The reviews we read about the hotel were all correct. A very nice hotel with parking (often a rarity in ancient cities), extremely friendly staff and large rooms. The restaurant was also quite good, although not much in terms of atmosphere. The only downside is that (as reported by previous guests) the walls are quite thin, but it did not interfere with sleeping. Very nice terrace from which to watch the sunset.

The Athena Hotel was very comfortable in all respects with the major exception of the catering. The breakfasts were mininal, and not of a quality one expects from 4 star hotel (lack fresh fruit, and juices, poor choice, etc.). The food at the hotel's restaurant, which we eat at on two occasions, was of poor quality, badly cooked and poorly presented, despite the relatively high price. The waiter service, however, was very good. The bar snacks were acceptable. The car parking facilities were reasonably good, and very useful with the centre of Siena being only 10 minutes walk away.

Just an OK hotel. Not much better than a convenience hotel near an airport. The location is good (not great) as it is a short walk to everything. We had a "superior room" that was just OK. Very noisy between rooms. The walls do not have very much sound proofing. The breakfast was typical of most hotels in Italy, just OK. The staff were great however. They were helpful and cheery from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. The beds and pillows were hard which was ok with me but not with my wife I would probably not stay again just because I like my hotels to match the charm of the area I am staying in. The value was ok as I was traveling with my two adult kids and would prefer not to spend $1000/night. It did the job.

Great Hotel, friendly & helpful staff. Internet didn't work well in rooms, but they took it off our bill at the end. Free parking, inexpensive internet, clean, close walk to center of town (10mins). GREAT!

As what you would expect from a 4* hotel. Only 10 mins walk from the square and duomo. We arrived by coach and it is about 20mins walk we were hand baggage only so we walked heavier baggage get a taxi left by taxi to train station. Taxi a must as it is some distance but only around 12 EUR fare.

Most enjoyable stay at Hotel Athena. All the staff were extremely pleasant, attentive and obliging. Location is very good with, for our room on floor 7, superb views. Breakfast is ample and varied, though tiny cartons of jam are not good and a little bacon occasionally would be welcome, to go with the scrambled egg! Dinner menu is based on local dishes and is good, with excellent service either in the restaurant or the floor 7 terrace. There's plenty of parking space - easy to get in, awkward to manoeuvre out - staff will help. Not far to the Duomo and Il Campo but bear in mind Siena is a hill town with consequences for walking if you have problems. We would certainly stay here again.

The hotel is comfortable, located in a quiet street and easy to reach when travelling by car. The staff is very helpful. There is somebody to park your car in a free parking lot. The restaurant serves a tasteful tuscanian food. The rooms are a bit noisy: you can hear your neighbours taking their showers, or babies crying.

We booked Athena based on its location close to the center of Siena, possibility to park your rented car close to the hotel and the comfort of the room. Athena proved to fit all 3 criteria and as a bonus then the luxury room proved to have an exellent view over the hilly surroundings. Roof terasse exellent for an afternoon cup of coffee or drink. For a good meal just walk up the road and round the corner. There you will find an excellent local italian restaurant. Menu is in italien, but just ask. Siena is a wonderfull piecefull town.

We were only in Siena for one night and picked Athena Hotel because of its location in the city walls. The hotel is of its 4 star rating based on its amenities. Our room was very spacious and clean. We were surprised that the hotel restaurant is only open for dinner from 7 to 9:30 which by european standards is very brief and early but we did not plan to eat there so it was not a major problem for us. The one thing that totally disappointed (I would say even ruined) our stay was the fact that our room was right above a kitchen and the noise (staff yelling and dishes clanging) at night and morning made it impossible for us to sleep. Also our queen size bed (though hard like all beds in Italy) was two full size mattresses pushed together...absolutely not what we expected from a 4 star hotel. If you stay there please make sure to ask for rooms away from any of their kitchen areas if you want to get any sleep. Just a comparison for you, our Bed & Breakfast in Florence was extremely quiet and had a proper queen size mattress for less than half the cost of this Hotel. We probably weren't recommend this hotel to anyone unless you are just interested in the full of a 4 star hotel and not the comfort.

While the Athena may, at first seem a bit far from where you enter the city, it is a jewel of a hotel. Clean, professional, great breakfast (actually the best we had in 18 days in Italy). Location is actually very close to where you want to be. The Athens is very close to the cathedral and main square. Staff were great.

This hotel is one of the nicest we incounted during our two week trip through Italy and France. Very convenient to walk to all of Siena's attractions. Park your car and forget it. Bellman will bring your luggage to your room. Sweet. Many restaurants, cafe's and shops nearby. The morning breakfast buffet is a good value at 9 Euros. I can't think of anything to complain about with this hotel.

We were very pleased with the quality of accommodation and service. Location was excellent. Athena is a beautiful hotel in a great location. Other reviews complained about the walk, but we did not find it bad, considering the entire city is very hilly. Our room was great, we booked the Double Superior and it had a lovely balcony. The WiFi was the best on our trip, although it is not free. Overall, it was one of our favorites on our trip to Italy. The Hotel also has a terrace with a wonderful view and free parking.

Nice hotel, good sized room. Ours was next to the staircase and a bit noisy. Parking garage is tight for in/out; may be better to use the external lots (although we can't complain about free parking!). Good full breakfast. The view from the rooftop bar was very nice. Hotel is close to city wall (makes arrival by car easy) and just 7 min walk to center.

The location of the hotel is great, a few minutes from the town centre and at the same time in a quiet area; easy to reach by car, also. Our room was on the 7th floor, the windows were high , at the top of the wall, but they overlooked a large sort of garden and no noise at all came from the outside. (I don't know about the rooms overlooking the street). The bathroom was big and full of light. There is a lovely terrace on that floor, with a fantastic view. The staff was kind and efficient. We enjoyed our stay there very much.

The Athena is located on the edge of the old part of Siena, next to an interesting cemetery that has fantastic views. It is a short walk to Il Campo and just a bit further to the buses. The hotel is deluxe, the staff extremely competent. Only when the youngsters on spring break in the next room began to party was there any noise & a call to the desk soon brought back the quiet. The rooms are huge. It was excellent value. The breakfast was gourmet & lots of it.

We were very pleasantly surprised by the Hotel Athena. Particularly due to the mixed reviews on the web sites. We were graciously received at check in in the evening. Parking was easily accessible. We were given a very large room (even for North American standards). We were told it was the largest they had for the standard room. Our stay was a total of four nights. Breakfast was very generous - hot and cold - eggs, pastries, bread, yogurt. About a 7 minute walk into the center of town, with shops on the way. The hotel is just in the old city walls, as stated. The only annoyance was there was no internet access in the room - we had to go into the lobby to check email from our laptop. Excellent stay - great quality for the price.

This is an excellent place to stay when visiting Siena, Italy. It is easy to reach when entering the city. We were parked on the street initially and the gentleman at the front desk even parked our car in their lot for us. It is located about 2 blocks from the main action of the city. Everything was very clean and the rooms were spacious. The bed was one of the most comfortable we slept in. Staff was very helpful and courteous. We needed to book a hotel in Rome for one night and the gentleman at the front desk was very nice and called to reserve us a room. We would definitely stay here again. Excellent value!!

In the middle of August, the air conditioning did not work. We called the girl and she said she would send someone up. No one came. Two hours later we called again. We asked for a fan. They sent a fan up and did nothing about the air conditioning. We slept with the window open and a fan and paid a lot of money for that room. The front desk people were not friendly and even were sort of making fun of us (snide). They were not helpful.

It should be ranked as 2 star hotel as the rooms need renewal urgently, the couch and the bedspread were worn out and dirty, the furniture looks from the 70s and the bathroom though clean needs fitting. I had not seen that kind of tiles and flash since I was little- 40 years ago. The only advantage of the hotel is the location, a 10 minute walk from the Cathedral- and it would be fine if it cost half the price and were ranked as 2 star.

After we'd negotiated the bus from Siena station and walked right across the city, we gratefully found the Athena roughly where the map said it would be. We were two couples, and allocated 2 double rooms, one which overlooked the road, and was fairly dark, and a second which was lighter and with a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside. We immediately asked to change the first room to one with a view and the very helpful desk clerk arranged it for us straight away, even though the hotel was busy. This room was smaller than the first with the tiniest bathroom ever, but it was worth it. The hotel has a great terrace where you can sit and watch the sunset with a bottle of wine, and turns into a restaurant some evenings, although we didn't eat there as it was fairly pricey. The inclusive breakfast was buffet style with a good range of pastries, meat, cheese and fruit, and the lounge and bar were nice enough with plenty of local info and newspapers to read. Siena isn't cheap, and the room felt small for the amount we paid (especially the bathroom), but the friendliness of the staff and the great location made the Athena feel like a good choice.

The room was too noisy from the room upstair. After requesting for checking, the officer informed that there were nobody?? The hotel was too far from the Piazza Gramci about a half an hour by walk.If you were travelling by bus, better chose other hotels.By the way,the room are clean and spacious and also good food.

I was there for the Palio and this location is great. Close enough to walk to all the major attractions within the wall but far enough away that you don't hear all the noise at night. Staff is very helpful and they provide free parking which is a big plus in Siena. Internet access in the rooms at a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed 3 nights just before the Palio and although the hotel was busy, we found the accomodation, service, facilities and location all to be excellent.

Un ottimo albergo vicinissimo al centro città. Grande professionalità e gentilezza alla reception. Il giorno della partenza, per permetterci di visitare ancora Siena ci hanno permesso di lasciare la autovettura nel loro garage.

Have stayed at the Athena several times. Good location - close to Siena centre but streets still wide enough for easy car access. Young man on reception very helpful when I needed an adapter to recharge my mobile phone. A good value mid-range hotel.

Staff were extremely welcoming, offering an upgrade and a choice of rooms. We were shown both rooms before having to decide (and opted for one with a terrace). The room was spotless and the bed very comfortable. Breakfast was good. Parking was excellent.

The quality of the rooms was infact much poorer compared to the pictures advertised. The noise from the street outside was very disturbing.

Nothing special here. The upscale traveler will be disappointed with quality and the budget traveler will be alarmed at the price. The roof top bar/cafe has ceased to exist. Easy to get to in a car and parking is provided. That is why we picked it for one night.

I really enjoyed the hotel. It is truly a 4 star. The outside appearence of the hotel may not look that great, but once you enter, it is very nice. The location of the hotel is close to all attractions at Siena that you can walk. The Taxi drivers in Siena are very nice, they are not trying to rip you off like the ones in Rome. In general, Siena and hotel are both great!!! Breakfast is a feast of buffet with both meat savory dishes as well as sweet French type of breakfast. Coffee great.

Rooms were spacious, well maintained and clean. Cold buffet breakfast of breads, pastry, cereal and yogurt was included in the room price, though some information said it wasn't available. Location is just inside the medieval walls. This provides spacious views of the country-side and a 10-minute walk through medieval streets to the tourist sites. There are also many good restaurants nearby.

The staff were pleasant, the common areas of the hotel were very nice. For the area, the price was moderate. Our room was clean but quite small, and the bed was very hard. The room's decor also needed updating badly. Overall it was tolerable but was the least favorite of the four hotels we stayed in while visiting Italy.

Good location, pleasant staff & good parking. Crticisms would be that the hotel was noisy at night and the bar never seemed to be open. Overall, worth it for the location.

When I arrived at the hotel, quite late, I didn't have enough euros to pay the driver and he wouldn't take a credit card. The woman at the front desk did her best to help me, which I appreciated, but the hotel policy would not allow her to advance me 15 euros against my credit card (which left me despairing). The staff in general was professional, but not at all friendly. I have to say that it was the least welcome I felt in my entire trip. As a woman traveling alone, having an indifferent staff probably seems worse than it would if I'd had a friend along. I was given a very spacious room, but being on the road side was rather noisy. The housekeepers were unbelievably loud, shouting at each other from opposite ends of the hall. When I looked out to let them know that not all the guests were out of the hotel, they lowered the volume a notch, but not enough for me to sleep in, which I would have liked. The front desk was very curt when I asked for a later check-out - telling me that they were fully booked (which clearly they were not). The housekeeper knocked on my door at exactly noon. The hotel's location was good for me. I don't like staying too close to tourist spots and I didn't mind walking the 5 minutes to town. The view from the terrace is really fantastic, but the only meal you can have there is dinner. Being October, it was already dark and chilly by then.

Great property. Great location on a quiet street only a few minutes walk to everything in Siena. Spacious rooms. We had a great view from our room of the hills below Siena. It's a new hotel relative to other properties in the area so it is clean, modern and very comfortable. The only small criticism I have is that the staff, though knowledgeable and helpful when prompted, were not overly warm and friendly.

My partner and I travelled for four weeks around Italy using venere.com and a few other on-line sites for all our hotel bookings, made usually on the spur of the moment during our travels. We had no problems at all, and in fact some great surprises. We didn't take any time at all when booking this particular hotel, we simply looked up 4*, and the location and booked quickly. On arrival following a very long drive, I must say I was impressed with the reception area, and was really looking forward to my nice bath and a relaxing evening. Especially since the receptionist had handed me a leaflet on the hotel services and the rooms looked excellent. The porter came to the car with me to assist with our luggage, which was significant (we'd been travelling for 3 weeks!) and then he simply disappeared! We waited for a while, then decided to go on up to our room as we needed the facilities. To say it was a nasty surprise when we arrived in the room would be an understatement. I actually thought we had somehow gone into another hotel. The room was dirty. It was small and dark and very grubby. It looked like no-one had been there for a very long time. I had no option but to use the bathroom, which was a major shock. They had crammed a loo and a bidet into a tiny space, and to sit on the loo, you had to engineer you way under the sink, which meant you were sitting with the sink taps under your nose! Not an easy feat! After some discussion, I did something I've never done before - I phoned reception and asked for a change of room. Do note that we are a couple who take 4 weeks off work each year and travel around either Europe, USA or the Far East, and we've learned a lot about hotels and their advertising, but we have NEVER felt the need to make a stand such as this. The receptionist was not pleased, put me on hold for a long time, and when she came back, asked if we had used the bathroom, and when I said yes, she said she couldn't change the room then, and that

Would not recommend this hotel. Terrible rooms - dirty and smelly. Poor breakfast. The hotel should have 2 stars maximum. Not 4! The only nice thing is the location and great small restaurant just on the corner on the way up to the center - Osteria Donna Gina.

This hotel was easy to find & the outdoor parking area was more than adequate for our needs so we didn't have to use the garage. All the staff we encountered during our stay (2 nights) were excellent. Our room was enormous and on the opposite side of the hotel to where the renovations were going on so was really quiet. Contrary to other reviewers' comments, our bathroom was fine. All the public areas were top notch. The location also could not have been better - about 10 minutes' walk uphill to the Cathedral & Campo. The only thing that let the hotel down was the watery fruit juice and excruciatingly bad coffee on offer at breakfast. There's no excuse for either in Italy and especially not in a 4-star hotel! We didn't have dinner in the hotel as we don't eat meat & there was nothing suitable on the menu. Would most definitely stay here again.

The great advantage of this hôtel is his location inside the city with a private and gratuit parking. Therefore, this parking is very difficult to find. A signalization of it would be very necessary for the entering is outside of the wall of city.

Very good 4 star hotel. Excellent quality-price relation. Free parking (in a private lot) - convenient if you arrive by car. Very nice reception. Very helpful staff. Our room had a WONDERFUL view of the toscany fields. Very wide, clean and nice room. Good bathroom. Good breakfast. About location, the hotel is inside the city's walls and about 8/10 min walking mostly uphill to the Duomo and 10/15 min walking to Il Campo (Piazza) (well, when going back after dinner it is mostly downhill). I'd stay there again and recommend it.

I stayed with my parents and aunt at the Athena for one night in May. The hotel was easy to find (once you found the correct porta) and within easy walking distance of the city center. The rooms were quiet, clean and fairly spacious. The best part was the open roof terrace- this provided a lovely place to rest, snack and look out over the Tuscan countryside. Ample on-site parking was a plus. Breakfast was typical continental fare- nice but nothing spectacular. I would stay at the Athena again.

Hotel staff was very competent and professional. On check-in, we were offered a cup of coffee which was delivered to us in the waiting room. We had arrived early, but our rooms were ready within 15 mins. The view from my room was gorgeous. I would recommend the Hotel Athena to anyone traveling to beautiful Siena.
