Great location --- easy to get to from the railway station and within 1 minute you can get to the lakeside. It was Sunday night, but we were not bothered by any noise from the plaza at all. We took a taxi from the railway station to get to the hotel bcoz there was no clear information about the route. But it was only about 1km distance.

Before our arrival I was a bit anxious of the one star rating of the hotel, regardless of the overhelmingly positive reviews. After our stay at Elena, I must say that this hotel feels rather like a two-three star than a single star one. The staff is very helpful, the location is excellent (although a bit noisy in the night) and the room was relatively spacious with a splendid balcony. The breakfast was also OK. If you are looking for something in the, I fully recomment Elena.

The location was great in a square with lots of great eating options. We enjoyed having a balcony with lovely views and a fridge in our room. While the room and bathroom were small they were very comfortable. The lady who manages it was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was superb.

We picked this family run hotel for our three night stay in Stresa on Lake Maggiore because of its convenient central town location, only five minutes walk from the ferry terminal. The hotel is very bright and cheerful and faces a square lined with a variety of shops and restaurants. We requested a room at the back of the hotel which faced the hillside because we thought it would be quieter, which it was. The owner greeted us when we arrived and she quickly checked us in to our room on the 5th floor near the top of the building. The room was compact but spacious enough with a nice bathroom and shower. There was a nice small balcony terrace too. Breakfast was included with the room and both the breakfast and the breakfast room were the nicest that we experienced on our entire Northern Italy holiday. The hotle location was perfect for visitng the multitude of shops in Stresa and since we spent two entire days taking boat trips on Lake Maggiore to visit nearby islands and gardens as well as travelling all the way to the north end of the lake and back, we loved the convenience of being so close to the ferry terminal. The owner was very helpful to us throughout our stay. Overall, it was a great way to wind up our three week holiday.

A gorgeous quaint hotel room in a perfect setting looking down on a piazza. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. So close to restaurants and shops and the harbour. Our only complaint was that the 1st night was a Sunday and it was like trying to sleep in the middle of a party going on below until 1 a.m. The other 2 nights were much better though. The little balcony was perfect with the exception of the 'dead flowers' in the flower troughs. We also had a large sign hung right along our balcony which obstructed most of the view. Overall it was great though and we would recommend it to anyone.

This exceptional hotel is located near a lively, charming piazza with several nearby restaurants. The nearby "La Botte," with 9 tables, is one of the best places three weeks into our Italy trip. The Hotel Elena* is much more highly rated than its single star might be interpreted. We were delighted with the triple room with a balcony facing the piazza. The breakfast was solid and available in a charming breakfast area. They also serve smaller, snackable items including an excellent lemon tarte.

Hotel Elena is in an excellent location in Stresa! My room was small and a bit out dated, but very clean and comfortable. The rooms all have a balcony over looking the square. The bathroom was small, but clean and functional! The hotel staff were helpful and friendly. There is no AC, but the fan in the room kept it quite comfortable. I would recommend this hotel if you want a great location, great price and don't care about a lot of extra frills!

We stayed 5 days and loved it! The Signora and her staff were without exception, helpful, friendly and charming. The breakfast was excellent. The lift was very welcome (we are old). We were delighted with the central position, our balcony (with flowers) overlooking the beautiful piazza, and the total experience.

This was one of the friendliest hotels we ever stayed (out of hundreds). Ownwers and staff were competent, accomodating, almost like we were part of their family. Excellent central location, very short walk to lake and restaurants. If you arrive by car, make sure you get directions, because the hotel is in a pedestrian zone.

This small hotel is like a beautiful older woman with excellent bone structure and features, but her wardrobe needs an update. Please replace the plastic flowers and multicolored bedspreads and faded watercolors. The big money has already been spent on the nice, new bathrooms, so take the next step and get some solid color bedspreads and new photos or posters for the walls. The sheets and towels are wonderful, but the mattress is lumpy. The bar and breakfast area are beautiful with the wooden banquets and panels, but the old pictures make it look tired and dated. I love the floors. The piazza is wonderful as are the terraces. Stresa is a wonderful place to visit. There are a small number of parking spaces behind the hotel. The staff was very welcoming and helpful.

We really enjoyed our stay in this excellent small hotel. It's really a pensione over a cafe/bar/ & has a real friendly atmosphere. It is family run & they all try very hard to make your stay enjoyable. Our room, with a balcony decked with flowers overlooking the very lively piazza was straight out of a film!

Great little hotel I would recommend it to anyone.Located in main square of the old town but only approx 100 metres from the ferry terminal and the lakeside promenade. First impression of hotel was deceptive but we soon came to appreciate the homely, informal atmosphere and really enjoyed our stay there. The icing on the cake was the breakfast service which was excellent.

We fell in love with our room the moment we walked in. Not only was the room spacious and clean, it had a balcony overlooking the piazza. It's location was excellent, being on the piazza and hence close to restaurants and shops and not far from the waterfront. Also, the breakfasts were excellent. The woman who owns and manages the hotel was very hospitable greeting us warmly with our every return. I gave the hotel a 7 for public areas simply because, unlake large hotels, it does not really have a public area other than the cafe at the entrance. However, the whole piazza in front of the hotel serves as its "public area," and that was sufficient for us. We are budget travelers, and this was superb hotel for our budget. We also gave the room an 8 for quietness because it is on the piazza, and on weekends the piazza can get a little noisy. Still, the noise did not last late, and our sleep was never bothered by noise. One facilities comment: the elevator is small, so there's only room for 2 passengers and their limited luggage. (This is not a complaint, just a notice.) If we ever return to Stresa (which we loved) we will definitely book again at Elena. We were more than satisfied. It was the perfect place and setting to conclude our three weeks in Italy.

The Hotel Elena is a gem of a place located in the heart of the main piazza. Signora Laura offers a very friendly and helpful welcome to her guests and runs a tight ship. Rooms offer nice views either to the charming piazza or back to the hills. This economy hotel offers small but very clean, comfortable accommodations with a tasty breakfast. It is a great bargain. The town of Stresa has great charm with its cobble-stoned streets, charming shops and spectacular lakefront walking park. Recommended for dining: Osteria degli Amici and Il Buscione wine bar.

Hotel Elena is situated on the main piazza and is the perfect location for walking to all restaurants, shopping and the lake. In an old building, our 4th floor room had a remodeled bathroom, as did others that we saw.You can walk to the train station but Stresa does have local cabs. We spent 4 nights in Stresa at the Elena, and had no car- no problem! A great breakfast was included in our price, which turned out to be $308 for 4 nights in early Sept. Quite a bargain, in a town that boasts uber-ritzy traditional hotels along the lake.

Much better than we expected, and would not stay anywhere else if we ever return to Stresa. This place is an absolute gem. Overall an enjoyable stay. Room was small and clean and relatively basic. It verlooked the square with its noise - but we saw this as a plus as we were able to sit out on the balcony and watch the world go by. Big down point was the fact that the room had an air-con unit - but we could not use it (only for winter?) so had to make do with a fan which was not enough in the august heat. Car parking a hassle but what do you expect in a small town centre hotel. Owners friendly. Location was brilliant. Overall a quirky but nice hotel which we would go back to - but not when it is so hot.

Nice place, very central piazza. It was not easy to find it for the first time with a car. We had to park on the embarcadero. From the boat ticket office - go exactly inland 200m. No refrigerator, no internet, no international power point. I could not charge my laptop for two days.

This hotel was everything I was looking forward to from the reviews. The staff were warm and friendly and the room was the most spacious I have had for the price. Breakfast was included and quite reasonable. I was on the 4th floor with a balcony overlooking the hills. It was better than those facing the piazza as it was quiet even early in the evening when the piazza was buzzing. The setting is ideal. Easy to get to from the train station ( about 10 mins walk downhill) but well sign posted. The piazza is a hub of restaurants, shops and activity for pedestrian traffic only. The lake was only a few minutes walk away, and it was close to the ferry boat quay. Wished I had stayed longer in Stresa as it is easy to access a variety of places for the day. Milan is only an hour by train and the boats run back up into Switzerland several times a day. I was quite sad to leave Hotel Elena and cannot wait to visit again. Don't miss out on this opportunity.

Hotel Elena is wonderful! The beach is only a few hundred meters away, while the hotel is directly on one of the main squares of Stresa. We loved being in "the thick of things" and could people-watch from our balcony, walk a few steps to wonderful shops and restaurants, and still have easy access to the beautiful lakefront. The owner/manager of Hotel Elena is lovely, the staff is terrific, the room was wonderful, and the price was very reasonable. Who needs a posh resort hotel when you can get the real thing at Hotel Elena? And, by the way, the hotel's cappuccinos are terrific!

Excellent. The room had everything I needed - it was clean and spacious with ensuite bathroom and even a little balcony with a table and two chairs. Although only one star, it met my needs entirely. Helpful staff and ideally located right on the main square in the heart of Stresa life. I'd read about being woken up by the church bells but I didn't hear them so if you sleep soundly even that won't disturb you (I wouldn't have minded hearing them anyway). Plenty of choice at breakfast. Would stay there again.

We were told on arrival that no private parking was available but it is advertised. Then told all spaces are taken. We saw empty spaces so then were told only one space left! "That's all I need" I said. So insist on a space. There were always at least 3 spaces free during our stay! Top Floor Double room at rear with better views to mountains than over the umbrella tops in the square seen from the front rooms. Good choices at buffet breakfast board, reasonable coffee and expresso/cappucino available. You need to look further than the main square for non-touristy restaurants so have fun trying some round the back streets - Stresa is not a big town to cover.

What a great value this place was! Free parking was very narrow, but Marco graciously parked the Fiat for us. We had a quiet room on the top floor on the back side (loved the easy little elevator!), but with the convenience of Piazza Cadorno on the front side, the boat dock and lakefront walk just a block away, train station only about five blocks away. Staff were friendly and welcoming and breakfast was great! Stresa is small, old-fashioned and charming, in a tourist-y way.

Location. Location. Location. The hotel is exceptionally well situated, perhaps too well as it is right on busy Cardonne Piazza and front rooms facing the square, where activity starts at 6 and continues until midnight, can be noisy.

Really loved this hotel, everybody so friendly and helpful. The only problem was the leaf collection machine early in the morning competing with the church bells but in some respects it gave a sense of inclusion (at 7am) being woken up with everybody else in the center of the town. Nice small hotel right in the center of the charming village of Stresa. We walked from the rail station (a bit of a hike with our luggage) and were happy that they were expecting us. Our room was simple, clean, and roomy. The beds were pretty hard, and one was a bit on the lumpy side. We were on the street side, but Stresa is pretty quiet so we didn't notice any street noise. The included breakfast was the typical European breads, cereal, juice and coffee. We would stay there again should we ever return to Stresa.

I stayed at Elena in September 2008, I was travelling with my mother. We found Hotel Elena very clean and comfortable. There was a lift which made it easy to take luggage to the room. The staff were very helpfull and friendly. Elena is very central to the shops, restaurants and the port area. We also walked to the station which took us about 10 minutes. The only negative was on the Saturday night it was a bit noisy as the hotel has a bar downstairs. To some it up I would stay at Hotel Elena again. The prices are very reasonable for the area.

This was a great place especially for the money. The staff was excellent--responded immediately at night to a blown fuse in our room which was very much appreciated and beyond expectation.

We had a 4th floor room at the rear it was quickly reached by lift and had a balcony with a great view of the hill. The owners were so welcoming and helpful and the staff brilliant! Not 'posh' but clean and comfortable and very convenient for everything in Stresa. We're silver surfers and had no problems booking. Well done Venere!

Really nice room with a balcony overlooking the square at the heart of town. Many restaurants within a couple of minutes walk. A great little town to stay in when visiting the lake.

The hotel was pretty much fine - tidy and clean, but we stayed the first night on Saturday night, and the noise from the adjacent town square, along with the church bells made it very hard to get some sleep...

We enjoyed our 2 night stay in Stresa at Hotel Elena. The view was beautiful, the room was great, and the people were so helpful and friendly. We will definitely return to this little gem in Italy and stay again at Hotel Elena. It was perfect to celebrate our 10-year anniversary!!

Small hotel with character in good central location overlooking town square. Friendly. Location in pedestrain area means parking limited at rear. We had to park in public car park a short distance away.

Lovely little family run hotel. We arrived very late (a missed plane meant it was almost midnight!) and everything was shut. The person on reception apologised for not having any fresh bread (as in rolls) but made us cheese and ham toasties anyway, with the sliced bread. Which is just what we needed after a long and tiring journey. It's a fairly modest place (with fairly modest prices to match), but clean, well fitted out and pretty conveniently located. If we returned to Stresa, we'd definitely stay at the Elena again.

The Hotel Elena is situated in the center of Stresa, directly on the main square. It is a short walk to the lake, a fifteen minute walk from the Stresa railway station, and restaurants, shops and the excitement and romance of Stresa are literally at your doorstep. Our room had a balcony facing the main square overlooking the mountains -- simply breathtaking. Breakfast was included and although not elaborate it was adequate. The room was on the small side but it was very quaint, very comfortable, and well appointed. The hotel appears to be family run, providing a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. We would stay at the Elena on our next trip to Stresa without any hesitation whatsoever.

Small hotel but very well managed end very clean. Only 6 parking places for the 14 rooms and impossible to park if the car is not a small one. Location is very good... maybe too good because noisy at night (main piazza just in front of the hotel) But the hotel is good (very good for the price) and I strongly recommand it if you want something cheap.

This is a great hotel in the center of downtwon Stresa near "everything." For the price, it's great. There is no AC though but it cools down at night even in August. I had a veranda overlooking the square. I had to leave real early missing breakfast but the owner even fixed me a take-away breakfast in the morning. Just a nice homely place.

This hotel is in the perfect place , in a small square about 100 yds from the lake. Our stay was superb and the hotel although only a 2 star was brilliant and cleanliness and service was fantastic.. The owner Laura made us feel like part of the family and a great breakfast too. We would definately go back. It is an ideal place for seeing the islands in the middle of the lake and also for going up the alps in the cable cars..well worth the trip

A super central location in Stresa. Ideal for a short stay. We had 2 nights. Having a fridge in the room was very useful. Continental buffet style breakfast plentiful. A little tight for parking, so I wouldn't recommend it if you have a large vehicle (e.g. People carrier)

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Elena. Our room was small, but it had a balcony with flower boxes and a nice view of the town and surrounding hills. The bath was small, but modern and the shower was more than adequate. The room was spotlessly clean and we had fresh linens and towels daily. The staff was helpful and friendly, and we enjoyed being in the center of things in Stresa.

Elena was a pleasant surprise. Warm welcome by friendly owners. Totally agree with GP comments. It was unseasonably hot when we stayed (mid June) and there was no air conditioning or breeze. Next day we asked if a fan was available and one was given to use over the next two nights. I would happily stay again, it's particularly good if you're on a budget.

Although the room was noisy, we were aware that if we wanted a room overlooking the quaint square that it would be noisy. We also knew there was to be a Miss Stressa contest that night and we had excellent seats to view the festivities

Elena was recommended to us by friends, so we knew it was a plain & simple type of hotel above an ice-cream/coffee & drinks bar facing one of Stresa'a main squares. Of its type it was excellent. One received a pleasant welcome; we had asked for a quiet room and got one - at the back on the 4th (top) floor. It was airy & reasonably spacious with a balcony from which one had a view of the hills; impeccably clean; the en-suite shower room was small but perfectly adequate; the room was equipped with a fridge & a small safe (for the use of which no charge was made).Breakfasts in the bar downstairs were more than adequate unless only a "full English" will do. Hotel staff were friendly & helpful - their advice about restaurants was invaluable. Excellent, central location; no garden, of course, but you could linger over a drink at one of their tables in the square for as long as you liked. So if you are satisfied with the simple life and don't yearn for deep carpets, well-upholstered armchairs and obsequious flunkeys Hotel Elena can be strongly recommended.

Our flight was delayed and we arrived in the early hours of the morning, access to the hotel was not easy, had to walk approximatly 1000 meters with luggage as late nite access was restricted up access roads to the Piazza which this hotel faces onto. Should be ok if you arrive at normal hours. Even thou we were very late, we were made very welcome. The hotel is in a great location, easy for the ferry service, shopping and caffe's and is very good value, would stay here again. Parking is somewhat restricted.
