The hotel is located along a main street connecting Rialto and San Marco. So while it is very convenient, you can expect some street noise - though mainly during the day (thankfully, it was quiet at night). The hotel is in a charming old building. The walls may be a bit thin though. I could hear a bit my neighbour (eg when they flushed the toilet). But I was not too bothered by that. The staff was very nice. Breakfast was pretty abundant (by the standards of a small hotel). The coffee was good! I got a double room at EUR153 a night (prepaid), which may not be a super bargain, but acceptable considering that it was still high season and the central location of the hotel. All in all a good place to stay (unless you are very sensitive about noise).

Venice is amazing, and this hotel was wonderful! Although I rated the size of the rooms less than the other categories, I'm sure this is the norm for Venice. The hotel location was great - in between the Rialto bridge and St. Mark's square. The restaurant in the hotel serves up exquisite cuisine for a lovely dinner out. We would stay here again.

A very clean and friendly hotel right in the middle of all the tourist action, very close to both S. Marco plaza and the Rialto brigde. If you don't like being surrounded by thousands of tourists perhaps it isn't the best place to be, or perhaps June is the wrong month for you in Venice anyway. I still had an off-season price for the room, so i feel i had a very good deal. I liked the fact that they had free wifi (I brought my own laptop) and they made you a cappuccino at breakfast (although one of the lesser ones i had during my stay in Italy). If I ever return to Venice, I would definitely consider coming back to this hotel.

We were really satisfied with the hotel, though the room was small (actually - as I expected to be), and in general the price was high (but for Venice, it is reasonable). Especially many thanks for the genteleman at the receptionist desk, who guided us to a restaurant. In general, I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone, and will return for our next stay.

The Hotel was fairly welcoming... The staff were irrelevant to me for the most part, because My stay at the hotel didn't involve much interaction with the staff... but they seemed competent enough.. I love the hotel for it's location.. 7 minute walk from the St Marks Square... And the street that leads up to it is full of nice shops.. and good food.. and a very nice Gelato PLace... My room was a lot more spacious than I had thought it would be.. so that was a pleasant surprise... The breakfast was just about enough to get u to lunch. The only downside was that there was no help to carrry my luggage up 4 flights of stairs.. but then again.. the absence of elevators in Venice is a well-known fact... All in all.. I wudn't mind staying at the hotel again...

The staff at the hotel were wonderful! They gave great suggestions for places to dine and take in the ambiance of Venice. Though the room was on the top floor and very tiny, it was clean and had a nice sized bathroom. A wonderful experience and I'll be back!

This is one of the cleanest hotels I have ever stayed in, everything sparkled. Staff extremely pleasant and helpful especially the gentleman on the night shift, unfortunately I did not get his name. Hotel is in a great central location easy to reach by foot right off the vaporetto stop at Rialto. I had a single room on the top floor, which may explain why it was small. Some might complain that there is no elevator but I don't mind walking up stairs. The room was very quaint and very quiet. Breakfast was better than the average italian breakfast of a roll with jam. There was a small buffet with cereals, breads and ham and cheese, enough to satisfy most people. I have been to Venice six times and this was my favorite place. It is by no means luxurious or chic but it it is warm, inviting, comfortable and a great value considering the location.I will definitely stay here again when I return.

My only negatives are what other people have said - a lot of steps and no lift; and that some rooms are noisy. I was one floor above the ground floor bistro, with outside dining, and the noise coming up was annoying. On the plus side, the location is terrific, and the hotel itself is charming.

Great week, not to busy. Stairs would be a problem for those not so fit. Good breakfast to set you up for the day. Sky was not working, but with the financial turmoil that week it was a blessing to be in the dark!

The hotel is very well placed in Venice for exploring the narrow streets and the wide piazzas. It's so close to San Marco and very easy to find from there. We arrived at night on the Vapparetto from the airport and the walk across San Marco and into a narrow street and over the bridges to the hotel was magical. The staff in the Hotel were always friendly and helpful, the night porter being the nicest. The room we had was on the top floor and was perfectly clean. It was a good size with an alcove with a wardrobe and space for the bags, it was nice not to have to look at the bags during our stay. The decor in the room was a bit old fashioned but it is an old hotel and that is one of it's strengths, it is solid and quiet, you can't here any other guests going about their business. The bathroom was a good size, modern and clean. The breakfast was fine, nothing spectacular, but there was enough variety so you wouldn't have the same food every day. I would stay here again and would recommend it to all my friends without fear of the hotel letting me down.

The staff at Hotel Al Gambero are lovely, however I was very disappointed by the room considering how expensive it was. For this reason I would not recommend this hotel. You could definitely find a better and bigger room for the same price.

All the things others have mentioned are true. There's no lift, Venice is expensive, there is a little noise outside (but not much - we found up on the third floor it didn't bother us at all). But the porter carried our bags upstairs from the first floor reception and the staff were on the whole, very friendly and accommodating. The situation is right in the heart of Venice - it is literally a three minute walk to St Mark's square and only slightly further to the Rialto (with no bridges in between if you have heavy luggage/trolleys). It's true you're not getting a lot of space for your money, but Venice is very pricey, even for Italy and so far as I can see, the Al Gambero was very good value in light of that. The real downside of the city is shockingly poor food and wine at massively inflated prices; which is why many Italians say they 'snack' in Venice. If you can live with that, I'd say the Al Gambero is a good choice for your stay unless you have money to burn...

The only negative element about Al Gambero is the fact there are NO LIFTS! Our room was on the 3rd floor so a bit of a trek coming in and out the spiral stairs every day. We were aware of this bec I read other reviews but do keep it in mind when ur considering this hotel esp if you have accessibility issues. Having said that - the staff were competent, the location was excellent and the rooms were of adequate size. The furnishings of the hotel are quite charming it is described as a 'traditional boutique venetian-hotel' in their brochure and I would agree. Bathroom and room was neat as a pin so can't complain. Venice is a very expensive city (as is most of Italy) so this hotel was great value for money and a great place to hang your hat while you enjoy the sites and attractions that Venice has to offer.

We had 2 rooms at this hotel and they were very clean and spacious. We were on the side of the hotel that overlooked the restaurant below and we could get a small glimpse of one of the canals. We would watch the gondolas go by and could hear the singers and accordians from our room. When we closed our windows it really cut the sound out. The only issue we had was not knowing about all of the stairs. I had knee surgery 2 1/2 months ago and still managed. You had to go up one flight of stairs (approx 20 steps)to get to reception desk from the hotel entrance. Then 2 more flights up and then down a short hall and then 18 steep steps down to our floor. Our floor was great, a nice common sitting area and only 4 rooms on the floor and we had 2 of them. Luckily the porter was a big help with our 8 bags! (We were going on a 2 week cruise so lots of luggage) I think our wing was an addition to the original building. The beds were okay, not super soft. The included continental breakfast was very nice and the girl that was there was very sweet. We arrived before check in time and our room wasn't ready but they offered to keep our bags for us and did the same thing after we checked out. Free computer and internet use was nice. The location was just perfect...between Rialto Bridge and St. Marks Square. I would definitely stay here again but would be more prepared for the stairs depending on our room location. Pictures of our room and the view were too big to download. Willing to e-mail them if anyone is interested.

This was a nice hotel in a very good location. It was a few minutes walk from both San Marco and Rialto. It was very easy to get to, especially considering that there are many small streets in Venice to get lost. The price was a little on the high side, but it was worth it because of the location. The only downside that we can think of was the noise. Our room was right above a canal and a restaurant. In the morning you could hear dishes banging, people talking loudly, and boat motors. Also, the walls of the hotel are very thin. You can hear people talking in the hallway, the maids cleaning other rooms, and footsteps. This was the only concern we had with this hotel.

I could not believe the room and facilities offered for the price. As a single traveller I was given a double-bedded room with bathroom, mini-fridge, TV and tea/coffee on offer. The room was furnished beautifully and there was a canal view.Breakfast was terrific - a buffet with lots of choice. I think it was a superior hotel which probably does cheap offers in winter to fill up the rooms. The position between San Marco and Rialto was ideal. Definitely worth checking out.

The (single) room was very nice and calm. It was very small but included all the things needed. Stuff was very friendly and extremely helpful. The price/quality relationship seems just excellent - especially taking into account the location of the hotel. It is easily reachable from the Marco Polo airport without changes, just a few minutes from both Rialto bridge and St.Marco place. There are very nice restaurants near the hotel, so you will enjoy fish soup in venecian style with a glass of light wine. Anytime I go to Venice again, I will definitely book a room in Al Gambero!

The hotel is in a great location. The room was very clean, a bit small, but then it's Venice. The bed was a bit uncomfortable, but you're so tired, you don't notice it much. The hotel does not have an elevator and we were on the 4th floor and had to carry our luggage. Continental breakfast was adequate to start the day. Overall, the stay was comfortable as we didn't stay in our room much anyway. I was most impressed by the cleanliness of the room. Hotel was expensive, but we had already resigned ourselves that Venice is very expensive period. Had a great time. I would recommend this hotel as long as you don't have a lot of lugguge and can climb stairs if you get a room on the 3rd or 4th floor.

Another over priced Italy hotel. I booked my first night in a "canal view" room. It was on the canal but we had to lean way out the window to see it. The second night was not a canal view but was better and we still had a canal view. The night staff were rude and kicked me off the internet at midnight (using my own laptop). They were watching TV in the guest lounge at the time! All in all, very nice rooms if you dont mind the bathroom flooding. The hotel is immaculate and good location. The stairs are a challenge with luggage.

WHAT A GEM! My stay was a delight and there is nothing more one can expect or want from a stay in Venice than that which the Gambero has to offer: clean, cozy, elegant, in the heart of the city, romantic, great breakfast, nice staff, affordable, bathtub to soak those overwalked Venice-exhausted feet. AND, great gelateria right down the street. I live in Italy and was in Venice for a couple of days on a little get away trip and I know the city quite well. It is, unfortunately, as everyone says, a lion's den for horrible, overpriced accommodations (and everything else) run by apathetic and uninterested owners, so the danger truly is high to find yourself in a disaster situation. More so than in any other city, in Venice do NOT risk and go out on a limb or try something new: go with what is tried and true and testified for. TRUST ME. Given that it is in a city which allows so much possibility to mess up, or get swindled, a discovery like the Gambero is even more welcome and appreciated and crucial than it would be anywhere else. Highly, highly reccommend this hotel!!

This hotel is in an excellent location. However, they advertised that ALL rooms were airconditioned, and had NO air conditioning. I was stuck in this tiny, attic room on the 4th floor (5th floor in the States), and it was so hot! I was sweating every night, and couldn't sleep because I was so uncomfortable (and I am not an overweight person-I'm usually too cold). I was very upset that they didn't even have the advertised amenities. The restaurant downstairs was very good (though overpriced with miniscule portions). The service at the restaurant was excellent.

It's my first stay at Al Gambero. Its location is excellent for those who like to explore Venezia all-over by foot because it is almost at the centre point of the city. Moreover, it is extremely easy to access by those arriving by train or coach: after disembarking from the Rialto vaporetto stop just walk staight-ahead through Calle Bembo onto Calle dei Fabbri where the hotel situates- a mere 50 metres or so.Be aware that there's no lift ( it's a 4-storey building ).

We enjoyed our stay in Venice and in al Gambero. We were travelling party of 5 (2 kids)and we had ordered 2 bigger rooms with balcony. The check-in went fine and everything was ready though we got only one room with balcony (the other room was otherwise better)and the babycot was in the wrong room to our needs but who would have known. There is no elevator and the stairs are pretty tricky with luggage. Hotel could not offer adapter to regular european standard lap-top(which they promised to get for the next time). venere.com pages praised the restaurant adjoined to al gambero but it was closed for renovation and there was no mentioning about it in venere nor in al gambero pages. But overall it is a quite pleasent hotel with friendly staff. The location is superb and our two year old could not get tired of chasing/feeding the pigeons at San Marco. I will recommend all travellers by plane to take at least one way taxi drive from or to airport. In a hot summer day the water taxi was a very enjoyable trip itself (95 €).

Nice hotel on superb location, friendly staff, free internet. Breakfast is not really worth it, though.

Low score on cleanliness due to long-term accumulation of dust on unused top shelf of wardrobe and on minibar shelf. This is our only complaint - the hotel and staff were excellent! Great location!

I really enjoyed my stay in Venice at Al Gambero. The location is perfect and the rooms are really clean and well equiped. I just want to make an observation: they don't mention the unexistence of a lift in the hotel building.

After canvassing a number of hotels, we decided on Al Gambero based on the positive feedback we read on the website - we were not disappointed. The room, though small by US standard, is very well maintained: clean, with modern amenities, fresh linen, etc. The breakfast is more than adequate given the European type of breakfast. Hotel staff very accomodating. We are an early riser and at 6 am, the receiving area where the computer/internet access was located was still closed but they let us in upon request. Hotel location is superb being halfway the Rialto Bridge and San Marco Square. This hotel and venere website are both highly recommended!! Thanks a lot.

A good hotel, cheap and near Place San Marco and the stop of Rialto (only 2 minutes walk). Breakfast too soon in the morning. Nothing other to say.

To consider the price, it's quite excellent for location, service & facility etc.

We were here in the off-season. Venice in snow was like a dream. The hotel is located in the middle of the San Marco district, at the intersection of a small bridge with a small canal. However, there is boat traffic on the canal, which gives the place a real Venice experience. Coming home to the warm hotel in the middle of snow was always very cosy.

Overall, I found the accommodations at Hotel Al Gambero to be very good. The room was small, but clean and well-kept. Staff was friendly, pleasant, and helpful. I would gladly stay there again.

Although there was miscommunication between us and hotel (the receptionist could not find our reservatio! but managed to give us a room), we did enjoy the stay. Very conveniently located just between Realto and St Mark's square. Easy access to waterbus. Room was clean and staff are helpful. Do reccomend.

Excellent choice--convenient to everything, particularly clean, rooms well serviced and nicely decorated, great night's sleep. Staff very helpful at all times of day (or night), great customer service, speak impeccable English. Made for a great first visit to Venice. Two slight negatives: --No lift for luggage and steep stairs make for a trek to the fourth floor :) --Breakfast ends at 9:30 (Could have used an extra 30 minutes several mornings, buth there is a nice, inexpensive cafe nearby down Calle dei Fabbri toward San Marco if you happen to miss breakfast) Still, highly recommended and I would stay there again. You could pay a lot more and not get any better.

Nice hotel, despite of the small size of rooms. Nice employees, always ready to answer any request. Only one weakness: noise insulation is bad, so, when your neighbours are a bit noisy, then you take immediate profit of their discussion. Global good impression ; I would recommend this hotel.

If you would like one of the most pleasant stays in Italy, this is definitely the place to stay. The staff is the best for any of your needs. The room was the BEST in Italy, and we traveled a month throughout the country. I want to thank the staff and hotel for making my stay in Venice the best experience in Italy. I will return some day and will be delighted to stay in your hotel again.

My room was clean and nicely decorated. Amenities such as stationary and coffee were provided. The staff was helpful and courteous. The location was great and the price for Venice in the middle of August can't be beat! Check out the restaurant downstairs.

The hotel was welcoming and staff were extremely helpful. Rooms were clean and generally well equipped. En suite was clean, spacious and had modern facilities. Breakfast was basic with cereal and limited bread but adequate and the tray in the room was not always stocked with tea, coffee etc. Location was excellent - very central yet quiet. Even at the end of a long day we just about coped with the 4 flights of stairs. Very enjoyable short break.

We stayed at 'Al Gambero' for three nights and we found the staff extremely helpful. The rooms were nice, quite spacious and very clean. Venise is a very expensive city and some other hotel are ludicrously priced but 'Al Gambero' offers good value for money. It is also very well situated (5 munites walking distance from Saint Peter's square). We will definitely stay there again next time we go to Venice.

Clean, very good location, good breakfast. The only consideration is the small size of the rooms and facility but that is the nature of the place. You are at a very short distance of the Piazza San Marcos. The location, if you want to be near the piazza, is more than perfect. I had a room with a view to the cannal.

We had a pleasant stay at Al Gambero. The room was a bit small, if you have large luggage there won't be much room for their storage. The other draw back is no elevator, so if your room is located on the 3rd or 4th floor it's a long way up after a long trip. The room was very clean as was the entire property. The location is ideal, less then 10 minute walk from San Marco Square & the Realto Bridge. The continental breakfast provided was also very good, with sufficient variety. Overall I would recommend Al Gambero to anyone travelling to Venice. Luigi & Lucy Falcone (Calgary,Alberta,Canada)

Only stayed in Al Gambero for one night in March i.e. off season, but we both enjoyed our stay. Welcome was very pleasant with reception staff speaking great English. Room wasn't anything special but very clean. Bathroom was also moden and clean. Location is great - 1 minute walk from St Marks Square. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking to go to Venice.

Charmant petit hôtel, très bien situé près de la place Saint Marc. Très calme, très belle petite chambre aménagée avec goût et vue sur le petit canal. Salle de bain très complète et très propre. Accès facile via vaporetto Rialto. A recommander!

Second time at Al Gambero. Excellent location. Rooms good size and clean, sheets changed daily. Breakfast ok but be early, the dining area can feel cramped when full. Overall good value for money for a comfortable hotel in the centre of Venice. Recommended to friends.

A great hotel at a great price. If this fits your budget then don't think of stopping anywhere else, it's in a perfect position in a great city. As with anywhere in Venice don't expect a big room, we will defiantly be back

This was the best of all the places we (Mom and 21 year old daughter)stayed in on our recent trip to France and Italy. Our room had windows above the canal and we loved seeing the gondolas go by. The bathroom was spotless as was the bedroom. Having access to the internet was a real plus!! Continental breakfast was plentiful and the dining area was very nicely decorated. The staff was more than accomodating. The only drawback at all to staying here would be if you had difficulty climbing stairs. Our room was on the 4th floor(which in American terms is the 5th), but we welcomed the exercise! If I am ever in Venice again, I would absolutely stay at Al Gambero.

Excelent location!!!Hotel was nice although out of the four we stayed in during our trip to Italy this was our least favorite. The rooms were nice, clean, very nice bathrooms. The room didn't get very cold and we were spoiled with balconys in our other rooms so that may be why this was not our top hotel. We were on the 4th floor and the hotel doesn't have an elevator so that was a bit tiring. I would recommend this hotel...enjoy!

This hotel (which we found hard to find, despite the directions given!) was perfect for our short break. It's ideally located between St Mark's Square and the Rialto bridge so all the usual attractions are close by. Our room was small but clean and nicely decorated. It looked out over a canal (which was a little smelly at times) so we could watch the gondolas and small boats go by. The hotel staff were friendly and unobstrusive. Breakfast was continental and whilst not hugely exciting, was fine for our needs. We have already recommended this hotel to friends, and if we return to Venice, we happily would stay at Hotel Al Gambero again.
