Excellent location right by the rolling stairs up to the old city of Siena, but outside with a parking lot. Friendly staff, good restaurant. Nice room, renovated with old style furniture and a new bathroom. We liked the view over the garden and the city walls.

Location is good as the hotel is only 10mn walk from Siena center. But this -old- hotel (need a big renovation) is quite gloomy (you could make an horror movie in the corridors..) Room a bit small, in the bathroom one of the tap was not working and there was an bad smell coming from outside if windows was opened (sewer?)I don't think i would have stayed for more than one night. In one word Overpriced!

The Moderno staff was exceptional in their service to us on our stay in Siena, providing helpful information about the sites and direction to surrounding areas. Only drawback that we found was the parking situation for guests. While we realize there is limited space available in the area, there needs to be better access and space for the guest's autos.

Spotlessly clean. We had room 3. Space was tight. No where to leave suitcases and they blocked the little floor space between bed and table. Free car parking a little uncertain, although we got lucky. Perfectly placed for the 5 flight escalator which takes you up the oh so steep hill into the walled city. Not a place for a long stay, but OK for 2 - 3 nights.

The hotel staff were very welcoming and friendly and answered any question. The breakfast had a good selection of food (and coffee made to order). The location was great - just across the road from the escalators that lead up to the main part of the town and a bus stop right out the front. The room was a decent size (I had booked a single, but got a double) however the bathroom was tiny (but clean and functional). My only comment is the directions provided are very vague, so I did have a bit of trouble finding the place - fortunately I found a very helpful bus driver to point the way. If I was to go back to Siena I would stay here again.

This place was awful. My room smelled really bad like something had died in the walls. The walls were paper thin and I could hear the people beside me. The traffic noises were unbearable (and I wasn't even facing the street). The bed was sagging in the middle and tiny, like a child's bed (don't know how a man would have slept on it). The TV was broken and looked to be 25 years old. I had to stand over the toilet holding the shower head to take a shower, since it wasn't separate (the whole tiny bathroom was drenched).

The rooms are very clean and comfortable. The view and surroundings and connection to Siena very good. The breakfast is extremely bad. The cofee tasts like recycled motor oil (and seems indeed to be reused after it was at your table) the bread hard. I refused to use the breakfast after the first encounter. This is the fourth time in row we visited the place and this has not changed since 2003.

We were warmly welcomed but, while sitting outside for lunch, near the garden our waiter was a very serious and perhaps sad fellow. I detected a sigh as he served us. The same fellow was present for all the meals we had. One wonders if he needed some time off. He never smiled once. Upon entering our room we found our washroom floor to be completely wet, most likely from the shower? We were rudely awakened by the air conditioner at 6 a.m. when it declared the most horrific grinding metal on metal sound. Twice we mentioned this and it was "made a note of". It may still be making this horrific sound for all we know. The internet did not work. Glad the hotel had an elevator and that the location was very near the escalator. In Siena it is all about the walking, and more walking and climbing hills. The places we ate at were adequate especially our last lunch...the lasagne was the best I've ever had. After supper at the hotel we decided not to eat there again. Mr. sourpuss was there as usual and it was just not a very warm and cozy dining room. The most modern thing about the Hotel Moderno was new looking bathroom fixtures. It is a tired, albeit authentic Italian hotel.

Locationwise. This is a great hotel. Very conveniently located to the escalators to go up the old town. My daughter left her wallet one evening before going for dinner. When we came back. The front desk personnel immediately knew my wife went looking for the wallet and approached her and told her they have the wallet with them.

We booked a double room just for one night. The hotel was in a very good location, close to the centre of Siena. Also there was free parking available. The staff were helpful, English speaking and nice. The only downer for us was the very poor breakfast.

The hotel is situated outside the town walls, but almost opposite the escalators that take you very near the center (they take you right at the church of San Francesco), so you combine the best of both (you get free parking as well if you have a car!!). It is not a new hotel, and maybe not so well-maintained, but it does the job.plus the staff is very helpful. The breakfast options are very limited but still can be quite filling!!

When arriving by car, follow signs to the railway station. The main reason we chose this hotel was because of its location to the escalator that takes you to the town center. Unfortunately for us, the escalator was CLOSED due to some town celebration. We ended up having to take a taxi several times which defeated the purpose. Otherwise, the hotel was nice enough.

This hotell has a very nice staff, they make you feel very welcome at the first moment. The location is optimal, a little bit diffictul to find but you are very close to the center. Other hotels more in the center are not possible to reach by car, thus the location of this hotel is optimal. Don't worry about parking, they have their own.

The hotel is on the perimeter road so best to ask for a room on the opposite side if you are sensitive to noise. A great advantage of this hotel is the garden where one can sit at all times & where good restaurant meals are served in the evening - the only drawback is the sound of traffic. The hotel is situated opposite the escalator that takes you up to S. Francesco, thus avoiding a steep climb. Siena is all about walking up & down so it's a great help.

The Hotel Moderno is within short proximity of the city center through the escalator, just as the web site describes. I enjoyed the short walk to the historical center. I did have a bit of a hard time finding the hotel, but eventually got to it fine. There was free parking available. The city of Siena and it's surroundings are beautiful. Unfortunately, we had a bad experience with the people of Siena. Service in the restaurants was horrible. We were standing in one location and asked for a seat, and the waiter basically looked at us and turned the other way. When I got his attention and asked for a seat for two, he indicated they were booked for the night, although it was almost 10 pm, and the restaurant was half-empty. We passed by there about an hour later after we ate at a place that would serve us and the tables were still empty. I should mention that we are people of color and although I don't look for the "oppressor" or that person who is going to discriminate against us, it was pretty obvious that because we were not the typical couple on Holiday in Siena, we were not served. This is but one incident that occurred during our stay. The hotel, though, was wonderful.

Hotel Moderno is very well situated for a walking tour of the historic center of Siena. Parking, as in most of Italy, is scarce, but adequate. Finding the hotel by car is quite difficult, as is the case with most large Italian cities. Having a room that did not face the street was favorable as it had less noise. Some of the staff had better English language skills than others, so it was always an adventure to communicate effectively -- a common but manageable problem for American travelers.

Is a bit older and little threadbare in places, but very European and a quaint atmosphere. Staff seemed very helpful. We stayed there previously when two of us drove by and stopped by chance, and thought it was good value for the price, and very convenient to Siena without being in the town itself - walked into town in 5 mins. Could be a little noisy if you are on the road side. This time we stayed with two teenagers, and had a larger suite with 2 rooms, on the garden side. Was again good value for the price for a family room. A school group was staying there, and made some noise, but they quieted down fairly early. Breakfast ran out that morning, but was generally quite good.

The hotel was difficult to locate from the maps, and there is nothing close to the hotel for evening meals or drinks (unless you go into Sienna). The closeness to the escalator was nice. The staff were not friendly or inviting as we would expect as visitors to a foreign country. The hotel and room was very clean and adequate for getting a good night rest. The pictures of the outside are midleading. Breakfast was very good.

Staff was very nice. Location was okay in terms of the city, but good in terms of getting to the escalators up to the interesting areas. Rooms were clean but very small even by European standards and could only be described as basic. Not a place where I wanted to spend time--this may be due to the fact that our two rooms were singles. The public areas were okay.

Despite having a GPS unit with us and the address plugged in - we could not find the hotel. When we called he gave us one quick over view and stated that was all he could do for us we would have to ask someone else. Basically this was our welcome to the hotel. He was abrubt and bordering or rude and not helpful. When we arrived we received a warmer by abrubt treatment as well. We thought the people that ran the place were French not Italian but they later told us that they were indeed Italian. The room was small old and tired but adequate. The hotel is located near the giant escalator to the old part of the city. This makes the location nice. The breakfast is a nicer spread than many places but offers no protein options (typical for Italy). When we asked for a local pizza type place to eat they gave us two high priced restaurant choices (this was also typical of our stay in Italy).

First time stay. Very comfortable and reassuring place, and easy access via bus from railway station. Breakfast acceptable if a litte unimaginative. Set dinner good value, although you need not to be in a hurry. A short (uphill)walk away from the town centre, but quieter as a result. Piano in lounge out of tune and unplayable, recommend throwing over highest section of the city wall. Otherwise very nice place.

We are two moms and daughters staying in a quad room. The accomodations were as expected, clean and adequate. The room was not overly large but we were really looking for a place to sleep. My daughter and I enjoyed the fact that the escalators to get to the center of Siena were right across the street. It made the visit so much more enjoyable to be able to get up to the center of Siena easily. The gardens at Moderno were lovely. Wish we had more time to enjoy them.

Siena is wonderful. This hotel is very close to everything in Siena. We walked to everything, all major sites are about 5-10 minutes away by foot. This hotel was just okay. The room seemed clean but at some moments, there was some bad smelling odor coming out from nowhere which was pretty strange. Something else which was pretty strange was the absence of any delimitation to the shower which resulted in a total flood of the whole bathroom when I took a shower. However, the hotel, even if is out of Siena's walls, is very nicely located, thanks to the elevator, which takes you directly into the heart of Siena within a few minutes.

Too expensive. 110,- eur a double room with a wore out bed and a really stinky toilet. Plus, windows couldn't help keeping off the street's noise at night. Pros: good location (10 mt. away from the center) and nice breakfast room. Take it if you can't find another room.

This hotel is showing its age. The rooms are clean but in need of some renovations (peeling wallpaper, aging A/C). Other than that the staff was the friendliest i encountered in Italy. Parking is easy and there is an escalator (actually 5 in a row!) leading right up the hill to the center of town which makes it a great location for the price.

It had a really good location, and we had a room facing to the backyard, so it was quite quiet. And the hotel has parking included in the price. US citizens are not used to paying so much for a hotel. But by comparison to other Italian hotels this was a relative bargain. Only complaint was crossing the street to the steps to Siena. Very dangerous road that would benefit from a traffic light (blind curve). I would recommend this hotel. Davide the manager was very professional and courteous. Wonderful staff. Breakfast was standard Italian hotel fare (I prefer a cornetta and cappuciono at a bar).

Well located hotel just outside the city walls of Siena, however the staff we had to deal with on the reception desk were both rude and unhelpful. The only problem with this hotel, and the only reason for the low score on 'service,' derives from that central aspect of an hotel, the bed! The Moderno is an excellent place to stay, and I have done so twice in the past two months. My venere.com rooms were between 50 and 60 euros, and were small and just what I needed. Huge windows, lots of light, lots of soundproofing from outdoor noise. The room was nice and cool, clean, and comfortable. The bathroom consists of a wet room, which may take one or two tries to get used to. Clean, soft, large towels of the linen variety. I stayed there in September, after school was back in session, so the place was quiet. You will be able to hear whatever is going on in the hallway. The hotel decor very much reminds me of the better hotels in the United States National Parks, like Yellowstone. I felt at ease. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and kind. Their English is fine. The front desk was always there to help. The breakfast includes juices and coffee/tea, cold cereal, slices of cheese and ham, rolls, fruit, and sweet rolls. Nice. Skip dinner unless you want to be reminded what you will eat on any standard bus tour. Their risotto ai funghi, however, was great. The aforementioned escalator is located up top at the Chiesa di San Francesco. With the church on your right, go down the pathway and you will find the escalator. It drops you right at the door of the Moderno. An extra note: The Siena-Florence SITA buses that run back and forth all day long will drop you at the Moderno if you ask the driver to drop you at the S. Francesco scale mobile. The area around S. Francesco is fine, residential, easy to move around in.

The hotel was very clean, and had a very nice breakfast. The room was also large, and spacious for the four of us that stayed there, though the shower overflowed very easily. It is right outside of the city walls, and you must take an escalator or walk up a large steep hill to get up to town. This was the only really bad part of the hotel. ITs location is not prime, but the quality of the hotel is good. If you get lazy about leaving or walking to town, this location would not be good for you.

Hotel is a bit tired and 'Fawlty Towers'. The first room we had was poor for Air Conditioning but we were given good room when we complained. To be fair the staff were helpful and responsive.

Escalator infront of the hotel directly to the center -> great!

Huge, post-modern but nicely done. Strangely empty when we were there. Somewhat tired public spaces. Huge rooms, beautiful wooded view - huge bath. Across from weird space-age escalator walk-way through wall into central Siena - very convenient for outside the wall. German style continental breakfast i.e. cheeses, sliced meats, fruit, coffee, juice.

Very nice hotel, very convenient as close to the elevator to the center of Siena. Excellent breakfast and pretty nice rooms.

The place was very convenient to the main part of Sienna within the city wall. The one manager speaks great English and was extremely helpful, even arranged for us to go a pool at another hotel down the street. The room was nice and cool, the place was A+.

This hotel was exactly as described - older, small rooms, large comfortable public area, outside the city wall. VERY easy access to the center of town via the escalator which is indeed right across the street. Helpful staff. Nothing fancy but great for the price (and safe) - big breakfast, too, which is unusual.

The staff at Moderno could NOT have been ruder. They made no effort to welcome and were not forthcoming with helpful information. The breakfast was ok, but the same all 4 mornings. No one smiles at this hotel. We appreciated the location for easy access into and out of Siena (escalator up in to the town). It is unlikely that we would stay there again.

The air conditioning was very poor. The hotel is in need of complete remodeling.

Actually on a relatively busy street. Very easy to get to the center of town if you're ok for an up hill walk!

The hotel is in an ideal location for visiting the old part of Siena and also for exploring further south, highly recommended. We had a room at the back which was quiet but paint peeling round the edges. Directions to hotel were accurate and there was parking.

This is a clean, 1950's style building. If you're looking for a quiet escape from the activity of downtown Siena, this would be it. It is not as centrally located as it appears on the map; long escalator rides(five to be exact) followed by a 15 minute walk through some deserted streets is required to reach the main areas.

I trave extensively throut Europe and especially Italy I found this hotel to be not well eqiopped. The rooms were very small with no Air Conditioning and the room was facing a busy street. The only window opened to the street and so the choice was moderate traffic noise and a hot room or open the winow to a noisey street.

The staff at the front desk was rude and not helpful at all. The room was noisy 2 nights due to a large group of school children in the hotel. The other 2 nights were not as noisy.

The two features we liked best about this hotel was its close proximity to an escalator outside the city walls of Siena and the dining room was nicely done (although the food was only fair for dinner). Unfortunately, it seemed to be a hotel that has seen its finer days in the past, with the room furnishings and bathrooms being drab and not updated. The large lobby areas felt the same way, in need of some freshening up. While we were there a large tour group of teenagers were staying at the hotel and their night time antics in the hallways/elevator created a less than peaceful environment. We were happy to have only one night booked at this venue and on to the next city!

Photo was suggesting a more quiet place, but the hotel is along a busy road. But we had a room to the other side so it was o.k. The city center is easily and fast to reach from the hotel, although it is outside the city walls, that was perfect.

Hotel Moderno is exactly what you would expect for the price in terms of quality of rooms and service. It was fine for the money. However, the location is very nice because of its proximity to the escalators that take you up to the old city. It is not a chore to get into and out of the old city and enjoy a hotel as a lower cost as a result. For that reason we would recommend Hotel Moderno. If you are driving, be prepared to spend some effort finding the street. It is not that easy.
