The hotel is located right next to the entrance to China Town. On the other side it neighbors the prestigious German Goethe Institute. My stay was quite pleasant. The room was clean, but could use some renovating. But then again the price was very good for the location. The hotel was quite busy and the vast majority of the guests seemed to be Chinese. Breakfast was included in the price. It's no-frills, but good enough to get full. They had a buffet with bagels, toast, bagged pastry, orange juice, coffee, tea, and a variety of spreads for the bread. I would go there again if I was alone, but if I was with a girl or family I would probably go somewhere nicer, unless I really didn't want to spend any more money.

The Hotel was not so clean, there were a lot of hair in the bathroom before we used it. The room did not have a good smell. But the position is very very good, because it's in China Town and all the most interesting parts of the city are very close. The price is very low for this area.

It was ok for three Nights but so damn far away from beeing worth the price. The furniture was used and old an partly demaged and disgusting. The Lady at the front desk was unfriendly and couldnt give any advices for the City. She only referred to the displayed City Maps....in the whole: Never ever again for that price.

Staff was rather careless and always busy with ipads, computers and the like to pay further attention to guests and their requests. Room was clean, but too small. Not an air-condiotioner or fan in the room. Poor breakfast in a small kitchen. The positive aspect: location. Superb!

The original twin room that were allotted to us was horrible. There was a urine smell and the set up made the room small. We complained and got a queen-bedded room instead and it was more spacious and better. But the furniture from this place is so run down, its from the sixties. Breakfast was good considering it is complimentary but the staff was not unfriendly but they are very crude. Overall, for the price its good value considering the location but if one can afford it, one would choose a better one.

Pd $90 for one night. Don't know prices in SF, but thought overpriced for what you got. Should have been $60. Continental breakfast, bagels, toast, boiled eggs, juice. Room clean. furniture very old and needing update. For a budget traveler this would work. But only for a budget traveler. Motel 6 quality, but clean. Lock on door handle (with key to open) and sliding chain, no bolt lock. When I asked was told they were all broken. Did not make me feel safe. put chairs in front of door, didn't sleep very sound.

You get what you pay for. Very much a clean but no-frills place. Clerks speak little English (or at least have very thick Chinese accents). Parking is not included, but discounted. Must go a block and a half away (up a very steep hill) to park. Hotel rooms and breakfast room remind me of a semi-private hostel. No wi-fi, and the street below is very very noisy. Elevator kind of rickety. Still, I've stayed in worse places, and for those on a budget, it's not bad. Just know what to expect.

Hotel staff was super friendly and helpful. Location is right at Chinatown, blocks from Union Square and walking distance to the Wharf and Ferry Terminal Building. Price was great! But, you get what you pay for. Hotel is older, walls and carpets are stained. Furniture is very outdated. But, thats all superficial stuff, overall stay was great. We even took our infant who did wonderfully. The staff, even accommodated our stay and changed our room to ensure we were on the non-street side (though our window was facing a brick building).

Phenomenal value!! Think of this place as a very basic hotel or a very nice hostel...small, clean, functional private rooms with private baths. I think the place is best for single travellers, but a couple who can get along in a tight space should be ok. The hotel has a large lounge area with wifi, shared kitchen space, basic (ok, borderline pathetic) continental breakfast. Just don't expect much in the way of amenities, and you'll be fine. I didn't care, though...I just want a clean, quiet, safe place to sleep..I didn't come to SF to lounge around in my room all day. I like that it's an old building that still has windows that can open. There's some street noise (I was on the 7th floor), but the guests were generally quiet and considerate. Mattress quite firm--more than I'd prefer, but I can sleep anywhere. Staff: Front desk is usually friendly/helpful. Cleaning staff was not good at acknowledging the "do not disturb" sign, though I suppose that's what the door chain is for. In the end, you can't beat the location. In SF, it's easy to get into VERY bad neighborhoods VERY quickly. Looking online, some of the places that are even more expensive than Hotel Astoria are in pretty sketchy areas. This hotel, however, is in a GREAT area right next to the Chinatown gate and all the ritzy touristy shopping around Market St. I stayed here for a convention (Moscone Convention Center is a pleasant 10 minute walk); my colleagues all spent as much $ per night at their hotels as it cost me for the whole week. Bonuses: Golden Gate Bakery is a few blocks up Grant, between Pacific and Jackson; they have awesome dan ta (Chinese egg custard tarts)--a derivative of the Portugese pastel de Belem--and other yummy Chinese desserts. If you're adventurous, the Tenderloin is a somewhat sketchy neighborhood nearby that has awesome food. Bottom line: insanely good deal. Highly recommended if you are not high maintenance or looking for any luxury.

Probably one of the cheapest hotels you'll find in SF. I booked the Queen room /w Shower inside. At the end of the day, I was only looking for a place for me to sleep, I didn't need the bells and whistles. The area was great, it was located next to Chinatown. I noticed some comments said it was a bad area, but in general it's not. Downtown as most other US cities do get a bit sketchy but nothing out of the normal. There was also some upscale hotels a block away so the area overall is not bad. If I went back to SF, I'd go back here again. It was kind of loud at night, but as being downtown, this was expected. There's free WiFi on the second floor.

The room was small and dirty. The mattress and pillows were stiff and gave me back and neck aches. I don't think the shower has ever been cleaned. No complimentary tea or coffee. We found long, black strands of hair sticking out of the towels hanging on the shower door. The location was convenient. The room was quiet. The parking cost us $45 for the weekend....they didn't mention that part in the description and we didn't necessary budget for it. They also add tax after you check in which increases your initial total. For the price we payed, plus what we payed for parking, we probably could have found something much nicer and more comfortable. We won't be staying here again.

Excellent value for money. Room and facilities perfectly adequate, clean and comfortable, staff sufficiently helpful and friendly. Surroundings safe and clean. Within walking distance (even with luggage) to central hubs (e.g. Powell MUNI, Union Square) and attractions. (Elevator a bit shaky, and license has expired, but not hazardous). Don't expect a full English breakfast, but the "continental" breakfast is up to standard. If you are on a budget, I would recommend the Astoria without hesitation, and would definitely stay there again. Very convenient for Chinatown, and laundromat, shopping, food, cablecars... all close by. Within easy walking distance of conference venues, if you want to save on overpriced accommodation for conferences.

Pictures say more than words but in this case they tell the wrong things. We booked because of the really nice pictures but at the end it has been less nice BUT overall it was really OK. What I want to say is that you should not expect to much from some good made pictures! It is a Chinese managed hotel (at the entry of Chinatown that shpuld not be a surprise ;) ). So I felt like being in Beijing again ;). For me it was OK but as I said the pictures promised more than we get at the end. Continental breakfast were not what we expected (and the breakfast room is very small --> If you get there at the "wrong" time you have to stand). Would I go again? For a good price "Yes". The location is OK. 5-10 Minutes to Cable car station and 0,25 Minute to Chinatown. The rental car station (Al... and Nat...) is only ~15 Minutes away what also was one reason to book.

This is the first time that we stayed in the Hotel Astoria. We stayed in a double room with en-suite. When we arrived the man at reception arranged everything for us and went the extra mile to let us know what trams/buses to get on. He also made the suggestion not to go down to the Civic Centre after 7pm because of a high crime/homeless rate around there - something we were glad to find out! The hotel is what we expected - and very pleasant for the price. Breakfast costs $4 but we chose to eat out in the mornings. As you may have read previously the hotel is very close to China town and literally 5 minutes walk from the main shopping streets which is fantastic but the rooms can be slightly noisy. I only mean the occasional horn from a passing cab. The San Fransisco drivers are very impatient!! The room was clean when we arrived and cleaned/made up daily or as needed and we really felt this place is value for money!

Hotel Astoria is right next door to Chinatown, literally, just walk out the front door and turn the corner. Excellent location! Seems like some rooms could be noisy but ours was not. I think the Astoria is probably a very good value for San Francisco, we paid $70 per night total, so you can't expect it to be the St. Francis (ah, the St. Franicis!) but for the money it seemed reasonable. Again, great location, reasonably friendly and competent desk personnel. However, the room is very small, like an inexpensive European hotel, the bed was worn out, major sagging that gave my wife a back ache, and the room had a faint unpleasant odor. I'm 50 but don't mind staying in budget accommodations, preferring to spend my budget on food & entertainment. I probably would not stay there again but you get what you pay for. If this is all you can afford, it's not awful, as some reviewers have suggested. I have also stayed at the Grant Plaza, which is inside Chinatown. The rates are similar to the Astoria but I liked it much better. However, I recall that the rooms on the top floor (7th?) of Grant Plaza were much better than those in the rest of the hotel. But this was 15 years ago, it could have changed significantly since then although it still looks the same.

I have done a lot of traveling, and I am not picky, but I would not stay here again. The hotel rooms were very noisy. There wasn't a clock in the room. I asked for a clock and was told the hotel didn't offer this ammenity. We were only given one key to the room and when I asked for another one, I was told that there were no extra keys. The continental breakfast was a joke. When I tried to take a muffin and a cup of coffee to my room, the "attendant" stood in front of the door and blocked my way because of a "no food in rooms" policy. The staff at the front desk was extremely rude, in fact they acted like they were doing me a favor by letting me stay there. A very bad place to stay!

They can change the bed sheets every now and then and make the bed correctly. Too much noise.

Old rooms, the smell at first was not good, but it was clean and OK if you only use it to spend the nights

This is my sixth time in San Francisco, and first in Astoria. I can say that thinking about cost/benefit relationship, I did not find a better place to stay. I agree that the building is old, and it is not the most beautiful hotel to stay, but if you are looking for a well located hotel wiht a reasonable place, and friendly staff, this is the right place! I definitely will stay at Astoria next time again!

Very disapointed. Front desk staff don't speak english enough to help out. Can't help with places to go or how to get there. The rooms are dirtier than staying at a youth hostel. Found filthy undergarments in our room. Dirty surroundings. Hard to get to. No communication skills with sales department and front desk. Trashy. Don't bother booking for this hotel!! No air in the rooms!! only a window that dosn't work and very very very noisy outside!

I was afraid of an elevator. I think that the geographical convenience is good here.

The Hotel had less frills than most, but it was clean, offered breakfast, close to parking, and close to Chinatown, Union Square, and public transportation.

This was our first trip to San Francisco. The room lacked a homey feel to it- may better decorations would help. No remote control in room for tv. Also, the elevator is scary when it stops at each floor. However, for a simple need of a place to stay this hotel was fine.
