one double and two single beds. Beds were very good. Small table, one locker. Bathroom with shower - quiet small but ok. Breakfast typical italian (basic) but good quality (fresh brioche and panini). Recpetion was not assisted when we arrived - had to call and wait a few minutes. Besides that very charming, nice and helpful lady. Location AT the way form railway station to Rialto bridge - therefore a lot of people moving between 24 and 6 oclock (regularely during night noise making idiots...). A lot of nice restaurant around, small super market opposite. Nice stay for people who are out in town all day/night - not so cool for people who need a lot of hotel comfort.

I suspect this hotel has given itself favorable reviews. There is no way the majority of guests rated this hotel an 8. It is cheap, with a convenient grocery store and resteraunt right outside the door but that's it for positives. On the downside, the rooms are tiny (as in hard to find some place to put your suitcase and still be able to open the door tiny). We ordered double beds for two people and got two single beds with no way to pull them together because the room was so tiny. There is no AC (conveniently ommited from the hotel's description). Bring earplugs. I have been to bars that are quieter between unruly guests and street noise. The breakfast was a joke--bread, jam and coffee. No eggs, cheese, meat, fruit, anything. Just bread. By the time, we spent 20 euros on breakfast, we were in the ballpark of the nicer hotel we moved to after our first disappointing night at the Alex.

Good place, well located and easy to find. Rooms are clean and quiet. The lady that takes care of the place is very nice and kind. There is a market just in front of the Hostel (since it's not really a hotel, it's a hostel). the only bad thing i could say is that they turn off the wifi at 23h, besides that is great place for the money.

The hotel is rather old in terms of facility. Several rooms on the same floor share one shower and one bathroom. However, the location of the hotel is excellent. Across the street is a big supermarket called Bally's, where you can buy cheap water, fruit, food etc. This is crucial for an expensive place like Venice.

Although a little hard to find, the location of this hotel is incredible, with the duomo literally on the doorstep! the staff were really friendly and spoke great english. there's frescoes on the ceiling (!), the rooms are really clean and spacious. I didn't mind the shared bathrooms, they were also spotless and as the hotel itself was pretty quiet we never had to wait around for a shower. Look at the recommended restaurants list in the hall as well, it was how we found some really good food!! Me and my friends were travelling all over europe, and this was definetly the best place we stayed at!

English: Nice hotel. Simple but clean. A lot of families. The lady of the hotel speak many languages: at least french and english. Comfortable noisy beds. Bathroom and toilets on the floor shared by 4 rooms . There is a sink and a bidet in the room. Our room was on the side of the street, but there wasn't too much noise. No television. When you are in a place as Venice, you don't spend your time in the room, so you don't need television. In front of a little supermarket: very practical.

We had a huge room (sink and bidet, toilet 10 ft away, shower one floor down - all very clean) overlooking the narrow streets. Exceptional value at under 50 Euro/night. 10 minute walk (several small bridges) from bus/train very near Frari Church (google map worthless). In the heart of Venice, yet quiet. Great supermarket across the street and bar/restaurant next to it. Saturday nights can be pretty noisy in Venice near bars, so you may want room on high floor - no elevator but nice stairs. Breakfast minimal typical Italian. Manager is very helpful and spoke fluent English. She even saw us off on departure day.

The hotel was very nice. The street it is located on is very quite. The only problem I had was finding the hotel. Don't let this scare you away, everything is hard to find in Venice. Once you figure things out, it's very well situated. The host was friendly and spoke good English. For this price you can't beat this hotel in Venice. It is located several block from the nearest bus, taxi and train station; for this reason I would not recommend bringing children who cannot carry their own luggage.

Alex hotel, is a very cosi place managed by a very kind madam and his son. The rooms are decorated with nice old fashioned cupboards and stuff. And the localisation is fantastic for those who want to be in the old venice and not next to crowded touristic place. It is a quite sector of the city and within 3 min you get to the beautifull church and it's square called Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari. I highly recommand this quality place which prices are low compared to what you can found.

We booked Albergo Alex the night before. There was a mix up with the reservations (not due to the Hotel's fault) and we were placed in a similar accommodation. We didn't come to Venice to view a hotel room - there was so much to see outside of the hotel. Bottomline was that the hotel was clean, and in close proximity to the Rialto Bridge and about 15-20 mins walk to Piazza San Marco. Caution to those who have never been to Venice before - this hotel is on a well traveled walking pathway from both the train station and Piazzale Roma (car parking) but you can get lost Very, Very, Very easily if you decide to walk to it. Best advice is to call the hotel desk and follow their directions to use the waterbus system and they will meet you at the waterbus stop. Plus, that would beat having to drag your luggage up and down all the stairs crossing all the canals.

The staff at Hotel Alex were very accomodating and helpful. She was able to reccomend a few places to eat that were close by, and one of them turned out to be great. There is a market across the street that is open till 8 or 9 that is very, very convenient. Breakfast was sufficient and the hotel was all that we could ask for considering the price. Recommend it to singles, couples, or small families.

Hotel Alex was not a hotel, it was a disgrace. The bed was broken, could not sleep. No air conditioner, no circulating air, one electric standalone fan per room, not enough. The mattress dipped almost to the floor. Disgusting stay

There is apparently nothing to be particularly excited about this hotel, however it was more than adequate for the price asked (45 euros/night for a double room in February). The size of rooms was actually quite a nice surprise for this price category. The furniture is also at least sensible. Bring your own soap/shampoo though (but the towels are provided). Didn't check their breakfast (it is probably quite obvious what should be expected:), but there is a small bar just accross the street and of the type that is more oriented to the locals. You have your own key for street doors, still they don't seem to be that keen on real late comings or goings - extra shutters are put in place later at night.

This hotel is well situated being on a ten minute walk from the bus terminus and yet right in the heart of the city. The hotel has a unique charm with a lost individual identity and infact our stay here really added to the awe inspiring historic city, we loved the hotel. If you are used to insisting on all the modern conveniences such as tv and hairdryer in your room then you may wish to reconsider your choice, but for us the hotel could not have better and lived up to expectation. Only small criticism is that the towels for showering were small. The breakfast was good and we recommend you consider the hotel as it represents good value for Venice and its mood reflects the city well. You are opposite to a small supermarket as Venice isnt cheap should you want anything and also there is a vaperetto stop close by on the grand canal. It is a pity such hotels are not found easily anymore, it is very much what you hope a trip to Italy may offer and I recommend it to the discerning visitor.

We stayed for two nights as part of a touring holiday, the Alex is a good tourist hotel at a bargain price for Venice, it is in a good location with ample reasonably priced bars and restaurants nearby. The rooms and general areas are not modern but who comes to Venice for modern and who comes to Venice to stay in a hotel room all day? The staff were wonderfully polite and spoke good English, the breakfast was simple but sufficient. If you come here with simple expectations then you will have a nice surprise.

This was our least favorite place to stay in a two month visit to Europe. The room was very nondescript, not particularly clean, and the beds were not comfortable. It was a noisy location at night when people were walking past, though I cannot blame the hotel for this. I would be more inclined to splurge and get a nicer place next time. The breakfast was good--coffee and fresh croissants and bread. The man who runs Hotel Alex is very nice and accomodating. However, he seems to be in need of additional employees, as he had to be elsewhere during the times we arrived (waited about 30-45 min) and checked out (waited about 20 min). The location was fine, though your directions weren't all that helpful. It was much closer to walk from the Port rather than taking the vaporetto, and less confusing as well.

We liked: central location, kindness/friendliness of staff, affordable cafe across the street (probably the ONLY one in Venice), grocery store across the street we did NOT like: the bed bugs, the dirty room (cigarette butts & dust bunnies), the broken shower head and mildew in the shared shower, sandpaper towels, the lack of soap in dispensers(bring your own),the bread rolls, jam, & coffee "breakfast" (bring your own additives to this "breakfast" Overall, it was the best place we could afford in pricey Venice...if you can afford better, go somewhere else. ps. it's only a 15 minute walk from the train station- good location

There's no lift!! Too tired if you have to bring your big baggage up the stairs. But the hotel is in a good location, just 10 mins walk to the station, and very near the city. Very welcoming innkeeper. Very clean. Very comfortable bed. My daughter and I were visiting for 2 days. The breakfast was simple fare with very fresh rolls and pastry. If your looking for somewhere to lay your head for cheap you've found the place. cheap is all it has to offer. im not going to insult them the hotel was clean and appropriate for the price. But come on a hotel that has a curfew of 12:30 is unreasonable. i understand its a family run business and they dont want to be awake all night.. get a night porter. Good hotel to get your footing for 1-2 nights but then move on.

What a gem of a hotel! We arrived 2 hours early but were well received and allowed to relax in the lounge area chatting to other guests and to leave our luggage. We had booked a triple room but one of our children was not with us and so they reduced our bill accordingly without any request from us, which was excellent. The rooms were beautifully decorated in venetian style and so elegant, with excellent facilities. Our room overlooked the main street so was a little noisy at times as the town clock can be heard chiming and the church bells are rung several times a day but it all added to the charm. The vaporette stop is a very short walk from the hotel but you do need to purchase a ticket first as there is no ticket office there. The shops are numerous and sell all manner of artifacts at reasonable prices and there are sign posts to all major places of interest. I thoroughly recommend this hotel and only wish we could have stayed there longer.

Exceptionally nice hotel in a beautiful location in the city, that for us was an ideal compromise between accessibility (about equidistant from the station, the Rialto Bridge and Fenice Opera House), and was close to a main artery of the city (you can get to within 100 yards of the hotel by following the 'Per Piazzale Roma' signs), but which was in a beautifully unspoilt and quiet part of the city whose services were geared more towards Venetians than tourists (so the businesses around it were tasteful and the prices of meals etc were moderate, while the quality was good). There is a small supermarket over the road, which meant is was easy to buy provisions to make sandwiches etc in the middle of the day, and there was a wonderful old-fashioned bakery about 300 yards away where you could buy a cappuccino and an excellent local pastry. The staff at the hotel were friendly and welcoming and their language competence and communication skills were excellent, and the room was very nice and exactly as shown in the photographs on the website (indeed I think we may have been staying in the actual room pictured!). The breakfast was excellent - fresh bread rolls, apricot croissants and a jug of coffee and hot chocolate - and the cleanliness of the room and the facilities was top class. But the most amazing thing about the Hotel Alex was the price - we paid about the same price to stay slap in the centre of the most beautiful part of Venice (in carnival fortnight!) as we have often paid for average hotels in forgettable cities by the side of some faceless motorway in Italy, Germany - or even France, which is usually cheaper! We could have paid 2-300 euros a night more for our room in other hotels in the city at the same time, but I do not think we could have got a significantly better hotel - or a significantly better location. I could not recommend the Hotel Alex more heartily, and I certainly intend to go back there again... and again... and again! Thank you for a wonderful

This was a very nice little hotel, and fairly easy to find. Actually, the maps on the website got us to the neighborhood and we stumbled upon the hotel from there. The owner is an older lady who speaks very good English and was very helpful. She is near the front desk all day and her son stays around the front desk at night. We stayed in a 4-person room, which was very neat and looked just like the pictures online. But it was not exactly roomy. There wasn't much extra floor space. There was a sink and mirror in our room, and the nice thing about the shared restrooms was the toilet and sink were in a separate room from the shower. There is a tiny supermarket across the street (or sidewalk I should say). There wasn't much noise outside of our window, so that was nice too. Breakfast consisted of coffee, and croissants with butter and jelly. Other things were available for an extra charge. Overall, we had a pleasant stay and had no complaints.

Excellent value for money at 50 euros a night, especially in Venice which is a rip off. The location was good, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The rooms were clean and nicely furnished. Stayed here for one night and would recommend this hotel. The people of venice were also very friendly.

Well located, at a walking distance from main attractions. The place was quite although it is in the main waking route. I strongly recommend to enjoy breakfast in a near by café instead. We use a shared bath which was ok but the towels smelled of cigarette smoke which was quite annoying.

This was a nice hotel in Venice. The woman that worked at the desk in the day was very nice and spoke English well. The coffee at breakfast was not very good because I think the milk was old or bad. The noise at night was quite loud because we were on a commonly used path in the area. The room itself was clean and decorated very charmingly. I would stay at this location again. One nice thing about the hotel is the location of a grocery store across from the hotel, that will help you save on food and drink.

Wonderful...I'd recommend it to anyone. The Italian woman who runs the place is very friendly and speaks a good amount of english. The place has a very warm, traditional feel and is ideally located near many shops and resturaunts. She also let us store our baggage after checking out and serverd a traditional breakfast or coffee and pasteries which was included with the room.

Great time.... brilliant location, easy walking access to all main sites and price was fantastic. Family run and very friendly service was excellent, we had a very late check in which went very smoothly. Email communication prior to arrival was also very good and informative. Couldn't ask for more if it was a 5* Hotel.

We made a visit to Venice in mid-December and booked 3 different hotels for each of our 3 nights stay. We were traveling light and thought this would be a good way to experience the different areas of Venice and hotels of different price ranges. We stayed at the Alex our second night and it was our least expensive accommodation at 50 euros for a double room with shared bath. We found it to be simple and basic yet still provided us with a large, clean room, a comfortable bed, and was well heated. As mentioned in other reviews, the walls are quite thin and can pose a problem if neighbors are noisy. Sharing a shower with two other rooms on our floor was not a problem as our room had a wash basin and bidet. Breakfast was adequate and the family members who run the hotel were helpful and welcoming. The location was excellent as we especially enjoyed our visit to the nearby Scuola Grande di San Rocco with walls and ceilings decorated by Tintoretto - a must see! Our other two hotels were more expensive (the San Cassiano at 70 euros - very nice, and the Wildner at 120 euros for a lagoon view, OK room with spectacular views) but gave us a good sample of hotels within our budget. We are agreed that the Alex is worth considering on a future visit because of it's good location and very reasonable cost for what you get.

Hotel Alex is a small hotel in the San Polo area and being in the centre of Venice is extremely handy for places of interest. Near to the Rialto Bridge and two excellent churches Dei Frari and San Polo. San Marco is in walking distance as is the station and bus station. I found it a bit difficult to find at first because of the network of windy streets but found out thst this is the nature of Venice and I loved discovering the little shops as I tried to remember the way. The hotel was very helpfui -emailing directions about buses and waterbuses. Everyone was very friendly. It was warm and cosy and comfortable. Breakfast included of croissants rolls jams and a hot drink. It's the first time I've ever booked a hotel on line and found the whole procedure easy inexpensive and a success.
