Great hotel, location is perfect. Just a couple minutes walk from the train station, but on the very quiet street , overlooking the sea and surrounding hills. View from the room is unbeatable. Has a little balcony where you can enjoy a glass of wine ( unfortunately was too cold to when we were there). Price was reasonable for the view and the nice room you get, however it was the off season price,so I can see how it can triple the price during summer. Overall pleasant stay. We had breakfast include in the room cost, however did not have time to eat it, so can't speak for the food quality.

Lovely "old world" Italian resort ambience. Because we had a corner room, we had a little more space (especially drawers/shelves)than the usual small European(by-American-standards)standard double room. We were offered an upgrade to a better-positioned sea-view room, but decided against as we had a partial sea-view from our balcony. Very clean & appropriately equipped, fabulous breakfast buffet on the patio, helpful & friendly staff, great location for walking to town and private beach if weather is good. Very short walk to train station for visits to Cinque Terre or boat to Portafino. Would definitely recommend and stay there again.

The location and staff of this hotel were excellent. We had wonderful breakfasts on the outside terrace. Despite being on the main road our rooms were very quiet. Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and accommodating. Being very close to the train station and the town center was a definite plus. We would highly recommend this hotel and would certainly return.

Enroute to Lucca I decided to visit Santa Margherita Ligure, a charming town located between Portofino and Camogli that reviewers rated it a good base for visiting the Cinque Terre and coast and relatives in Comogli. As my usual preference I looked for a good place close to the train station and chose Hotel Metropole. It didn’t disappoint. Located about 150 meters below the train station Hotel Metropole offers an oasis on its expansive grounds with lovely gardens, a sea view and outstanding service. My single room was in the”villas” reached by a cobbled jasmine covered pathway down the hill from the main building. The villa had 6 rooms, most facing the water, but without balconies. My windows opened to the Santa Margherita Harbor and I enjoyed the sound of the waves and at night the sparkling lights around the bay and the promenade. Housekeeping service was impeccable and included nightly turn-down service. For muting sound and added security the room had 2 locking doors. Breakfast was served on the outdoor terrace and in addition to an array of fruits, pastries, cheeses, meats and cereals, sparkling wine was offered. As others have said, the staff was very nice and very helpful. It was so relaxing and enjoyable I was really sorry to leave so soon. Now that I experienced Hotel Santa Margherita Ligure I am planning next year’s stay, with added days to enjoy the other amenities like the spa, and Turkish bath and enjoy the beach.

The Metropole has the ambience of a 1960's guest house. So for those seeking the formality, extra service and nostalgia for a time when travellers were truly treated as guests then The Metropole is for you. With its diverse range of room formats it is ideal for family travellers seeking a restful break in a perfectly located facility.

The room was very clean, the location of the hotel is excellent, breakfast on the terrace was wonderful and with parking for the car it was everything we needed. We did not expect the beautiful garden area or the spa center so that was a plus. The area by the beach is aslo beautiful

Fantastic hotel! Highly recommended! It is 5 minutes from the center of S. Margherita Ligure, overlooking the sea and a landscaped garden. Staff were polite, helpful and professional. Very grateful to them for the tip to walk to Portofino instead of taking the car. I don't regret having booked the parking space as there is little nearby parking available. Breakfast is excellent. Free wifi, gym and hammam is a welcome extra!

This is a well-run hotel with helpful, hardworking and courteous staff. The staff's command of English was such that it made for a more relaxing stay for visitors with very limited ability to speak Italian. The restaurant was quite formal but not suffocatingly so and with a staff that was very successful in their various skills.

This hotel is a wonderful place to stay in Santa Margherita Ligure. The grounds and location near the sea is beautiful with flowers and gardens. Great breakfast buffet was included in the price but all the other food areas were extremely expensive. The rooms are very clean and spacious and the working staff was responsive to any needs. However, having said that, I felt the male staff behind the reception area was a bit snobbish and not very friendly. The one lady that worked there was the only one that even smiled when you requested information and she was very helpful. I also was disappointed in that I thought the hotel had Wi-Fi in order to use my computer but it was not available in the rooms. You had to go to a large conference/meeting room area to use which was terribly inconvenient. There is absolutely no reason why a hotel of this level and cost does not have Wi-Fi in the rooms!

We arrived a day early and asked for a quiet room and the receptionist gave us a lovely room overlooking the beautiful colourful and lush gardens. The staff were also very helpful with providing time tables and tickets for the bus to Portofino. The terrace at the sea needed some maintenance and that was being attended to while we were there. It is currently my favourite hotel in Europe!

I was in the old section of the Metropole but to my surprise it was the perfect location. The window opened to an incredible water view and the room although small was fine for one night. The bathroom was clean and shiny marble and the facilities in general provided room to roam and take advantage of numerous sitting areas. The main town was a few blocks away with buses to Portofino. So glad I didn't drive there as the road was very narrow and twisting along the coastline with barely any room for cars to pass. The 1 euro fare was well worth it. Breakfast was included and had a very nice assortment of hot and cold selections including scrambled eggs. On site parking was additional but necessary as there's very little parking around. Lot's of places to eat in Santa Margherita, in fact I liked this town better than Portofino which everyone seems to prefer. Santa Margherita is larger, offers a variety of shopping and eating and has a ferry that shuttles you to Portofino and other areas.

For those that have been to the UK, this hotel is Italy's answer to Eastbourne - great for "mature" couples, not amazing for young couples. However the staff are very welcoming, the location is fantastic for walking into the town and if you get one of the rooms with a balcony, then it would be a pleasant place to stay, though slightly pricey for what you get.

We had a wonderful stay here, altough too short. We walked to Portofino which is about 5km's around a sensational coast line and then caught the ferry back. The cost of food at Portofino was exorbinant espcially at the warf area, but the setting is sensational. The staff at the hotel were wonderful, very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. This hotel is in a great location, just 5 minutes from the train station, 5 minutes from the main bus terminal and the town of Santa Margherita Ligure. Great base for Cinque Terre. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with a very appealing pool area. I would request a shower only room, not shower/bath combination, as the bathtub is very narrow and awkward. Excellent restaurant service/food, very accommodating to special requests. Only complaint was the grout in the bathroom needed replacing but it didn't spoil our stay.

Fine light-filled corner room with huge closets and well-appointed bathroom looked out through a beautiful garden onto the blue bay. Small balcony with two chairs was a charming place to rest and relax. We appreciated the large and varied breakfast buffet and the central location. Pool looked a little small, but you're right on the beach, and it was a bit too cool for swimming anyway. Hey, we loved the place. Except . . . The WiFi system serves only the public areas and costs an exorbitant 5 Euros per half hour. At the prices it's charging, The Metropole needs to free itself and its customers from this ridiculous policy and offer connectivity everywhere gratis.

The staff were excellent and very helpful with my 'tourist' questions. I stayed at the villa, which had a lovely, spacious room, with a bath, which is rare in Europe. My view from the window was directly onto the ocean. The hotel is in an excellent location so I could see the entire of Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino in the distance. The grounds the hotel owns are huge and beautiful. It is very convenient with the train station maybe 50 m away. There are big rooms to relax and read which is nice. The value for money is excellent. I have paid the same price for other hotels in Italy and they were mediocre compared to this. I am a student and had a budget so when I had supper at the hotel restuarant I wanted something within my budget. I did feel very uncomfortable when the staff were trying to force me to have something to expensive but eventually things were sorted out.

Only stayed for one night but found the Metropole a good quality hotel. Staff were relatively friendly, helpful and efficient. The room was fine although the decor was a little dated and the shower too small. Sky Sports on the t.v. was welcomed! Breakfast was very good and enjoyed a very nice lunch in the outdoor restuarant overlooking the sea. The sunbathing and swimming areas looked inviting! At €200 for the night it wasn't budget accomodation but Santa Margherita is not cheap so the Metropole comes recommended.

we stayed at this hotel for a week. It was quite expensive but worth the money the whole area is more expensive than other parts of Italy and we were prepared for that. The gardens and the terrace were delightful and very well maintained .The staff were friendly and helpful, the only thing we found odd was the restaurant manager came round at breakfast time taking orders for the evening meal when he realised we were not interested in eating at the hotel he more or less ignored us. Lots of the other guests did eat there but it looked very expensive and did not seem to offer much choice, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in Santa Margherita which is a really lovely place to stay and base yourself to explore the local area.

This was our first stop on our Honeymoon. 6 days to relax by the water before moving on to Florence. Santa Margherita was like we stepped into a oil painting. Words can not decribe. The hotel Metropole is at the one end of the town so not in the hustle and crowds but a two minute walk to the center. The staff at the hotel was wonderful to us but most of all Luigi. This unasuming man quietly made our trip extra special. He was our waiter at dinner but without request brought champange and cream puffs to our room. The next day suprised us with breakfast in bed. It's the small things that make a good hotel into a great hotel and this is a great hotel with traditional, unwavering standards of good quality and attention to detail in all respects such as bedroom maintenance twice daily and plenty of bathroom appointments including large, fluffy bath towels. The hotel is overseen by the proprietor,a bon viveur and interested gentleman, who makes guests as welcome as he would in a private house and all the staff, from the gardeners to the concierge are courteous and helpful. We stayed for a week on a Half Board basis and the food was tasty, varied and efficiently served by all the waiting staff under the supervision of a very attentive and extremely professional head waiter Antonio Pisani and the excellent buffet breakfast catered for all tastes and appetites! Our bedroom(in the separate Villa part)had a stunnung sea view with the waves lapping under our windows and the room itself was large, with more storage space than was needed and 'proper' hangers in the wardrobe-not those fixed ones that are so complicated to take off the rail. There was even room for a very effective trouser press. The hotel is very convenient for the town and railway station and is set in the most beautiful, immaculately tended gardens, with its own beach and sea-bathing facilities as well as a swimming pool and fitness centre. We enjoyed every moment of our stay at this excellent hotel and can't wait to return again in the future and we would most definitely recommend it.

The hotel was lovely. The staff were all very accomodating and welcoming. The room was a little smaller than we expected, but very clean and comfortable. Eventhough we were given the room directly outside the elevator, it was very quiet. The view from our balcony was beautiful. I do wish that we had come a month earlier as the grounds were not as beautiful as the pictures. We did purchase internet service and had to wait a while due to only one computer. It was situated in a phone booth and there was not much room for two people to sit. The keyboard was sticky and hard to use. We purchased half board(not really knowing what that meant)and the lovely gentleman that checked us in that afternoon was quick to tell us that it meant that one meal of our choice (not just beakfast)came with the room. We elected to have dinner in the hotel that evening. The fish and chips that my husband ordered was not what we are used to in the states, but the rest of the meal was very good and the service was excellent. Breakfast the next morning was served on the terrace and was very, very good with a large assortment on the buffet. Again, the service was excellent. We would highly recommend this property to others and would stay there again. Keep in mind that if you arrive by train, while the property isn't far away at all (too close to take a taxi),it is up hill all the way and you have to navigate two very high, fast moving traffic areas while carrying your luggage to reach the property. There is a large map outside the train station indicating where the different hotels are located, which was very helpful.

We enjoyed the stay at the Hotel Metropole very much. Especially, the location in S. Margherita overlooking the bay is gorgeous. The park is unique, only the facilities at the ocean needed a makeover, which was started when we left. The doubke room facing the water was excellent, the single room facing the garden was a bit small. The service was excellent all the time. We will come back for sure.

The hotel is on the beach with a beautiful setting of S. Marg. We stayed here at the end of our 3 weeks in Italy and it was perfect to unwind and relax. It more expensive than the hotels we stayed previously, but worth it at the end of our trip. Staff-very, very good. Rooms, spacious and very nice. Breakfasts, wonderful. EHK

Travelling by train this hotel was excellently placed for us being a very short walk from the station. We can highly recommend this hotel. Sadly the road passing close by is very busy but they have installed double glazing so with the windows shut the constant sound of traffic does not intrude. Our room overlooked the gardens and had a sea view so we weren't directly over the road. We would quite happily stay there again.

We really enjoyed our stay at Metropole. It was easy to find and in a great location. Our first night was spent in the main building and although we had a view of the garden and the ocean, the room was very close to the main road. It was very warm, and because we were there in early April the air conditioning was not turned on in the hotel yet. Needless to say we had to sleep with windows open and there was so much road noise we couldn't sleep. We asked to switch rooms and they accomodated us wonderfully by moving us to the building on the ocean which was spectacular. The hotel staff was very accomodating and gave us some good recommendations for dinner. We would definitely recommend Metropole to others.

The hotel is not new, nevertheless the bath tub was very very small and the shower had to be hand held as the fixed position meant that the water was not aimed in the right direction ie the user's body.

Hotel Metropole was a nice place to stay. It was a little pricey for what we got, but perhaps that had to do with going at the highest season. The room was clean and reasonably comfortable. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The location is good--2 minutes walk to the center of town, the the ferry to Cinque Terre/Portfino/Rapallo, and very close to the train station--although there's no easy way to get there from Genoa airport (in retrospect I would travel to Santa Margherita by train). If you have any debates about where to stay in the area, I would recommend Santa Margherita over Portofino, Rapallo, or Cinque Terre and I would definitely consider staying at the Metropole if travels brought me to Santa Margherita again.

Nice property, it grew on us as the stay progressed. Rooms are a little older style, in the Italian way, but the hotel has clearly had recent investment on leisure facilities. Overal clean, and clearly well run.

fantastic hotel. great location, right on the beach. i stayed in the villa porticcola which was apart from the hotel and a little cheaper/older but still clean and closer to the sea (you can hear the water as you go to sleep). Gym and pool good - beach area great. Great location in Santa Margherita - a beautiful town where i have worked 2 summers. highly recommend this hotel. close to train aswell.

Our stay at the Hotel Metropole was one of the best of our vacation. After staying at several other hotels on our trip, the Metropole was a refreshing change. The staff and the service as well as the hotel grounds made this one of the highlights of our trip. I an sure you could blame some of our wonderful feelings on Santa Margherita Ligure itself, what a beautiful town. We WILL go Back.

We booked 4 rooms, two rooms were beautiful and spacious, however the other two rooms were very small and not as nice. We paid the same price for the rooms and they were not equal. We were very disappointed in the equality of rooms as the same prices.
