Coul House Hotel - Contin, Strathpeffer
Contin Ross-shire - Strathpeffer1-877-662-6988
Originally built in 1821 for Sir George Mackenzie, this remarkably unique building is infused with the traditional charms of its historic past. This inspired atmosphere is further complemented by 8 acres of mature woodland, tranquil gardens and unspoilt views over the mountains and beyond. Having been sympathetically refurbished, the building is now a delightful family-run hotel and it takes great pride in its natural passion for hospitality. Both peaceful and relaxing, it’s the perfect place from which to discover the romantic beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
Specialising in contemporary Scottish cuisine, the restaurant has garnered an impressive reputation for its unique dining experience and ever-evolving seasonal menus. Garry the chef is something of a traditionalist, preferring to make his own breads, pastries, deserts and stocks for all his sauces and he even cures and smokes on site using traditional Highland methods. Committed to using the fine produce and ingredients, much of what is used is sourced locally, including fish from Billy McGlinn of Inverness based Highland Fish, meat from Campbell`s Prime Meat and lobsters and scallops from Dingwall based Keltic Seafare. The dining room itself is one of the grandest in the house and within its remarkable octagonal walls are an ornate ceiling, large black marble fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows.
The property is located in the hills above the village of Contin and is just a 15 minute drive from the A9 and 20 minutes from Inverness. What’s more it offers plenty of free on-site parking for all guests. Inverness offers excellent transport links and there is also a local train station at Dingwall, just a 12 minute taxi ride from the Hotel. For those flying in, Inverness Airport is just over a 35 minute drive away.
Nestled amidst the rugged splendour of the North Highlands of Scotland, the Hotel’s privileged position makes for the perfect base from which to explore the area. With miles of wooded trails for hiking or biking, secluded lochs for kayaking or fishing, glorious glens with magnificent views, ancient forts and castles, gardens and galleries, boat trips, and battlefields there is certainly a plethora of things to do. There’s the magnificent Dunrobin Castle, the family seat of the Earl of Sutherland, the beautiful Rogie Waterfalls, Macbeth’s Cawdor Castle and Glen Ord Whisky Distillery. Of course for those who like to do a spot of monster hunting there is the world-famous Loch Ness.

Nice place. Public areas and grounds were lovely but our room (standard double)though very comfortable, definitely needed updating. But then somehow this fitted with the old fashioned sort of place this is. Breakfast was quality (the evening dining not quite so good) and the level of service is about the best I've experienced at a hotel. They do really need to master the repeat function on the MP3 player in the dining room though. I'd recommend to anyone looking for a traditional style country hotel to visit for a few nights and see myself returning for another stay some time in the future.
