Excellent location, good quality for the money. The staff is not especially helpful and sometimes they seem hardly competent. Most windows open to the wall of the next building except those rooms to the back of the hotel.

The Hotel Grant is very conveniently located with Union Square only 3 blocks away, the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf is at the first cross street. It is very clean and comfortable and there is a lovely Japanese restaurant Sushi Tomi one door away.

We found the Hotel Grant staff welcoming, the room easy on the eye, clean and comfortable, bathroom functional. Importantly there was a disabled access and lift. I have severe arthritis and do not like to climb stairs, so the disabled entrance was good and the fact the hotel had a lift. Also the top floor was floor 5 which meant that in an emergency I could get down the stairs. I felt it represented value for money. It was well situated in regard to visiting attractions, finding cafes, restaurants etc. The breakfast was sufficient to break the fast and if you needed to get away in a hurry. I loved the Japanese restaurant one door away from the hotel.

The stay at the Grant Hotel was very disappointing. The Hotel smelled like urin, also the rooms. My clothes smelled really badly after returning home. The Hotel was unbelievably noisy. We could here everything that was going on in the rooms next to us and in the hallway. We were woken up every morning EARLY because of other guests and housekeeping cleaning rooms. The guests who stayed next to us liked to watch television late at night and this kept us awake. I have never slept as little in any other Hotel. Also there was no information in the hotel room. We did not know the number to front desk or how to call room to room. The staff was not very help full, and they all seemed very indifferent. I find it very strange that the staff didn't say hello, or goodnight or whatever whenever we entered the Hotel. They didn't even look up from the computer, and there where no other guests there. One of the receptionists was acting unprofessional by being in a bad mood and clearly showed us that calling for a cab to the airport was a hassle. The only positive thing I can say about the Grant hotel is the location. Besides of this the Hotel was expensive compared to service and the product we received.

The room is nice and Location is very safe. The staff was warmhearted. There few grocery stores near the hotel, so it seems better to buy your snack, if you need, at Walgreens near the centre of the city (ex. Union Square)

The best that can be said about this awful place and our bare bones room is that it had a bed, although the room was so small that we kept bumping our knees into it. No coffee maker, no hair dryer, no wi-fi, one towel per guest..etc. We inquired about getting some heat in the room because it was chilly when we got there. We were told that they controlled the heat and because they didn't think it was cold enough to turn it on, we (and the other people that were cold)weren't getting any heat. Which brings me to the front desk personnel. It was fitting as well that the ones that spoke English weren't friendly and the ones that may have been friendly didn't speak English. Overall, this was a miserable stay at a place I would not recommend to my enemies. I was enticed by the price but trust me, pay a little more and stay anywhere but here.

Really nice hotel, very close to Union Square. The heating is working by means of some automatic system, so the person in the reception cannot turn it on (it should turn on automatically by itself) - the only con. Breakfast (pastry and tea/coffee) is really nice. Tea/Coffee is available all the time for free too.

Wonderful location (only up to a very steeply road), lot of restaurants, pubs and shops just 1 minutes far from the hotel.Safe neighbours also to walk in the night. Wireless only works in the hotel hall but there is a public network (5$/day) that can be used from the rooms. The staff does his best to be kind, somethimes without completely succeeding ! I would reccomend this hotel to couples also with children who are looking for a cheap, well located, quite and clean accomodation in San Francisco. Good car rental (national and alamo) just in front of the hotel, very kind staff, good prices.

Excellent Hotel, not so expensive, very well located near union square. The hotel is very clean and quiet. Too bad the parking is opposite the road and quite expensive; no wifi in the room and a forgettable breakfast. Overall, it is a good opportunity if you want to stay a couple of days in S.F.

The hotel was the worst memory of my trip to San Francisco. The location near Union Square is the only good point of this hotel. I think I had the worst room of the hotel, small, not clean, dark, with a window and a wall just behind at 50 cm... And all for 100$ per night... One day before we were in Vegas in a luxury room for 50$ per night. What a contrast !

Good value for money. The hotel is very well located in dowwntown San Francisco, 50 m to Powell Street with its Cable Car. The Hotel has no breakfast room, but offers a complimentary coffee/tea cum muffins at the reception. There are two PCs for free IN access in the reception area. The room we were in was spacious with a big bathroom. If one does not expect a deluxe accomodation but a clean, comfortable one at a good price in a good location, this is it.

Lovely and nice priced place to stay! Highly recommendable! Walking distance to shops in downtown, and got a Alamo car rental just across the street (750 Bush Street). The staff is very friendly and helps if you got any questions whatsoever. My girlfriend and I, stayed for 3 days, and is comming back in a month. The rooms are nice and well sized, and got a digital safe, which is free of charge! There are to up to date mac. computers in the lobby, free to use, and wireless access in the lobby as well. Unfortunately the wireless connection only works in the lobby, but there is chairs, couches and tables. The only very small minus is the breakfast that only contains doughnuts, muffins and danish, tee and regular coffee. Would be nice with some cornflakes or other non-sugar product. But its for free! :) Do you need a nice, well located and cheap place to stay, this is where you wanna go!

Great hotel! great location! our flight came in early in the morning and we asked if we could check in early (around 10am) because we had jetlag (after 20 hours of flying. they had the room ready in a jiffy! the room was pretty small but i guess all the rooms in the area for that price range is about the same. free internet in the lobby, nice place! free pastries, coffee and tea. very good location, literally one block from union square.

Pros: -central location -cheap -free coffee and baked goods in the morning, decent quality -refrigerator, safe, and hair dryer in the room -didn't need the lobby computer terminal, as Grant's wi-fi was free and OK strength in room -parking across the street is 1/2 price for guests, about $24.00/24 hrs. -clean room, clean bathroom, huge walk-in closet, GREAT BED! Cons: -when we arrived, the room had a strong chemical cleaner type smell that we eventually beat down with incense. The main hallway downstairs had a stink too, sort of an old building stink reminiscent of pee, although it was raining and that might have contributed to the scent -for some reason our key needed to be reset each day, we kept getting locked out of our room -the main lobby and reception desk area have a bit of a grungy look, nothing a coat of pain or some elbow grease and vinegar wouldn't fix

An excellent place to visit S. Francisco and spend few money!!

The hotel was exactly as described. What the room lacks in size and amenities, more than makes up in location and price. A hair dryer and iron would be a plus, but made due without. The room is a little loud, but it is also in the center of the city, so it was expected. The continental breakfast was a great way to save money!

At first glance the hotel seems pretty shabby, though eventually you get good value for money. It is clean, and most of the other guests seemed to be ok folks. The staff was certainly helpful though not all of them possessed best command of English. Though the room had a private bath, the sink was located inside the room itself and not in the bathroom, which was strange but not too bad.

Great location, spitting distance from the Powell St cable car. clean and spacious rooms. washing basin in the room not in the bathroom which I find strange. free wifi in the lobby. "breakfasts" very basic, a muffin or a danish and drip coffee :-/ luckily there are some food better places around (try the one 1/2 block down Powell St) the street may be noisy at night, which is particularly annoying when you're jetlagged and struggle getting asleep. overall, good value.

The hotel definitely falls in the older quaint category, but I was pleased with the overall experiance. I booked (and paid for) a room with a queen bed, but our room actually had a double bed - not a queen. I didn't bother to question it until checkout and the receptionist insisted that it really was a queen size bed in that room. I didn't complain earlier because we were happy with the location, price, and we didn't want to pack up to switch rooms. The price and location were great for a casual weekend trip to San Francisco. We had easy access to public transportation and went everywhere we planned to visit. We didn't miss not having a rental car one bit. The BART station was about six blocks downhill from the hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again, but I would check the size of the bed a little more closely before I unpack.

My boyfriend and me we had a fantastic stay in San Francisco. The Grant Hotel was perfectly located for what we planned to do. Just around the corner the cable car stopped, Union Square was only a few hundred meters away and many other things are in walking distance. Just be careful if in terms of what you expect for breakfast. You will sit in the lobby, eating Croissants, Muffins and Donuts with a coffee or tea. No cheese, no bread or that kind but still ok. However, we were absolutely happy with what we had at Grant Hotel and I would stay there again.

Location is this hotel's best feature - it's two minutes from Union Square, and just minutes from Chinatown, the Financial District and Market Street. So of course there are dozens and restaurants and shops all around. The hotel itself is not fancy but very nice. The rooms are of decent size (though not big), the bathrooms are spacious and very clean. The staff was nice and generally helpful. There was no real breakfast, but the hotel did provide pastries every morning in lobby. It is not a romantic place, but if you are looking for a clean and modestly priced hotel in central SF, Grant is a great option.
