We needed a hotel near to Villa d"Este and the airport and this was our first time in the area. Some of the reviews were really not good but we decided to book it anyway because it suited our purposes. We were very pleasantly surprised. All the things that people had said were bad were in fact really good. The reception clerks were very helpful and pleasant. The room was very clean, spacious and tastefully decorated. We enjoyed our breakfast very much. The hotel is situated in an industrial area and so the surroundings were uninspiring but that did not bother us since we knew in advance and were tired out after a busy day. There was, however, a very good restaurant within walking distance recommended by the hotel staff. We would definitely stay there again. As for the smell that reviewers wrote about...Keep the windows closed and the airconditioner on and you will not smell anything and will stay cool!!

Very disappointed, outside pool was closed (not cleaned and roped off)even though it was a scorching day in June. Room lock was broken which meant anybody could get into the room. When resolved the key would not work. Wanted a drink at the pool. 3 staff in the back room of the bar, 1 grudgingly served me. I was told by reception that we were not allowed drinks at the pool I had to get them myself. No diet coke and cost of drinks was ridiculous (£18)for two drinks. Didn't bother going to restaurant. Could have been a great stay spoilt by extremeley poor service.

Nice hotel - clean, good facilities, excellent breakfast. Location is right between Rome and Tivoli so good as a base for travelling in area. Would not recommend it if you wanted to be in Rome or Tivoli though as it is about a half hour to hour away from both. Area is not nice - all hotels and industrial. A bit dirty also - refuse on streets etc.

We traveled via train (line B) from Termini station to Ponte Mammolo, buses leaves every 15 minutes to Tivoli which is the last stop, Bagni Di Tivoli is about 15 km before Tivoli. If you speak Italian you'll have no problem but to find someone that speaks English you got to be very lucky! We showed hotel pictures & the address to the passengers with sign language and limited Italian. We got off at the right stop which is opposite the hotel. We advise people with cars to book this hotel, buses are like a pack of sardines at all times, if you manage to get on, you may be lucky to get off! So be warned. Italians are not the friendliest of people and the big majoroty of them can not speak English even the Policemen will not talk to you, they will look through you and turn away. Hotel breakfast is basic buffet(coffee.tea, fruit juices, cakes, toast)indoor swimming pool is very cold, sauna and gym is small you must pay to use them(9 euro) per person also you pay (5 euros)for a cap to use in the pool.Hotel allways full with business conferences and weddings, rooms are very clean and every day they change beddings .Next to hotel there is a indoor market with lots of small shops and a supermarket, the town is small with lots of cafes and couple of resturants and Mc Donalds. There is a train station about 700 meters away, you can travel to Tiburtina Station and get underground into Rome or Travel into tivoli up on the hills to visit Villa D Este and other historical sites. In rome everything cost money, you pay every where you visit and enter,if you can"t speak Italian learn sign language good luck.

Some areas and the bathroom need some "refreshment". Breakfast is nice and very convenient. All surfaces are decorated with carpets, tissues or color paintings. We needed to open the window to have some "fresh air".

The actual area around Tivoli is a dump ! It was a very pleasant surprise to find such a pleasant clean hotel with such an enormous swimming pool !!! [Why ?] After a very hot day at the wonderful Villa d'este and Villa Adriana this hotel was a pleasant place to cool off.

After having traveled to Europe more than ten times, the "Grand Hotel Duca de'Este" is the worst hotel experience I've had in Europe or the U.S. The hotel staff was rude. One evening a loud rock band played at the hotel for three hours. The bass shook my room and made it impossible to sleep or think. When I complained about the music at the reception desk, the staff basically told me "tough luck" in broken english. They refused to let me speak with a manager and refused to move me to a different room on the other side of the hotel. The hotel is also near a natural sulfur spring and reeked like flatulance. This hotel was an awful experience.
