Really helpfull, competent, and friendly service; convinient walking distance to city center; satisfying breakfast; very beautiful garden; repairing small technical deficits in rooms would considerably improve the overall impression

First room offered on ground floor had inadequate bathroom (tatty) but a change was offered for the second night to a nicer first floor room with good views, split level with raised bedroom and better bathroom. Breakfast location and service excellent with good choice and quality of food on offer.

Holiday stay of 7 nights. Second time in Siena. Rooms excellent for comfort and cleanliness but would have been on the small side for couples (we were in 2 singles). Most of the hotel's rooms were larger however (only 4 of this size). Staff very friendly and efficient. Garden excellent setting for breakfast (good cold buffet) and for relaxing/reading during the day or a drink at night. Just outside the city walls (very convenient if driving in and out into the countryside) but walk into centre 20 minutes (uphill) on the way in or 15 minutes (downhill) on the way back - could be a little strenuous for anyone with fitness/mobility problems. Hotel was quite expensive (with the single supplement we paid) but with these provisos, I would happily recommend it for anyone who wants to be in easy walking distance of central Siena and we greatly enjoyed our stay.

The Hotel Santa Caterina was excellent. The staff were extremely helpful and courteous and the view from the garden was lovely. The hotel is very near the Porta Romana and only a short walk to the centre of Siena. We would definitely come back and would highly recommend it.

The Santa Caterina is a beautiful boutique hotel. Number 19 & 23 were definitely the best rooms (19 with the balcony & 23 up in the tower). The staff were so friendly & helpful. The restaurants that we went to were amazing & very local and delicious food & wine. Breakfasts were ample & very good. The hotel was so clean and beautifully kept. I would recommend it to anyone and would go again. Next time lets hope the pound is stronger than the Euro!! An amazing 40th birthday. Thankyou. Vanessa & Niels van Dinther and Laura & Paul Miller

The hotel was just fine. Loud near road. A hotel in town may have fit our needs better than on the outskirts. Front desk help was good and a hostess at breakfast very sincere and welcoming. I believe a stay in the later spring overlooking gardens like previous reviews recommended would be very nice.

The room itself was very spacious; however, the hallways and room entrance smelled horribly of cigarette smoke. We opened the windows to air the room out. The hotel staff was adequate, but often, unwilling to look up bus times, site times for us.

The staff was excellent and responsive to our needs. We wanted to turn in our rental car in Siena rather than driving back to Rome, and without asking they made all the arrangements. I was impressed with the breakfast each morning and the quality of the staff. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a great location just outside the city within walking distance to all that Siena offers.

This was the first trip to Italy for my wife and I. We chose this hotel based on descriptions of the view and facility. We were not disappointed. The morning view of the hills rolling from rich green out to distant pale blue mountains was wonderful. We had a two level room with a sturdy metal winding stair. It was the quietest of the four hotels we stayed in on our trip. The Duomo, Baptistry and "crypt" at the center of town were stunningly ornate and beautiful. For a great view take the spiral stone staircases to the top of the Facade.

A gem of a small hotel located just outside the Roman gate away from the bustling city center. Pleasant walk to the center, but local bus service also is available. My room faced the road but was not noisy at all with the window and shutter closed at night. The garden is perfect for breakfast and lunch, with a sunny room also available for rainy days. Very friendly, competent and helpful staff. A small grocery store and a fantastic bakery are nearby, about 200-300 meters down the road away from the Roman gate. I'd recommend a taxi to and from the train station, which is across town from the hotel. I´d come back to this hotel anytime.

This was our first visit to the Santa Caterina. We were particularly satisfied with the helpful, welcoming attitude of the staff and the peaceful garden. Access to the centre of Siena was easy, a 10 minute walk. There is quite a good restaurant about 200 yards from the hotel.

If you are going to book try to get room 19, it has the only balcony in the hotel that shows great views into a valley below sienna. Half the rooms show a good view, the other half show a view of a busy road! The hotel is outside the city walls and it's about a 15 minute uphill walk to the main piaza.

A lovely hotel and excellent welcome from very friendly staff. a pleasant 10-15 mins walk from the centre of Siena but quite a walk from the station but on the bus route although buses are very crowded. Bus station is nearer. Room was on 2 levels with bedroom up a staircase not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Only a wardrobe and no drawers in the room. Would have been perfect if it had also had a balcony! Lovely gardens to sit and relax in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast.

Lovely little hotel conviniently placed just outside the roman gate=calmness after the tourist tracks round the Campo and Doumo. Nice and relaxing walk to centre with small bus service availible. Unfortunelately placed just by a road with traffic light meaning some noise from the road, but once you are in a room facing the garden it´s OK (I wouldn´t wánt one facing the street). The lovely garden with panoramic views is a tranquil place to relax. Very friendly and sensitive staff. We´d come back anytime. In case I missed to mention it: Siena and Toscana is just pure magic.

Hotel Santa Caterina is located in a great spot, outside the walls of the city. Staff were very friendly, car parking was good. The only down side, was the room, it was a tiny loft room, with the bathroom and wardrobe downstairs and the bed was up a narrow spiral staircase, wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. I would stay there again and request a different room.

Great location, great rooms and views over Tuscan hills. Breakfast on the terrace garden a must, great choice and views.Although the location is just below the Porte Romano, the walk to the Campo is more like 1000 metres, not the 700 they say. Still it was a nice walk.

Overall we were happy with our stay at this hotel .The staff were very helpful and welcoming, the room was clean and comfortable with a good view over the countryside South of Siena. We had no problem with traffic noise as has been mentioned in some reviews of this hotel but as we stayed in February windows and shutters facing the road were kept closed. The hotel is well located (especially for arrival by car) to visit the old town as it is about 200 metres from the Porta Romana entrance gate from where it is a 10 minute walk to the centre of the old town. Parking is a problem in the whole area but the hotel does offer private parking at extra cost however getting in and out of this private parking area in anything other than a smallish car would be almost impossible !

We would return in a heartbeat, the location is perfect; just outside the city walls, with a lovely garden in the back. Lucky to get a garden room on the ground floor which was just lovely. I couldn't believe how peaceful it was given that there where main roads on two sides of this hotel. Whether on not other guests are so lucky I can't say. Quite a long haul up to the "campo" but not out of reach of the determined pedestrian! Superb small hotel.

Situated on the corner of a main road junction our initial fears were soon dispelled. With a room overlooking the gaarden there was no traffic noise and our stay of 3 nights proved a very pleasent one. The room had very effective AC, was very clean and well appointed as was the bathroom which had good towels and hot water flowed from the hot tap. Breakfast was a very pleasent experience with a wide selection provided buffet style. each morning we were able to eat in the garden but if this had not been possible I think the breakfast room would of been very crowded. Apart from breakfast the garden was a pleasent place to sit and the hotel does serve refreshments there. However there is very little casual seating available !00 meteres from the Santa Romana gate and 700 from Il Campo the hotel is a good tourist base and we would return

This was a charming hotel with a lovely breakfast area, garden beyond and views of Tuscany hills. We especially enjoyed our room with the balcony overlooking the hills (#19; only one of two rooms with balconies). On our departure there was no problem getting a breakfast before leaving even though it was not during the sceduled breakfast time (delicious variety and more than received at other hotels.) There is an uphill walk to the piazza (20 min.) which is fine. Do take a taxi from the train station as route to hotel way too complex. Lorenza, owner, helpful with local information and very friendly. Her staff polite and efficient and met our needs.

I was staying at this hotel for my wedding and it was a perfect retreat from the craziness of the event. Restaurants were in walking distance, but the walk in to the center of town did look like quite a hike, climbing of stairs and such. Much like the hills in San Francisco. However, the whole hotel did not have an iron or were not very willing to assist in finding one so that I would get the wrinkles out of my wedding dress. The bathrooms were amazing and we had been contacted my the owners and were given a beautiful room over the garden with a terrace. Breakfast was amazing. Worth the splurge, and very romantic.

Our highlight in Italy was Sienna and it started with Santa Caterina. It was beyond our best expectations. It is like staying at a 5 star B&B. The staff treated us like royalty from day one. Lorenza knows EVERYTHING so just ask her for suggestions. We even hired a driver and went to a winery. All restaurant suggestions were spectacular. We were there during preparations for the Palio so that made our first trip to Sienna even more special. Pictures can't begin to show the breathtaking views over the valley from the garden at this Hotel.

This was the one of the best places we stayed on a two week trip from Rome northward. Unfortunately it was only a one night stand (a Sunday night). The hotel was very nice. Staff was exceedingly friendly. They had a great outside garden area in the back with a nice view of the countryside. It was located on a busy intersection, so noise might be a problem if your room is on the street side. Try for a back side room. It's a ten to fifteen minute walk to the center of town but we enjoyed walking and the walk is entirely thru the old part of town. Parking can be a problem. Street parking is available but tight. The hotel has some parking in the back but charges 10 Euros a nite. I would certainly stay here again.

The rooms, though small, were clean and quiet, especially on the courtyard side. What set this hotel apart from the others we stayed in on our trip(8 in all)was the excellent personal service we received from Lorenza and the rest of the staff. Skip this hotel. The best thing about the Santa Caterina is the courtyard and the view of the countryside. However, we were given an awful little room right next to the front desk and public washroom, and our window overlooked the entrance into the courtyard at ground level. We could not open the window coverings and get air or see the view because of the lack of privacy of our room location and we would not have been able to see the view anyway, since you needed to be up on the 2nd level, at least, to see it. The room was also quite smelly; we believe the smell was coming from the washroom next door, since it was worse at some points. As well, the Italian practice of leaving your room key at the front desk when you are out of the building did not bother us anywhere we stayed, except here. At the Santa caterina, the keys were hung beside a small counter just inside the door of the hotel. People entering the hotel could almost reach them from the door, which would not be a problem if there was someone sitting behind the counter at all times. Andrea, the night clerk, was usually very good about rushing right out when he heard someone come in, but the woman during the day (Lorenza?) was not quite as attentive. At one point we were waiting for at least five minutes before someone appeared to give us our key, and even then it was the maid, not Lorenza, plenty of time for someone to grab the keys and get into the guest rooms (this was also the only place we stayed where there was not a safe in-room). At the time of our prebooking, it was indicated to us that there was parking at the hotel. They must not have had many spots, because they were 'full-up' the whole time we were there and we had to park WAY down the street. One evening we even had to repeatedly go out and check for spots along the road, while our car was illegally parked on the sidewalk, because there was nothing available. We don't know how the hotel decided who got parking and who did not.

The hotel is very well located close to "Porta Romana" (10 minutes walk to Piazza del Campo) but right on a cross road with traffic lights so you should ask for a room facing the garden. Ours was on the street and rather noisy. Italian scooters !… :-) The website mentions a car park in the hotel but there is only room for 6 cars. Free parking in the street is very difficult but you can park right on the Porta Romana for 1,50 € per hour (night is free). The breakfast is average but served in the pretty terrasse garden where you can enjoy a wonderful and peaceful view on the country side below. All in all the hotel was a bit too expensive, but Siena is an expensive town anyway…

We were fortunate to have a room with a balcony from which there is a wonderful view. The staff were extremely helpful and professional. The public rooms are small but gracious and the garden a delight (it was a real treat to have breakfast there). Although the hotel is outside the city walls and in the summer heat there is a fairly strenuous walk to the city centre, we would certainly choose the Santa Caterina again.

Our stay at Santa Caterina was fantastic. Our room overlooked the Tuscan hills. We were right at the end of the corridor and so it was very quiet. Reccommend requesting a room facing the back of the property and the otherside faces a main road and could be noisy. Request car parking too. Santa Caterina was the one of the better hotels we stayed at while in Italy. I would defintely book this hotel again. This was absolutely my favorite hotel on our trip to Italy. The staff was wonderfully friendly and Roberto greeted us like old friends. We walked from the bus stop to the hotel and it was only about a 15-20 minute walk even with all our suitcases. Part of it was uphill, so be warned, but then again Siena is all uphill! I spent my 30th birthday here and could not imagine a better city in which to celebrate. Breakfast was fantastic mostly because of the stunning views from the garden and the service was impecable. Our hosts looked up train schedules for us on the internet and anticipating what time we were scheduled to depart from the train station, called a taxi for us without our having to ask. This was our "splurge" hotel and it was worth every penny. I will stay here again and again every time I visit my new favorite city, Siena.

Comfortable hotel with excellent view from back. Suited us (couple & son 13 in triple room) very well.Quite a long, but pleasant, walk to centre of Siena, so less suitable for anyone not prepared/able to walk the distance.

This was a lovely place. The pictures don't do it justice. The breakfast was generous; and the staff was delightful.

we were very pleased with our stay. We had rooms on the back of the hotel and they we were very quiet. We were offered an apartment upon arrival at the same price of the two rooms we had reserved, which was very nice. The service was very professional and friendly. Breakfast was wonderful in a beautiful room with fresh fruit, wonderful coffee and great service. Our stay here was a bonus to staying in Siena.

Santa Caterina is much more designed for retirees seeking a quiet bed and breakfast than a young couple. The breakfast is quite good, and the garden is probably quite beautiful in the Spring ( we went in late December and it rained the whole time, so we couldn't enjoy it). The bed was terribly hard/lumpy, and the toiletries were not of high quality. The breakfast staff was helpful.

Excellent welcoming and services for a lovely stay. Very easy to find coming to Siena by car. The hotel parking must be requested in advance (there are just few places available) and it is not free (anyway it's very convenient because the centre of the city is only pedestrian and the city parkings are not so cheap). Piazza del campo is just a few minutes far from the hotel by foot. Many useful information, maps and "suggestions" by the hotel staff about restaurants, surroundings, events, etc.

A good hotel right outside the Porta Romana. Not much in the immeidate vicinity of the hotel, but it's not too long a walk to the Campo and lots of restaurants. Friendly, helpful staff, very nice breakfast and breakfast room. Rooms are a little strange -- beds are in a loft. Makes for more space, but bathroom is downstairs, and there is little or no room to sit and read. The rooms are not quiet -- we heard people on both sides. Overall I'd recommend it, though -- we had a very nice stay and it was a good value in a good location.

LITTLE BIT OUT OF THE CITY, BUT EXCELLENT. VERY NICE ( OR WONDERFULL ) ROOMS, WONDERFULL VIEW OF THE TUSCANY COUNTRY, WONDERFULL GARDEN, WONDERFULL BREAKFAST. IF CASE, TO MUCH WONDERFULL HEATHING SYSTEM, WUE STAY THE TWO DAY ONLY WITH THE BATH ROOM HEATH UNIT, AND IT WAS ENOUGH

A great place. Charming and convenient location. The location was not exactly as we had imagined according to the maps online; the hotel is just outside the city's old walls, as opposed to being inside. However, it was only a 5 minute walk to the inside of the walls. The room was very comfortable; the only complaint was some nail-banging in the morning by a construction crew working on the roof. Not sure if the hotel could have been in control of this. Staff was extremely helpful.

Satisfactory and reasonably priced. Excellent breakfast in pleasant garden with great view. The location is not great, as it is a 15-20 minute uphill walk to the Campo. Room was spartan and quite small, but acceptable.

A lovely hotel with excellent views of the Tuscan countryside. On the advice of others on this site, we asked for a room facing the country. We had what appeared to be the only room on the back side with a balcony. The room was a little small, but with the small entryway, we were able to comfortably fit in all our belongings and ourselves. The location is good... it's about a 10-minute walk to the Piazza del Campo, but we like to walk and enjoyed the country view from our room enough to make it worthwhile. Plus, by notifying the hotel in advance, we secured a free parking space at the hotel for our rental car. Key, since you can't park or drive in central Siena. The staff here is excellent. Everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. Lorenza in particular was very helpful as we were departing with suggestions for our next stops in Tuscany. She insisted on calling ahead to make dinner reservations for us at the restaurant in Pienza that had been recommended by our friends (Latte di Luna). She also suggested that we eat lunch outside of Motelcino at Taverna di Barbi and tour their cellars (she even knew the timing of the tours). We enjoyed both verty much, especially the amazing lunch (best bruschetta of the trip!).

Very nice stay. Excellent location, easy walk to everything. Nice views from garden area. Nice breakfast. Friendly, helpful staff. Street is noisy, but 3-layers of windows and shutters adequately blocks this, and the room had airconditioning. I would definitely stay again.

The lovely garden and beautiful breakfast room are the best features. Our room overlooked the garden and valley. We thought the traffic noise would be bad but the windows completely sound-proofed our room. The staff were helpful. You should advise that there is limited parking on site (6 cars, I think) and that the cost is 15 euros per day. The parking should be reserved in advance with the room because street parking is a big problem.

This is a great hotel and the garden/patio area is beautiful with great views of the countryside. My only problem was the room layout. It was compact and on two levels. The bed upstairs and the bathroon downstairs with a siral staircase in between. For the price I was paying I didnt like is and if a member of your group has any dificulty with climbing stairs this is something to watch out for. Otherwise a good hotel (and the breafast room was lovely also).

The view of the Tuscan hills was beautiful, as was the garden which is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet glass of wine in the afternoon. The staff is both friendly and very competent. This hotel is a wonderful find only 2oo meters from the Porta Romana at the south entrance to the old city. It is only a 15 minute walk to the Campo and most shopping. Ask for Room 16 (2nd floor) which is perfectly situated in the back to avoid street noise and provides a great view of the hills.

We had a lovely stay and would return. The room was split into 2 levels with the bathroom and desk/seating area on the bottom and the bed and tv on the upper level, reached by a circular stairway. For future stays I would request a room complete on one level if available. The view from the garden is beautiful!

Perfect setting on 25/26th July 2004 for our Ruby Wedding date on our tour of Pisa, Siena, Florence and San Gimignano. Proprietor (Lorenze) perfect in organising those little extras. The garden setting for breakfast was intimate with beautiful views. A room at the rear of the hotel was very quiet with the panorama of the Tuscan countryside. Highly recommended.

This hotel was excellent in every way: beautiful gardens, wonderful views, lovely rooms and reception area, excellent breakfast, friendly, helpful service. My only criticism about the relationship between the web page photos and actual property is that the photos don't do it justice. I loved Villa Santa Caterina and would go back there anytime. It was also a great value for the price.

This was charming, small hotel just outside the walls of Siena. The room had lots of windows and provided a beautiful view of the Tuscan countryside. The only small drawback was that the hotel was located on a busy corner and there was a bit noise from the cars and scooters. Overall the staff was very friendly. There was a beautiful garden with tables and chairs with an outstanding. I would return to this hotel.

The biggest problem with this property is the noise level at night. The property is located at a busy major intersection just outside the Porta Romana. At night the property is noiser than most due to a high volume of traffic that uses that road to pass the city center. Also, there were guests in the room above ours who were very inconsiderate and noisy. They would come in late (after midnight) and tramp around their room. Our room had a nice view over the garden and the hills beyond. The bathroom was very small. The toilet in particular would have been a challenge for anyone over 5 fett 9 inches tall. The proprietor (Lorenza) is very friendly and very helpful. The property itself is quite charming, with a lovely garden. The breakfasts were ample and tasty. The public areas are very nice. The hotel is within a 15-20 minute walk to the main sights in the historic center - the historic center is uphill from the hotel and the walk might be a strain for someone who is not physically fit. I probably would not stay at this hotel again because of the high noise level at night. The noise level can be reduced by closing the windows but then the room gets stuffy, making it hard to sleep. Like most places in Italy, the advertised air conditioning was not working during our stay. So we left the windows open slightly and tolerated the night-time noise. There was no problem with evening bugs so one could leave the windows open without fear of being eaten alive by mosquitos.

We were graciously welcomed and accommodated at the Santa Caterina. Located just off the Porto Romano entrance to Siena, the central plaza, shops and restaurants were withing 10 to 15 minutes walking. Ms. Lorenza is an excellent manager and hostess and the hotel and staff reflect her professionalism. When we were bothered by the street traffic noise, she moved us to room 19, on the garden side complete with it's own balcony. The breakfast service is great and is available until 10 a.m., ideal for late risers like ourselves. Joseph suggested several restaurants and all proved to be memorable dinners. Pastry shops abound, and now my hometown bakeries fail to satisfy after the experience of Siena's! We would return to Italy, Siena and Santa Catalina in a heartbeat.

Very conveniently located close to the Porta Romana and a short walk to the center of Siena. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the accomodations clean and comfortable, the food excellent, and the entire property run with pride. We enjoyed our stay very much and would return without a second thought. Next time though we'll be sure to ask for a garden view room as the noise level at the front was at times a little much.

We really enjoyed our stay and thought that the quality of the hotel was very good for the price. We had a room at the back corner of the hotel on an upper floor with a great view of both the city gate and the countryside. The hotel fulfilled all of our expectations. Our room was clean, attractive, and had a wonderful view. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is well located just outside the city gate, relatively easy to find. Plus the building itself is unique and has character. As noted in other reviews, the hotel is located on a street with a bit of traffic as opposed to in the historic center, but we didn't find this to be a problem. Since we drove, it was easy to park our car at the hotel(you should reserve in advance) and get our bags into the hotel easily. Breakfast is also nice.
