The hotel was of the older style and reasonably small. It was well located just near China Town and a short walk from Montgomery Metro station which is also convenient to catching a train to the airport. (Are those BART trains noisey or what?) The room was of a good size but lacked a fridge but despite the size, the bed was placed almost against a wall. The major downside of this place is that the street is noisey at unexpected times - trucks collecting garbage from nearby restaurants with bottle clanking and reverse warning buzzers sounding! Also passing weirdos expounding their world views at 3.30am.

For a low cost option its an excellent choice. Hotel is clean, modern and rooms are fine and fairly spacious. Staff are very helpful, kind and welcoming. Best of all - great location right in the heart of downtown so you can walk to so many places or easily get a cable car or bus, the best area of SF for tourists. Lots of food options nearby and shopping and Starbucks next door! Its true, its only 2 blocks from the BART line for airport transfer or market street and others for cable car or bus - so a max 10 minute walk.

The room on the Grant street was very noisy. Otherwise, the room was very clean.

At first glance, the room seems old fashioned but it is in fact comfortable, klean and quiet. The hotel situation in downtown is remarquable, just beside Chinatown main entrance. As it was our first visit to the States, we had to get used with the fact there is no breakfast available but there are plenty of places for it nearby and it is a good way to immerge into the citie's life. Nice place for individual tourists. I would come back there with pleasure.

Stayed twice in this hotel, in room on 2nd and 4th floors. It's not exceptionally noisy there but I would recommend requesting a higher floor where possible as it reduces noise from the street.

Convenient area and well-priced for that area, clean and functional, but nothing special. Rooms were small, noisy street, tiny bathroom, etc.

Good location. They give us the smallest room but for two days it worked just fine.

Good choice, good location: close to cable car, chinatown, union square, shops, and a very decent, safe, clean place.

Hotel Baldwin is a great value. The location is pretty much unbeatable for the price. I got it for $89/night in mid-February. It's right next to the Chinatown gate, Union Square, and 15 min. walk to Fisherman's Wharf. Rooms are small but clean and comfortable. There is some street noise, and some noise from the halls, but nothing unusual. The girl at the desk was knowledgeable about the city and friendly. We saw a variety of people at the hotel, looked like international tourists. It's a Euro-style hotel, so if you've stayed in typical European hotels it will be familiar. Parking is $22/day, pretty reasonable, but garage is about 2 blocks away. You can come and go with your car as you please though. There are a couple of nice wine bars across the street. Overall, for the money I don't think you could do much better.

I really enjoyed my stay here. It is a small, old-style hotel with friendly staff. It is very well located for shopping and transport. It was incredibly clean. I loved my room and the claw-foot bath in the bathroom.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Baldwin. It is located centrally, right at the gate of China Town. We enjoyed our stay very much and would definitely come back to it when visiting San Francisco again.

Unless we are staying at a destination resort, my wife and I look for clean, comfortable, well-maintained properties in a good location with helpful staff. The Baldwin fit our requirements to a "T". As advertised, it was only steps away from the Grant Street entry to Chinatown with North Beach a short walk and Fisherman's Wharf a much longer but pleasant hike. It was only a couple of short blocks from Market Street and mss transportation via Bart, bus and trolley. We have generally stayed at small boutique hotels and bed & breakfasts when in San Francisco, but this was a last minute whim-trip and our usual haunts were taken. Next time the Baldwin will be our first choice.

It's a nice boutique hotel, great location and decor, very quaint, clean average size room, newly renovated bathrooms are white and very clean and comfortably-sized. the only downside is there's no bellman to help with the luggages. carry your own. knowledgable staff on tourist information. Sear's fine food at powell street is a great place to eat. they have diner food but a notch better than normal diners. it's been around sice 1939. be there before 9am for breakfast, the line to get a table builds up after 9am! another good diner is pinecrest along Mason street. it's open 24 hours.

I loved this hotel! We got a room with the clawed foot bathtub. Our view wasn't great (alleyway) but the rest of our room was fantastic. I have worked at 5 different hotels, in different states and this was one of the best hotels I have seen in a long time especially for its price. And the people at the front desk were immensely helpful, which was important because I had to make it to a Visa apt. by 10:00am and we were running late but they checked us into our room early and gave us excellent directions to the French Embassy! In the end, if you don't mind a bad view from the room everything else is just great and it is the hotel that I would recommend to any of my friends visiting San Fran.
