Very simple - AVOID. Yes, it is in the center and yes it is affordable. Still, rather rent a car, and for the price difference find a cheaper, better place outside the center.

I read the reviews before booking but was disappointed; paper bath mat; very small; very squeeky and uncomfortable bed - double (not king as indicated when reservation made); no hair dryer; no digital TV only 7 stations. Elevator is scary sounding. Breakfast although the same every day was good value. Location was fantastic at entrance to Chinatown. Hotel needs upgrading badly. Parking expensive at $22/day.

Posizione molto comoda per visitre la splendida san francisco, vicino sia al centro città sia alle fermate dei tram per poter girare coi mezzi pubblici. Le stanze sono un po' antiquate e potrebbero essere un po' piu' pulite!

Was a decent place to stay, especially if you're on a budget. My room did NOT have a working deadbolt lock on the door. This was "fixed" by the use of a chain. The location was close to everything, right around the corner from Chinatown which can be good or bad depending on the time of day and how many tourists are there.

the hotel location is so exotic!!! it's in Chinatown!!!that was so great!!! the staff is really nice and helpful. We stayed for a week end in San Francisco and the hotel was perfectly located for all the stuff we wanted to do.

Excellent value for money. Room and facilities perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable, staff sufficiently helpful and friendly. Surroundings safe and clean. Within walking distance (even with luggage) to central hubs (e.g. Powell MUNI, Union Square) and attractions. (Elevator a bit shaky, and license has expired, but not hazardous). Don't expect a full English breakfast, but the "continental" breakfast is up to standard. If you are on a budget, I would recommend the Astoria without hesitation, and would definitely stay there again. Very convenient for Chinatown, and laundromat, shopping, food, cablecars... all close by. Within easy walking distance of conference venues, if you want to save on overpriced accommodation for conferences.

We only stayed for one night and therefore it was quite okay. But do not expect to much!! I´d recommend it for young people!

The hotel is very well located and the employees at front desk are helpful. Unfortunatly, it was very noisy (we let the window open because it was hot)and the last night, we've been very scared because we heard someone trying to enter our room by the window. But, in general, it was OK and I will certainly return there if I go back to SFO one day.

This hotel is great for people who want a great deal for a great location. Our room was clean, comfortable, and had a great view of the city. We found the big city noise exciting, and the proximity to local attractions perfect. We could walk to China Town, Union Square, or Powell Street within mintues. Great for people who are looking for a place to sleep in San Francisco, who spend their days sightseeing.

Pictures say more than words but in this case they tell the wrong things. We booked because of the really nice pictures but at the end it has been less nice BUT overall it was really OK. What I want to say is that you should not expect to much from some good made pictures! It is a Chinese managed hotel (at the entry of Chinatown that shpuld not be a surprise ;) ). So I felt like being in Beijing again ;). For me it was OK but as I said the pictures promised more than we get at the end. Continental breakfast were not what we expected (and the breakfast room is very small --> If you get there at the "wrong" time you have to stand). Would I go again? For a good price "Yes". The location is OK. 5-10 Minutes to Cable car station and 0,25 Minute to Chinatown. The rental car station (Al... and Nat...) is only ~15 Minutes away what also was one reason to book.

This is the first time that we stayed in the Hotel Astoria. We stayed in a double room with en-suite. When we arrived the man at reception arranged everything for us and went the extra mile to let us know what trams/buses to get on. He also made the suggestion not to go down to the Civic Centre after 7pm because of a high crime/homeless rate around there - something we were glad to find out! The hotel is what we expected - and very pleasant for the price. Breakfast costs $4 but we chose to eat out in the mornings. As you may have read previously the hotel is very close to China town and literally 5 minutes walk from the main shopping streets which is fantastic but the rooms can be slightly noisy. I only mean the occasional horn from a passing cab. The San Fransisco drivers are very impatient!! The room was clean when we arrived and cleaned/made up daily or as needed and we really felt this place is value for money!

The hotel is very well located, you can go by walk to the main attractions of the city. Part of the staff doesn't speak english and can result a little bit odd.

Hotel Astoria is right next door to Chinatown, literally, just walk out the front door and turn the corner. Excellent location! Seems like some rooms could be noisy but ours was not. I think the Astoria is probably a very good value for San Francisco, we paid $70 per night total, so you can't expect it to be the St. Francis (ah, the St. Franicis!) but for the money it seemed reasonable. Again, great location, reasonably friendly and competent desk personnel. However, the room is very small, like an inexpensive European hotel, the bed was worn out, major sagging that gave my wife a back ache, and the room had a faint unpleasant odor. I'm 50 but don't mind staying in budget accommodations, preferring to spend my budget on food & entertainment. I probably would not stay there again but you get what you pay for. If this is all you can afford, it's not awful, as some reviewers have suggested. I have also stayed at the Grant Plaza, which is inside Chinatown. The rates are similar to the Astoria but I liked it much better. However, I recall that the rooms on the top floor (7th?) of Grant Plaza were much better than those in the rest of the hotel. But this was 15 years ago, it could have changed significantly since then although it still looks the same.

website said breakfast was included, but it wasn't- was told the site had "made a mistake" and I would have to pay extra for breakfast. I was given it free a couple of times, but the site should correct this error. Also the map was completely incorrect, which was not only unhelpful but potentially unsafe for a lone female arriving in a strange city at 10pm. (the directions were correct though)

Excellent location, nice hotel, price-quality is excellent! I will stay here next time as well. I stayed here with my friend, our first time in San Francisco. The room was ok - MUCH better than we expected, based on the price we paid. The location is suberb. Quiet and close to everything. The staff was nice, even though some do not speak English (breakfast service). The breakfast was ok as well (bagels, muffins, toast and coffee) and if you want something else, the closest Starbucks is on the other side of the street. Highly recommended!

Value for money for budget travellers, helpful and courteous staff, excellent location and improvement needed on the mattress as one of them was already soft in RM608, more soundproofing needed from traffic noise especially bad around midnite otherwise all's fine.

I have done a lot of traveling, and I am not picky, but I would not stay here again. The hotel rooms were very noisy. There wasn't a clock in the room. I asked for a clock and was told the hotel didn't offer this ammenity. We were only given one key to the room and when I asked for another one, I was told that there were no extra keys. The continental breakfast was a joke. When I tried to take a muffin and a cup of coffee to my room, the "attendant" stood in front of the door and blocked my way because of a "no food in rooms" policy. The staff at the front desk was extremely rude, in fact they acted like they were doing me a favor by letting me stay there. A very bad place to stay!

I LOVED this hotel. It was tiny and old with SO much character. Our room overlooked China Town at Grant Ave. If you're looking for a reasonably priced place with lots of character and amazingly friendly staff, this is the place for you!

The room was better than i expected, i expected some old and shabby building but instead everything was clean and tidy. Yes the elevator is a bit scary but we had fun riding in it :P It can be quite noisy but you can't beat that location. The hotel is literally right next to the Chinatown gate, there are so many things around you in walking distance!! you can go to the squares, and the mall (Westfield Mall is just down the street), and the biggest movie theater, and even the museums...you can walk everywhere from that spot. The older man at the reception can be a bit rude, but basically it's just that he doesn't speak english that well i guess...and well i tried talking to him with (my broken) Mandarin instantly he became so much friendlier.

great location, right next to famous china town entrance and blocks (about 4) away from north beach/nob hill area. the rooms were very clean, the employees were very nice and easy going. our room was located on the 5th floor and we had a beautiful view over the downtown. san francisco being as expensive as it is i was surprised. definitely stay there again next time.

Pros Excelent Customer Service. People are very nice. Excellent location. Cons The room was really small. It was dirty. Television Set was not working and safety box key was broken, therefore no safety box in the room. For the rest the hotel is OK for the price they charge. They can change the bed sheets every now and then and make the bed correctly. Too much noise.

This is my sixth time in San Francisco, and first in Astoria. I can say that thinking about cost/benefit relationship, I did not find a better place to stay. I agree that the building is old, and it is not the most beautiful hotel to stay, but if you are looking for a well located hotel wiht a reasonable place, and friendly staff, this is the right place! I definitely will stay at Astoria next time again!

Very disapointed. Front desk staff don't speak english enough to help out. Can't help with places to go or how to get there. The rooms are dirtier than staying at a youth hostel. Found filthy undergarments in our room. Dirty surroundings. Hard to get to. No communication skills with sales department and front desk. Trashy. Don't bother booking for this hotel!! No air in the rooms!! only a window that dosn't work and very very very noisy outside!

This was our first trip to San Francisco. The room lacked a homey feel to it- may better decorations would help. No remote control in room for tv. Also, the elevator is scary when it stops at each floor. However, for a simple need of a place to stay this hotel was fine.
